Toups, about frontpage comments. It would be worthy to make it obvious to posters they are posting on a frontpage discussion, for example via a color-coded scheme. ( blinking red background? ;) )

As for .. Hell, I'm not going to talk about the actual topic. Just, I understood the IC guidelines as trying to set a goal of a certain quality level for contributions/discussions. Enriching discussions rather than contests between arbitrary tastes.

I absolutely agree.

Also maybe sped-up Jpop in the background?

Maybe if you actually banned the trolls/people who regularly engage in personal attacks, the general vibe of things would be more positive.

But that can be a very, very messy grey area.

ajutla, I always get pissed when Booji insults my mom's cooking, because she used to feed him all the time.

No it isn't!

TWO OUTCOMES:
Person A: "Opinion."
Person B: "Personal attack."
Admin: "Do that again and I'll ban you for a week."
Person B: "OK, sorry."
Admin warns Person B, he understands that he stepped over the line, and chills out.

Person A: "Opinion."
Person B: "Personal attack."
Admin: "Do that again and I'll ban you for a week."
Person B: "BHLDSFHADSFKLAFHFAG"
Admin bans Person B, no one has to put up with him for a while, and maybe Person B learns to act like an adult.

I really don't know of any successful forums that have a total hands-off approach to moderation. You can't expect people to be civil because you say so. You could get into issues of tone, of course, and that's something you'd have to deal with on a case-by-case basis.

(Note: I'm not trying to be offensive to/call for a banning of anyone in particular when I say any of this.)

That was what I thought at first, either that or maybe his mom had some kind of tragic disease, but after the incident I thoroughly questioned all of the guy's friends that I knew and his mom is apparently just your basic mom.

I am pretty much universally against any flavor of banning or moderation except for when I'm for it.

Where I come from, if one of my friends is constantly insulting and obnoxious, we stop hanging out with that person. Since no one has come up with a mute or block or blacklist function for internet forums, I'll make do with a mod.

Since now, I guess?

And how is anyone here qualified to say what "we" care about? That wasn't even the issue, in the first place.

Before registering, I've been lurking for at least a year. I'm quite new to posting here. Can I share my two cents on this place's atmosphere?

I feel it's unfriendly in general. Since I signed up, I haven't read that many threads where a good discussion was going on. Apart from the unfriendly atmosphere, there are a lot of one-liners and one-word posts that are either in-jokes or a waste of space. :(

Then we get some excuse about "But hey, this IS the Internet!". Does it matter? Even though it's the Internet and you're pretty much anonymous save for a nickname, it's no excuse to not behave yourself.

SelectButton is certainly not friendly! But that's what makes it compelling. We/they tear each other's throats out over the dumbest shit -- imagine a room of very angry old coots with cigars and pipes roaring at each other. But when we/they get around to actually discussing a video-game, it's all barely restrained civility.

I love it here.

Yeah, definitely, a lot of people here can be extremely pretentious (heck, i am about certain things but definitely not GAMES)

I like bad games, guys. I can't perfect credit Ikaruga. I enjoy all manners and methods of Splinter Cells. I like Burnout Revenge!
I play very non-IC games, sometimes..

I missed the whole drama with Pikachu over at the other forums, but if everyone just relaxed and realized nothing we discuss is all that important, then this place might be a bit more friendly. I don't know if I count as an 'old school' member, but I remember when Toups first joined the forums..

talk about a trial by fire.. I wish everyone who was mean to him back then would thank him for these forums he's put up now.

BenoitRen has a point though. The general atmosphere of this place isn't very friendly to outsiders. This is probably because most of us posting here have been doing so for some time now and are used to everyone else's mannerisms and aware of their opinions and personalities. Things don't seem as hostile to us because we're used to being around in this type of environment.

However, I do have to say that since the IC meltdown things have tended to be a lot more civil in general, now that everyone's aware of just how bad they were seemingly acting before. Trying to keep tone in mind when talking about things over the internet is a bit of a needless hassle, but I don't think it's asking too much for people to not call each other fuckfaces and insult their mothers.

Yeah, that's more or less how I feel. I don't mind the raging debates -- in fact, I like them a lot! When an argument gets heated it's pretty fucking awesome. But there's still a line there that we need to remember not to cross.

The only thing I really don't like about this place is when the "lol, internet" thing gets a little out of hand and it becomes unacceptable to do anything except yell at someone and then back out of it because it is lol internets. There's enough of that on WOW for me, thank you.

I don't think anyone at Select Button is in any sort of position to mock someone's taste in games. (Even if the game DOES have more in common with a casino than a fantasy epic.)
