I thought Modern Warfare 2 was an immense disappointment. It was a massive stepdown from Call of Duty 4. What I thought when I played it was, 'Jesus guys, what have you been doing? You've not ramped anything up. The story is worse and the game doesn't really hang together, it's just a bunch of mission levels.'
It made no sense. It was totally implausible. It doesn't resolve. Basically, all the things that bad storytelling does. I just think they were way too impressed with themselves and that's always a danger. It's just unfortunate.
Conversely, with Uncharted 2, those guys went back and look at the first game. Everything that didn't work very well, they fixed or ramped up or did something with.
They really took it to a new place and you can honestly say to people if you played the first game, the second one is the same but better. Modern Warfare 2 is the same but... way worse. And it cost more money. |

If by "writing" you mean "spearheading the movement to misappropriate salient iconography for cheap thrills and a Gears-of-War-2 level of idiotic marketing" |

How did you feel about Call of Duty 4?
If this sounds like shrug's question, I'm just mainly curious as to what your impression is of most mediums being obsessed with apocalyptic and terrorist/revolutionary iconography as of late.
I was not aware the teaser aired in Times Square, mind you. I can see how that would be troublesome. Was there any fallout to it?
I'm not entirely certain what point you're trying to make about Morgan, though.
shrug, read Black Man. _________________

Honestly, if this line of observation and commentary interests you, that's a further reason to dip into the Halo games. _________________

The Iliad had a plot just as hackneyed as Halo's. |

Take it up with Obama, it's not my problem.
You should still read it, either way.
It kicks off with a manhunt in the middle of Jesusland, which is essentially a slum. _________________

It's likely just bad-mouthing to promote Crysis 2 anyway.
I mean, Combat Evolved's plot was straight-forward military sci-fi fluff, and did the job well at that, but even the biggest fans recognise that the sequels are pretty much torrents of bullshit.
But hey, playing Halo for story is like playing Megaman for character development.
P.S. It's kind of funny though that he brings up his problems with archetypes because his Takeshi Kovacs character basically becomes an even more bastardly Indiana Jones crossed with Master Chief as his novels progress. _________________

Oh, it's certainly a well marketed franchise, and it's definitely telling that ODST went for its own interpretation of ARG memetics.
I'd be curious to know if they have anything planned along those lines for Reach. Even Halo 3's terminals were welcome. _________________

On the subject of the XCOM news, Something Awful actually drops the patented sarcasm and has an earnest critique.
| Dennis Farrell wrote: |
The franchise's main appeals were its multi-layered and relatively complex strategy, the ability to personalize your squads to feel an actual connection to them and piece together your own story entirely through the things that happened when you pitted your wits against the computer, and the constant reminder that you were working against the clock with failure a very real possibility.
It would be great to be wrong about this, but it's not likely that any of the above qualities will be at the forefront of a story-based first person shooter that lists the Xbox 360 as its primary platform. A "strategic core" is mentioned, but way more emphasis is placed on the shooting and story. Let's hope that's just PR attempting to emphasize the bits that they think will sell more copies. |
| Dennis Farrell wrote: |
| It's been a long time since a game like the original X-COM has come around. Why not make an update - not just more of the same but an evolution of the concept that stays true to the original's spirit, something that will do what Civilization IV did for its series? I can only imagine that the reluctance to do so is based on the (in my opinion, bogus) belief that there aren't enough modern gamers capable of understanding or enjoying a complex strategy game to justify the cost. |

In the end, it depends on how it's implemented, but they're doing away with specifically one of the signature restrictions of the title. _________________
