They don't. The review is saying how they can't see why you'd want to play this for 100 hours.

They didn't play more than 8 hours because a game should not take that long to become compelling.

Some people have the patience to put up with "bad" content in a game if they have reason to believe there will be "good" content later. In a situation where a substantial amount of people disagree with you about how unbearable the "bad" content, it's bullshit to refuse to play through a significantly large portion of the game and then go on to make hyperbolic statements about how terrible your fraction of a playthrough was.

If the "good" content is buried that far into a game, they need to edit their game more! Take out all the crap!

Or they should stop making games altogether.

Here's the thing: if a reviewer has spent over 8 hours on a game and abhors it, I think he's perfectly justified in stopping and saying the amount I played, the first 8 hours, sucks. There may be something redeeming later on, but I don't care. The kind of masochists who would endure the shit up front to get to some elusive good part to justify their wasted time wouldn't listen to such a review anyway.

As long as the reviewer had a disclaimer on how much time he/she put into the game, and said "this part of the game sucks, and here is why" (which is what Dracko's review is), I am okay with that.

DAIS has a point in that if you are a reviewer of videogames, getting paid money to review them, and getting review copies for free, you ought to play them to completion whether you liked the first eight hours or not. Ebert doesn't get to walk out of movies he hates.

In any other situation, of course, quitting such a game is absolutely fine, even the best course of action. As long as you say when you quit, and why, when you write about it.

Should a reviewer have to play through every single difficulty mode, unlock every gameplay style (see Castlevania: Circle of the Moon), play - and master - every single character in a fighting game, and so on and so on - before being "qualified" to pass a review because THEN, and only THEN, does the reviewer grasp the game as a whole?

Is this a reasonable expectation when developers put in arbitary things to create "replay value"? Or when developers pad out games into 100 hours?

It's absurd to expect a reviewer to have to put in over 40 hours before his opinions on a game is qualified. Movie reviewers may have to sit through an entire movie, but that's, what, a maximum of 4 hours wasted? You can't translate that straight into reviewing games - especially games that have a length of upwards over 50 hours.

Look, I agree that game reviewers should play through a good amount of the game - we all know that IGN probably didn't get past the very first level of some games, like Godhand - but to have to play through a game that thoroughly? Surely you don't believe that?

Things I saw in that Lord Arcana trailer:

damage appearing as numbers, qtes, actual transitions from the game world to "battle screens / arenas"

Christ, it's like they decided to take out everything subtle and clever about Monster Hunter and shoehorned their usual bullshit. What's the fucking point?
