Alright, self-imposed exile from the intertubes officially ends...Now.

So, all my clothes and such are packed, the DVDs and assorted videogames are either in storage at my parent's house at the other end of the state or in a box awaiting a FedEx destination. Affairs are in order, bills are paid off, and I've got about 3 hours left here. Once I'm done with this the computer goes into boxes as well.

And man, I'm nervous as fuck.

I'm generally not a very nervous dude, I acclimate fast and all that, but hell. I'm about as anxious now as I've ever been for something like this. First time living out of the state, moving into totally unfamiliar territory with not a lot of money or resources either, so I'm going to have to get on my feet fast. It's a hell of a head trip.

So I'm posting this from my old apartment, and the next time you guys see me (barring fiery plane death) I'll be posting from California.

Once I get situated I do plan on getting back into my usual posting habits and all that, though. Just wanted to get the remnants of my life here cleared up as best I could before jumping back in, and yeah. Zero hour is upon me.

Wish me luck! I'll update as the situation warrants.

God I hate flying.

let me extend my cali welcome to you as well.

the only reason I live here is because I can literally surf and snowboard on the same day but the people that populate this state might force me out soon. the people here suck donkey balls so keep an eye out for folks that are from out of state because despite as "cool" as the locals think they are the out of towners are actually cool.

and you gotta really watch your ass out here about following the rules. if you park, drink a beer or drive in the wrong place you will get a ticket.

its all about the $$ out here mang! but really, any big city is gonna be like that. oh yeah and get used to driving on freeways too.

Woo!

So I'm here and all is relatively well! Plane didn't explode (actually my smoothest flight yet), my new roommates are very friendly, the weather's nice, and, uh...Yeah! Now I just have to get situated.

UPDATE: My computer got here already. Holy shit. I mailed that thing ground about four hours before I got on the plane, and it arrived 2 days later. For about 60 lbs. worth of stuff, that's fucking quick.

You've got guts. I'm curious about how much buffer money you stored up first and how you arranged for a place with roommates to be waiting for you. Also how much time you have before bills and rent hit you. And what kind of job you manage to get quickly. I'm chicken shit about moving like you just did, though it may be partially due to my inability to save money. At all. Anyway, kudos on making it this far.

Your concerns were valid, tho. You should type up a bullet point list for wide distribution, especially on college campuses. Only instead of questions, you should write in a "this is what you need to stay the FUCK on top of!" format.

Hey DJ, it snowed today. Try to not forget the feeling.

Yah you hit the west coast during its one time rainy season so you won't miss that east coast weather too much. Anyway where did you move again, the bay area?

$1,000 on heading out in cash. I'm living with two friends who paid their rent through to the end of May a year in advance, so I'm living rent-free until then, which is enough time to land a decent job. The money I have now is basically only going to food, but barring other costs of living, that's more than enough.

Once we move out of here and into a larger place, I'll pay bills like a normal person.

All it all, I kinda just got lucky with the arrangement, so it was a "jump or don't" situation, and I jumped. I like it, though!

San Jose is pretty awesome! I like it here a lot. There are so many good places to get food and groceries, plus if I have to leave my job it should theoretically be easier for me to find a new one!

Okay, so this is a little weird. The past couple days I've been sleeping a lot. Like, a LOT a lot. 12-14 hours a day, which is almost double what I usually sleep.

Is this a normal side effect of changing timezones, or...?

I moved to LA a month ago, over which time I only got one job offer from a company 30 miles outside the city. Then yesterday and the day before I got 3 offers in a row. That month was frustrating but I'm glad I got a couple offers at the same time so I can have a choice.

It's a chilly year, too. A few years ago I remember OC having a 90 degree Christmas.

Climate change is fun! Things are becoming more extreeeeme.

In the last ten years or so I've pretty much become addicted to moving, to the point where if I spend more than three months in one place I start having to fight depression.

One thing you might notice, DJ, is that right after you move time seems to pass very slowly. This feeling goes away eventually (perhaps after 8 months to a year), but your first few weeks will probably seem like months.

New places, new sights, new people. You've got all this exciting new information coming in, all these new circumstances to deal with, new opportunities -- it's like you've discovered a brand-new world and been reborn!

Enjoy it while it lasts!

yeah, and we've just had three 60-degree-plus winter days here in tokyo.

like, i don't think it dropped below 10 degrees (celsius) once all winter.

fucking weird, man. it's like we're hijacking california's cable, over here.

not that i mind -- winter in tokyo is normally a god damned rainy nightmare.

Actually (and I'm serious) time's moved really goddamn fast out here. I'm at sort of a loss to explain it. It's just really intense to look over at the calendar and go "Oh Jesus, two weeks already?"

I'm kind of hoping it slows down once I start work. I already got hired, I'm just waiting for the start date, so I suppose speedy time is a good thing in this case.
