| I'm vacillating between doing story missions and completionist stuff in Red Dead Redemption. I would have finished the game by now except that I can smell tragedy coming on and I'm definitely conflicted about the lack of control over the narrative. I think I'd feel better about it if there was another company making sandbox games with aesthetic qualities close to Rockstar games that concentrated more on a sandbox narrative rather than the cinematic narrative that Rockstar has come to favour. |
Do not fear the narrative. One of the masterstrokes of the game is the way it satisfactorily accomodates the needs of the designer-written story and the freeform stuff while damaging neither. Actually, for the first time in a Rockstar game they reinforce each other rather than creating cognitive dissonance. |
The dissonance is there, it's form is merely different. Instead of the 'nonsensical actions undermining character traits' we've come to know and love from the other open-world series (Tim's example of the lead character of a cop drama shooting some kid and it never comes up), we're instead left with the absurdity of the game pretending that we even need the narrative proper. For example, take the first chapter of the game, where you're trying to get into Williams fort. You can easily take the fort by yourself, no problem. But nonetheless, the game forces you down a series of silly quests to get armaments you don't need. _________________

didn't you also say dmc2 was better than it? (p.s. that's completely retarded)
the appeal of bayonetta is the same as the appeal of dmc - it's a completely ridiculous, over the top action game that's about comboing the shit out of enemies while looking awesome doing it
if you're not into that sort of thing, yeah, you're obviously not going to appreciate bayonetta |
Here's the thing, I am into that sort of thing (quite a lot), but actually seeing bayonetta do anything amid all the various spell effects and such is nigh impossible at key moments. DMC 1-4 let you see what Dante was doing to effectively figure out the next move. Yes, DMC 2 was better than it for me, since I was motivated enough to beat DMC2 multiple times, whereas one time through Bayonetta and I never want to play it again. This is pretty conclusive proof that for me, I liked one game a lot more than the other.
Calling someone's argument "retarded" really does nothing more than say you have no counterargument, btw. |
I've never had any problem telling what's going on in Bayonetta at any point. It's kinda busy at first, but really when you give it a chance it works out spendidly. Also, it helps if you know the shortcut to skip the cutscenes (lb+back)

No. |
Actually, yes. The most effective way to get high ranks and rings is to do the stupid button mash QTE enemy deaths, at least on normal, and that shit was boring. It was boring in God of War, and I sure as fuck didn't want it invading my DMC games, but hell, there it is. |
No booji, it's not. The most effective way to get halos is to play level 2, on hard, with the Bracelet of Time and the one that make's angels mad equipped. 9 mill, easy. _________________

I wasn't talking about the most halo raising particular point. I was talking about in any given fight in the game, the easiest way to get a shitload of halos was the buton mashing QTE bullshit, which doesn't belong in the game at all. I like actually killing my enemies and being rewarded for it, not beating them up enough to trigger a cutscene that rewards me more.
|
Well even then, you're wrong man. Pick any fight, in any level, on (almost) any difficulty; I guarantee you I can score sick ring totals without even touching the Torture Attacks (unless you're talking about something else?).
As for the rest of your problems (to-long stages, the good parts of the game being buried behind a couple of hours of play)...yeah, you're pretty spot on there. It's just that, for me, it was worth it to dig through the shit to find the gold beneath. Even at it's worst, Bayonetta is still has a combat engine most games can only dream of, and the cougar form makes speeding through some of the more bs levels a game in itself. _________________

The rewards of not doing TA's are huge man. Each TA is a garunteed kill, which nets you only 100 halos. With proper comboing, you can easily earn 5 times that, and STILL get the TA as the 'finishing move'. the rewards of mastering the system are actually pretty damn great.
and how the fuck does the killgore glitch make the game button mashey at all? _________________

That is a reasonable question asked 5 or 6 years too late, I think. |
I have been out of these things.
I didn't...I didn't realize how far the infection had spread.
Is there some way to just mute the moe? Especially the level 3 boss, jesus christ so much annoying 'little girl' sounds. _________________

Riding the horse was one of the worst things in that game. Some wind waker shit, only the camera controls were worse, and you couldn't even go make a sandwich. _________________

Super Crate Box.
Yeah, kinda cute.
Vanquish.
YESYESYES. HAHAHAHAAAA. The last boss is only hard because of his minions. The hardest difficulty is GOD HARD. Not gonna beat it mind, it's not really fun to play, but still. _________________

Further Vanquish play has led to disappoint with it's current version, and hope for the sequel. The cover system is finicky as fuck, sometimes ejecting you for no reason/sticking to odd geometries/not detecting cover/pretty much everything you could imagine wrong with a cover system, and the level design can sometime be piss-poor. Throw in bafflingly destructible cover (empty crate? INVINCIBLE. Concrete barricade? Why ever bother TRYING to cover behind it?).
But the sequel gives hope. The cover flaws all stem from technical flaws (odd geometries mostly), and the level design as as much to do with the fact that their game is so different from anything else, they can't just crib it all from a predecessor.
Also, I'm starting to enjoy SSF4 now that I try to taunt every match. _________________

inFamous is a surprisingly classy little game. The missions are on the whole well done, really capitalizing on the whole open world thing, and the story is snappy in a comic booky kind of way. the constant reminder that GOOD ACTIONS INCREASE YOUR GOOD KARMA is pretty annoying though.
I also played the game I made today: http://forums.selectbutton.net/viewtopic.php?t=33106 _________________
