oh yeah, some cel-shading is done with an edge detection shader too, my bad. i should probably shut up because i barely know what i'm talking about.
been pondering exactly how the cel shading in that ps3 misato katsuragi news reader was done, because it's the slickest i've seen yet - the outlines are always in exactly the right place and at the right widths, perfectly AAed, and it's not really a cel-shading thing per se but i appreciate that her mouth moves instantaneously. i'd like to see game cel-shading on this level of accuracy where all the animation was done like that instead of automatically interpolated (though i guess it would still end up looking artificial when the camera moved.)

That looks great

if they were going to have the mouth emulate the jerkiness of the hand animation, though, they should have pulled down the frame rate to get the rest of the animation to match(!) _________________

While we're about ex-Square guys sticking to old recipes, there's a new Xeno-something coming from Monolith.
Well, we know what this one looks like actually, it's the game formerly known as Monado, shown at last E3. |
I left it playing in the background and once it picks up that music track is rather nice! sounds almost like it fits in somewhere with the emotional qualities of Mitsuda's work on the original. really doubt I am looking forward to another xenowhatever though. _________________

A Gargantuan M60!
A Slashing Golf Club!
And Introducing The Fallen Survivor!
Meet 3 Left 4 Dead 1 Survivors!
New Game Modes!
Was that a typo? Game Modes? Didn't we mean Game MODE? Did we mean to include that "S"?!?!?
YES WE DID! |
Not exactly sure what some of those things mean, but I am pretty excited about new game modes. _________________

whoa, I totally forgot about this game. How long has it been since the first screen was released? Feels like at least a couple of years.
I kind of like the aesthetic, makes it feel like a Dreamcast game. _________________

You know, I can't actually think of a Nintendo game that I'm technically looking forward to more than this one. But uh, that spectrum is a pretty limited one. _________________

I agree, on both counts. I think they have what it takes reinfuse the kinetic joy and the pulp-space opera missing from every Star Fox in the last decade.
However I also believe the most likely scenario is Nintendo will either continue to sit on the series or farm it out to someone else so it can continue to be treated as an afterthought :( _________________

The Passing (L4D2 DLC) was just released on Steam. Like five minutes ago.
Also, I dunno if it's been said here, but Steam's new UI graduates from beta and goes live on Monday. |
hopefully it's not the glitchy piece of crap I experienced when trying the beta last month! mostly talking about the in-game UI overlay frequently becoming unreadable.
also I hope some of you guys are around tonight for the DLC. _________________

I met someone who used to do testing for Activision who painted a pretty interesting picture of the behind the scenes stuff. According to him when IW delivered the builds of Modern Warfare for QA they were almost spotless as far bugs and glitches went, which he claimed was actually to the dismay of the Activision QA dept.
Meanwhile, Treyarch (using the same engine) had hosts of issues with World at War. I asked him why the fuck you couldn't save your progress in the CO-OP campaign (one of the most boneheaded omissions I've seen in any recent title I can think of) and he said it was causing "too many issues" and had to be cut so the game could ship!
take all that as you will, this guy smokes electronic cigarettes. _________________

All remaining GameWorks go squish. :(
We haven't had a Sega arcade here in Albuquerque for over 10 years, but when there WAS one I used to go for their $20 all-you-can-play nights.
On the upside, if you're near a GameWorks, maybe you can pick up some arcade machines for cheap! |
Too bad the majority of the GW arcade machines (at least in my tri-state area) actually fell apart at least 4 years ago. I'm not even sure how the one near where I grew up even still has it's doors open, considering all that was left last time I was there was Police Trainer and Harley Davidson LA Riders (complete set with broken CRT).
It was once a glorious candyland :( _________________
