Stumbled across these while watching some Castlevania videos. These ones were my favorite.
The Ugly

As far as awful mods go...

Those 3D Castlevania videos are kind of amazing. They don't look like they'd be very much fun to play but it's crazy that someone went to the trouble to make them in the first place. _________________

Hes not autistic he has asperges if I remember rightly, hes written a book and its fucking mental its main character is called Knuckles and flies and he describes the colour of objects with hex codes and also writes battle scenes as if they have big floating stat windows like an rpg.
Thats his game, also check out his videos where he takes you on a tour of the highest mountains on level 1 of Bubsy 3D, he also has about 60 minutes of videos detailing how he updates his huge website manually by hand.
he also has tips on how to remove fat from pizzas and burger http://www.ulillillia.us/tipsntricks/fatremovaltrick.shtml _________________

That Quake 1 mod of course isn't that great by real standards, but I remember being impressed with the way Richter controlled.
That project got scrapped in favor of the slightly less unfinished Ascension of Virgil, which was a weird mix of Castlevania, a side scrolling brawler, and a tiny bit of Devil May Cry's combo based combat system. There's a Dreamcast version of it floating about.
The weirdest Quake mod game remake that never got finished is probably Vagrant Story Quake. _________________

I was thinking the same thing, actually. The amount of work that was required to make something like that is impressive, to say the least, but a spade is a spade.

Love in the first video how when the sun clears the horizon it MELTS MY EYEBALLS.
And in Sonata of BlooD those zombies seem to have the jidai-geki syndrome of not being able to kill one man despite outnumbering him by about fifty. _________________

| The first video looks kind of like Sonic X-Treme with the fish-eye. I love that literal attempt to move 2d games to 3d, it's too bad Super Paper Mario screwed it up. |

So are those games romhacks or programmed from scratch, showka?
I did play a couple of homebrew Mario games for the GBA though. They weren't THAT bad but the physics were ever so different from the originals and having recently played through SMB3 Advance, it just became unplayable for me. It's the little things I guess. (it also had the SMB3 Mario sprite while the rest of it was made with SMW graphics. why do so many prefer him over 16-bit Mario?)
I also remember playing a roguelike (let's leave the debate to the other thread) Mario game with randomly generated levels. What got me was a quickly it became dull though. Was sort of expecting it to last a while. _________________

What's that terrible, mostly unplayable rock climbing game called? The one where your mouse is mapped to your climbing pick, and you have to somehow muscle your way through the controls in order to get over obstacles? The only way to jump is to hit the ground hard enough that it propels your character upward? _________________

Oh right, fan games. I guess I thought we meant fans of the medium, or something...
Anyway, while I was failing to find Sexy Hiking I stumbled upon this:

I have no idea but it's creeping me out.

While searching for an old and terrible Zelda fan game I'm sure nobody but me has every played, I found this site, a collection of zelda fan games. Some of them look quite awful. Some of them look not so bad. Feel free to showcase the worst if anyone else has the time to dig through them. _________________

| So how about some good fangames? They definitely exist! Sure this stuff is sad, but I can't help but think about the effort put and what the author may have learned from it, since then. Unless they dripped their hobby altogether... |

But other than that I think most of the time the very state of mind behind making a fangame implies most of them want to make something derivative more than something good, and those who don't will become known enough to have their project deemed a threat and C&D'd. It works for doujin games because japanese companies are more lax with these matters. |

The first video in this thread is really neat. I bet if he had a good artist to work with he could make something really interesting.

From scratch, using the Allegro libraries. They're pretty old, too- I remember playing Castlevania Quest at full speed on an ancient Windows 95 machine.
I like fan games- to me, they're like ROM hacks but with more freedom.
I found this while looking for the second part of the Castlevania Quest video:

I totally changed the name of the topic to broaden the scope of what we can post in here, seeming as not all "fan-made" games are necessarily awful.
Touhou + Castlevania = Koumajo Scarlet Symphony/Touhouvania

thing about these castlevania-clones is, you know, the better programmed they are, the more you have to ask yourself why you're not just playing an actual castlevania game -- or, why didn't the game creators come up with a different, well-developed theme to fit over the similar/identical mechanics.
the super-powered-little-girls unyuu~ stuff is so awful |

| Well, there's the feeling of community, or on a basest level, the fact you're guaranteed a certain audience if you use a known theme. That oddly combined with what you said is why you see people refit Megaman or Castlevania into the Touhou mold, for example (which in japan is possibly the hugest amateur stuff-making community right now). Also some people are good at reproducing/undersanding/refining gameplay mechanics, or programming, or drawing, but not at creating a theme to bind it all, which is why they use an existing one. |
