Seriously, people, what is with all this clinging to mediocrity? Castlevania, Sonic the Hedgehog, Nine Inch Nails... This shit is so un-SB. Or maybe I'm all wrong about SB, and it's just me. I mean, you sound like a bunch of gamers.
lol |
To anyone who feels this way about SB: fuck off.
As far as I am concerned this place has never been defined by what your taste in games is. In fact, I never cease to be surprised by how diverse people's tastes are here when you actually find out the sort of games that average but less vocal posters enjoy.
These forums are not a place for us to jack each other off about how awesome our taste in games is. Neither this website nor the IC forums before it are about self-proclaimed superiority over the rest of the gaming masses. That attitude is not welcome here.
Now, this is not to say that we are not elitists; this is not to say that we don't have higher standards for games than most other people; this is not to say that we don't (for the most part) commonly enjoy certain games over others. We are, and we do. It's simply to say that these aren't reasons to become so close-minded as to dismiss anyone with an opinion that varies from yours, all based on some self-ordained understanding of what's good and what isn't.
I'm starting to see this attitude creep up lately so I thought I'd throw in my two cents. _________________

but seriously, I agree with Toups. don't go into threads telling everyone they have shitty taste games/music/scarves/hentai if your not going to explain yourself, because that shit is really annoying.
also I don't mean to get the ball rolling on some kind of gang up on antitype thread. you can express your opinion without raging against some imaginary unified selectbutton hivemind. _________________

May I suggest: temp-ban for anyone who complains about a "hivemind"? Almost seriously!
Actually-seriously, that's one of the major things that bothered me about the IC forums in the final year or so. It seemed impossible to start a conversation without someone leaping in to disparage it as a typical example of such-and-such around there. Result: thread becomes derailed; everyone gets pissed off for different reasons.
And the thing is, this kind of attitude spreads like a cancer. |

I do remember shades of this since I began posting 'round IC. I never did get into Castlevania, MGS, or KoF, but nobody ever gave me grief for that at any point in any forum iteration.
On that note: Having too much zeal against something is as bad as having too much zeal for something. Igarashi I guess the Kojima question is, Falcoon can we weigh in fairness our own actions for something when others bring to light their opinions against it?
It would seem that some of us have grown accustomed to downplaying or tuning out some of the more aggressive defenders of their likes. Not everyone has. Who's at fault for that?
Ah well. Business as usual. _________________

Yeah, i'm kinda with you on that, joe. I definitely have music I like, but for some reason I can listen to a lot of things at least once and find something to ummm, not sure respect is the right word, but you get my meaning.
And yeah, coming into a board and talking about the hive mind is kinda like asking everyone to question why you are there in the first place. |

So, who's going to be the first to liken this thread to the birth of the hivemind?
As for my actual contribution to the thread, I'd just like to say that I'm against banning or temp-banning for this kind of behavior. It just doesn't feel like justified censorship. This place isn't protected by the first amendment, but I'd still like to think that it's a place that allows dissenting opinions, even if those opinions have to do with the homogeny of forum opinion. _________________ I can no longer shop happily. |

yeah, this thread didn't exist to call out the poster in question (which is why I didn't use his name). I'm just tired of seeing those sorts of comments pop up, and they make the whole board look bad, regardless of whether or not they are jokes. I'm particularly upset about them appearing in frontpage threads, since, you know, those are what people from "the outside" are more likely to read.
people are generally on very good behavior in those threads, too, but for future reference, let's keep the following in mind when posting in force feedback:
-no joke posts, especially of the inside joke variety
-nothing that even resembles trolling. it's okay to disagree, but only do so in a way that contributes positively to the thread.
I will remove any posts which fit into the above categories.
also I hated portrait of ruin but there are "mediocre" game which I "cling to" so I guess I should stop posting here because that's so "un-SB", right? _________________

Hey, aren't you the guy who got temp-banned for being obnoxious? In exactly the manner discussed in this thread? |
1) if we're thinking of the same situation, then no, he is not
2) in my opinion, the situation that I'm fairly sure you are referring to was really rather unfair and unjustified and had more to do with the general frustration of mods with the board situation at the time (which is entirely understandable).
3)I'm actually complaining about the hive-mind here, sort of! Not so much that it exists (it doesn't!) but that there seems to be this attitude that it should. to my mind people who complain about the "hive-mind" are actually rather justified because this place has that appearance so often!
4)either way, I agree with predator goose that having dissenting opinions is a good thing and is what keeps this place worth browsing! if every thread was just a discussion of how awesome SotC was and how 99% of all other games just don't live up to the potential of the medium, I'd probably just delete this entire fucking website. we need people arguing and exploring each other's viewpoints. this is how new ideas get formed! this is where inspiration often comes from! the problem here is that we sometimes get so stuck up in our idea of what's "right" about videogames that we just outright dismiss people who disagree with it!
and I'm fucking tired of it!
5)conversely, though, the old "sb hivemind lol" argument is just as a bad of a conversational copout, for the very same reasons!
in conclusion, as I've been saying since the day I started this website, please be nice to each other! it's okay to disagree, it's okay for us to have esoteric taste, is okay for there to be a prevailing majority opinion -- just be nice! this is an old community! we have nothing to prove! there's no reason to get offensive or defensive! let's be gentlemen!!!! _________________

I think a more important form of elitism than smacking down people's basic tastes is a presumption that forumgoers or even the forum itself is "above" certain kinds of questions or discussions. This is the prevalent attitude that permits certain people to spam and even flame threads made with sincere intentions to discuss ideas that some obviously consider pretentious.
I mean, look, if I'm not going to be allowed to laugh at Ging for unabashedly adoring Castleroids, then I don't think it should be ok for winker to stalk me and mock my opinions. =(

I do agree about the idea that certain things "aren't worth" discussing -- I wasn't happy about what happened to the language thread, and in retrospect I should have done more to salvage it.
I mean -- I didn't like that thread, but I just wasn't planning on posting in it! I'd recommend the same course of action for people who feel the same way!
Anyway I'm not putting an absolute moratorium on making fun of people about things -- just know who's toes your stepping on, and be aware of how you come off. the original post I quoted at the start of this thread may have been a joke -- but that doesn't change the fact that it totally derailed and nearly ruined the thread. _________________

i'm a victim of a terrible crime
i demand retributive retroactive banning action
Seriously, things have been pretty good lately, I think. General forum behavior appears to be respectable, with most questionable humor appropriately kept to the axe. Most posts are serious and substantive. For my part, I've even posted a couple of slightly out-there threads that have gone well -- the "text during action" one, for instance, has received a surprising number of replies.
Except for the language thread you jerks. My heart is a broken cesspool of dying vigor.
and i like donnie darko. somewhat. fairly much, even. =(

A. antitype was joshing about. I like Sonic, I like NIN, I like the earlier Castlevania games, and I laughed.
B. Even if the perceived offense was somehow justified, dragging it from the axe over to here is petty and benefits no-one.
In curt, DRAMADRAMADRAMA
P.S. Donnie Darko is okay, but its importance is blown out of proportion. _________________

Have you guys ever had someone take serious offense at a your mom joke?
That happened to me once last summer; I was at a party and I was slightly drunk and some guy had pissed me off, so I was like
"Your mom."
I didn't even say "your mom something something." I just said "your mom." By itself. Just those two words. And this guy flipped the fuck out and is weird with me to this day.
Weird huh. |
