Lord help me I started Dungeon Fighter Online this evening... Until some maintenance thing happened.
I really hope new MMOs stop trying to copy that Woahblo bar. I mean, why do games need big red and blue globes with cubbyholes again? Fortunately you can hit tab and it's all gone sans a little healthbar with a little face frame up top. Much better.
But then it begs, for a brawler, why do attacks need wow-style cooldowns? I guess because specials don't cost health why is there mana oh god.
I like that I can map commands to a controller and most commands seem to have specific motions (I don't know how complex they get) to use. I wish I could have multiple keys to single commands so I'm not flipping between keys and controller as much but it's not that big of a deal.
I'd assume disregard the equipment/durability/inventory/encumbered shit as much as possible. Also turn off the music and playing some FM hasn't meshed too well. It's the aesthetic.
I guess it'd be better if it wasn't so busy trying to feel like wow in 2d sprites with Ragnarok music. Or Maple Story I guess, I haven't touched that. I wish I could turn off all the dumb damage numbers flying off everything. Perhaps there's a weird hidden Guilty Gear Isuka-like somewhere in there (as in the team pvp fights looked alright from videos.)
(I will say it was cute how it started out with a little webcomic thing. I guess normal people would rather a CG prerendered thing for no good reason. It's not amazing either, but I wish the story ended there but...guess not.) |
I liked my time with Dungeon Fighter Online. I had it on my laptop, and it wasn't fun playing it with a stick bigger than my machine. I might do it again now that I have a desktop, though. Or I might just wait till I make a media center PC...
Any SBers wanna DFO it up? _________________ interdimensional |

jRPG by that definition means, "what Japan favors." It's no better than wRPGs that are convoluted messes, though wRPGs are more interesting lately because they are less animu. That Persona 4 exists is a testament to the awesomeness of jRPG. Or FF12. I still don't understand how DQVIII fits in, though. Supposedly it's good while being super jRPG. I haven't played it. _________________ interdimensional |

I've been playing the Lego Universe beta. It's really fucking good. If you've ever liked Traveler's Tales Lego games then Netdevil's MMO is kind of the same thing but better.
Which is weird.

I know nothingxs played it in CB (you liked it, right?), but I was wondering if any of you kids were hip to the new hotness. As far as I've played it's like a combination of Phantasy Star and Monster Hunter with lots of speed and a hookshot that trips up bosses (or incapacitates their hands). |

| I started playing Vindictus today. It's surprisingly not horrible, though I'm not ready to say it's good yet. It's definitely more of an action game than most MMOs. I've only done the first few missions and they've been exceedingly easy, but I expect things will toughen up. If anyone wants a key I've got one extra. |
MOAI my characters' names are Fafnir and Delilah. You should add me!
The game gets harder by the 6th level or so? The challenges are also pretty hard depending on how leveled you are (I tried soloing mission 2 in under 5 minutes and lost with Fiona). I don't think the levels themselves get really hard, but you'll be rushing through them and get a little sloppy. I've encounted a midboss in a level who tore me up pretty good, too. I think that level has the Gnoll Chieftan as the boss, and he 3 hit KOed me. It felt a lot like Demon's Souls/Monster Hunter.
Edit: On the West server. Goons decided that. I dunno if I'm gonna stick around there, though, it looks like they're having problems...

AP is infinite. You have a skill that you get that will just give you AP as you play.
I like this game a fair bit better than DFO only because DFO's story was really weird. I like how this one is mission based and it's pretty clear what you need to do to get more stuff. Also, I feel like the controls suit the PC fairly well. It will definitely make me think again the next time I want to play Monster Hunter. _________________ interdimensional |

I was one of those kids converted to RR with R4. Then I went back and tried out RR2 and Rage Racer - both awesome games. I still like R4 the most, but Rage is up there.
... how do the newer ones fare?
I've heard a lot of things about the series that just turn me off... nitro boosts for drifting? Pfft. I kinda just want R4 HD and widescreen. 6 player splitscreen... mmm... that'd be pretty amazing... _________________ interdimensional |

Overriding my inclination to say something intensely dismissive here to ask you to extrapolate a bit, if you can. |
I'm not too far into this replay of the game, but a few times the game has impressed me with its ability to present content on the battlefield. My favorite one so far is when I was walking through the rebel's underground base and in the room where they keep the wing there are two guys talking about it. I sat there for what seemed like 5 minutes hearing them talk about the wing. There was an entire dialogue about battle plans and who was winning the war and what the wing meant and how they were going to fight it and it just kept going... and then he said, "oh ok, I gotta go." And then I was like, "oh yeah, I gotta play now."
But I didn't *have* to sit there. I did it only because the conversation was interesting. It was like when you're at a bar and you hear people talking about something cool and you just hang out. I could've just pew pewed them and moved on. In fact that's what I did the first time I played, so it's nice to see this kind of thing unfold.
That entire stage is awesome, really. I think the first time I played the game I shot all the wounded soldiers because I didn't want them to alert the non wounded ones to my presence. It was funny because I wouldn't have done it if they didn't have health bars. It was kind of sad. Probably something Infinity Ward should've thought about before making the airport scene. |

Unfortunately they don't think you're an ally until you get the Middle East costume near the end of the tunnel.
I just played a little bit more, and I think I'm really just impressed with the battlefield mechanic. Kojima's always tried to use MG as an anti-war game, but it was always pretty ironic. I mean, how do you claim war is bad with the ultimate warrior? I guess in MGS4 you don't really *do* anything. It's just scene after scene of people blowing the shit out of each other. It's like war porn. |

Has anyone played the PSN/XBLA Tomb Raider game? I'm 2 levels in, and it is pretty freaking awesome so far. It's like a 2player Zelda game w/o the overworld (boo) but big jungly dungeons. The co-op interactions between the two characters is really clever and fun. I dunno what it's like solo, though. _________________ interdimensional |

Yeah I thought it was going to be weird with the two players having different abilities, but it's actually really cool. I tried single player for a bit, and some of the beginning puzzles changed from 2p to 1p. Some were removed entirely, but that's a fair trade-off for different experiences. _________________ interdimensional |

The 2K games seriously know a lot more about game design than anyone wants to give them credit. I'd like to see the people who developed the 2K games make an action RPG. Also I'm pretty sure I'm buying 2k11 soon. _________________ interdimensional |

Completely defying logic and against all odds, I loaded up DFO last night. As in, went to download it.
(I'm not sure why either. well...)
((I do feel like a douche for shitting all over it last time in the sense that I feel like I was screaming at Deets which was not what I meant to do at all. I thought perhaps it was because I picked one of the most melee class set up in a game that is decidedly a ranged fighting game in belt scroll...uhhh, belt. Seriously, eventually there were mini-bosses that were just tedious to unwinnable (as in, chase you down, completely walk through all of your attacks like nothing then launch you into the air juggles you usually do and manage to take your entire life bar in 4 hits,) without throwing lots of money at the game....unless you played a ranged class.))
(((I mainly remember months back, oh hey! There's a female gunner in the Korean version, she kinda looks interesting. When I checked back last night, oh hey, she's in the English version now.)))
oh hey, they're in the middle of a major content patch and offline all day, oh well...
okay, the patcher went overnight, but now the game flat out refuses to recognize my controller now! oh weird...
oh FUCK that goddamn GOBLIN PAD!
I'd completely forgotten about that thing. Basically, it's a security minigame, where, you can "play" the game, but if you want to actually have access to anything, your prompted each time you log on to lead a dumb goblin to a set of numbered houses four times. It's a pin number, and even visually based, using arrow keys, these things are really only temporary solutions. For a game that's been out for a fair bit of time, this has to be cracked already, I mean, authenticators for online banking and wow shit have already been figured out...
(I think perhaps one of the worst things you could pin on WoW is that they really pushed for people to use those retarded dongles. Like, right before I stopped playing I recall reading that they wanted to package them in with new copies of the game/next expansion... It's just crying for users to become locked out of their accounts because the batteries died or it was ripped out by a cat or thrown into your drink. Even worse if you decided to use a mobile phone to do the process.)
So I forgot my pin. All the combination I typically use don't work, and I'm locked out of doing anything useful. Like, healing myself, or buying an item, or equipping something!!
And then it was just a flood of bad memories of forests and goblins for hours upon end.
It's pretty amazing how the game actively worked to scare me away from it in about a day. Here I wanted something I could control with a pad and go mindlessly fuck up some dudes at ten pee emm while Neon Night Riders is blasting, but I guess it's back to the source for that. (actually any good snes brawler soundtrack fit rather well with the game! That was the key really.)
(did I mention that when I looked at the new custom costumes for my old character, as well as the ones available to the new Gunner, look pretty awful?)
((sheesh that was alot for what was basically a half hour walking round town being reminded...etc.) |
So when you got to the actual fighting... you didn't like it? _________________ interdimensional |

The guys behind the witcher did this hilarious thing and you guys had to all go and poop on it.
The women are not your mothers or sisters. They're genuinely women-who-want-to-have-sex. The game uses the "quests" the women make you go on exactly the same way as other games use side-quests. Each girl has a story that involves a few characters or locations and they're all pretty memorable. It's a carrot on a stick thing that gets you to explore the world and see more of this beautiful thing the witcher has to offer. The ironic part is that getting laid in the game isn't good enough as far as videogame motivators go, so the equivalent here is in-game tokens.
Compare this to something like God of War where you have sex _to have sex_. While I don't look at that as distasteful, I do see it as something that merely thinks that boning-is-awesome. There are no vistas to behold or funny stories to hear about ancient-Kratos-land. It's just... well go treat the women like a one-off. |

Has anyone played F-Zero GX on an emulator? I'd be interested to see if it's as awesome in 1080p as I'd imagine. _________________ interdimensional |
