So, I had a short hollidays at my uncle's house, and my cousin has a PSP, that I recently erm, "liberated"? Yeah, let's say that. That obviously means it's getting much more usage than before. It had been on most of the last three days...

Until yesterday when the screen decided to go bonkers. It's some sort of weird scanline effect (or sometimes crosshatch, vertical - like TV interference?), that goes away if the PSP is twisted just in the right place. My bet would be the LCD ribbon breaking up or moved a fraction of a milimeter.

Now, the machine is still on warranty. I should downgrade the firmware just in case. Since I don't visit any other gaming sites, I have no idea if this is a common defect, or I can avoid the hassle, so I ask you, the kind users of this fine gaming forum, what the fuck is wrong with this PSP.

You're probably right. If you take it into a shop though one of their first solutions would be to try upgrading to the latest firmware. Unless it is ALWAYS like that until you twist it, in which case they would have to open it up. I would say downgrade to 1.5 and send it to them, but make sure to tell them you don't want a replacement because if they can't fix it, they would probably send you a refurb that might have new firmware on it.
