huh, I'd never heard of Tozai Games before. I just assumed Irem was handling all their current stuff internally.
Do you happen to know what the relationship between From Software and Irem is? I assumed Spelunker dude being in the game was a case of "hey we love your stuff can we borrow him", but I really have no clue. Maybe Sony set it up? |

In a revelation that, to some, is on the order of realizing there is (or isn't) a god, it turns out that all the dungeons in The Legend of Zelda were part of the same enormous map. This seems to have some sort of transcendental importance that I can't quite put my finger on.

Some of Nintendo's older games were really efficient works of programming art. Link's Awakening's underworld (that is, everything not on the overworld) works in a very similar way. |

That I don't know (and if you find out please share). But I can say that, unlike wikipedia's claim to the contrary, Spelunker HD (released for PSN in Japan already and coming soon to North America) seems to have been actually handled by Tozai. You can see it right on the title screen. I don't really have details on this though, I'm just going on that and a tweet from their company twitter. |

this is kind of similar to (but much cooler than) something i heard ages ago, that in early fps games, like doom, all the floors on each stage were actually on one "floor", and the stair actually just moved you to a different part of the map.
it would be great if all the zelda dungeons were in their corresponding places on the overworld map, so you could create a cool layered map thing. _________________

hey, if anyone sees extensive scans or transcriptions of the latest Nintendo Power (December 2009), I'd love to see the review of Fighting Fantasy: Warlock of Firetop Mountain. 4.0 for a first person DS RPG makes me curious, especially since I've been waiting for a good portable Western-style RPG since..
...well, basically since forever. |

have you played dungeon explorer, dais? it reminds me of the dreamcast record of loddoss war game, in that it was made in japan, but it looks and feels like a western game. _________________

Just in case you don't have it, Team Fortress 2 is $2.49 on steam until 2pm pacific. Euro kids get the same deal in their slightly superior currency of choice.
Basically you should own this game, and if you know someone that likes multiplayer shooters and doesn't have it, you should probably just gift it to them now. |

Irem would never, ever have put in those horribly tacky menus and that "arcade" screen mode where the game shrinks to a tiny thumbnail and wobbles constantly. |

Holy Umbrella Dondera! Man, I played through that game....geez, it must have been four, five years ago at this point. The game is kind of unbalanced in terms of actual quality, some of the levels are pretty fun and some are just boring. Some keen music, though, and I'm glad we'll finally be able to appreciate the non-slapstick humor.
oh yeah, it's totally one of those platformers where you switch between multiple characters with a press of a button but the abilities each one has are so vastly disparate that it's a pain when you have to switch to some of them. |

So. Irem seems to realise that there still are enough people around that want to buy an "R-TYPE" game ... is this a good or a bad thing? I don't know ... will wait and see whether TACTICS2 makes it over here. Thanks for the heads up though! _________________

Insomniac says that focus testing has proven to them that people want better graphics instead of better frame rate, and that better graphics correlate to higher review scores and more sales (but framerate doesn't affect those things). Therefore, they plan to prioritize graphics over framerate and the newest Ratchet and Clank game is likely their last 60fps game. http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3176713
That's.... disappointing. |

I think Atlus said they'll at least give it a PSN release, sans the Bitter Chocolate. |

It's pretty similar to why Bungie doesn't run Halo at 60fps. So, it's not necessarily a bad thing. |

well, you can't see framerate in a screenshot. you don't need focus testing to figure that one out.
i seem to be a lot more tolerant of low framerate than most people, the only time it ever bothers me in the slightest is in racing games. so you know what, i either welcome this or don't care. 30fps is fine for the kind of games that insomniac makes. |

Good man. My friend implored me to play with the Oblivion Lost mod with difficulty on Hell, and it was pretty awesome. Actually, I've never played vanilla Stalker. That 2009 Complete Mod collection looks mighty tempting, though...
Also look for and install Float32. It's supposed to give you a significant performance boost. Again, I've never played without it so I don't know how much it changes. _________________

Oh, you're right. I got it confused with the fact that it runs at sub-HD (600p).
So they actually did the opposite of what Insomniac is talking about. :( |

As is consistent with most of my PC game experience, the game is basically unplayable right now. It runs at a decent frame rate, but the input lag is like 2 seconds when coming form a mouse or the keyboard.
The demo of Torchlight I tried earlier ran surprisingly well!
I might try that Float32 thing, but at this point I don't really care. I play games for entertainment. I fuck with config files and debug shit all day, so when I play games I just want them to work.

Did you get the Mod package? I've only played the game with that, so I don't know how the regular game fares, but the only problem I've encountered is when moving across long distances I'll sometimes get a super brief frame-rate hiccup. And I figure this has more to do with my laptop not being all that great than anything about the game itself.
(P.S. So far this game is fucking sweet. It's everything I liked about Fallout 3 only better.) |
