$240 256GB XB360 w Kinect on Amazon today. I've always wanted the Dance Central games, but was always reluctant, too. Can someone try to sell me on a 360? I have a PS3 and a fairly capable gaming PC already.

as someone who just got a free 360 after not having had access to one for 6 years, and also having a PS3 and a fairly capable PC:

90% of the stuff I'm interested in on 360 that's not available elsewhere is weird, mostly Japanese stuff from 2006-8 before the PS3 was seen as viable. Since then, there are lots of polished shmup/brawler ports if you don't like using SSF or Mame, there's Kinect stuff that I don't know shit about, and there's Halo/Gears instalments that you care about or don't. That's pretty much it.

do GamePark32 games have an internal filesystem (or whatever) in the same way DS (or N-gage) games do?

I have a couple flash games that I'd like to play during an extended roadtrip, so I'm wondering if there is a way that I can download said game and play it in something other than a (normal) web browser, so I wouldn't have to worry about problems like accidentally refreshing/changing pages when disconnected (thus being unable to play it until I regain internet access), having the controls lose focus, etc.

I'm using Google Chrome at the moment, if that is pertinent.

Flash games are typically self-contained .swf files. You can view source on the container page, find the URL pointing to the swf, then download it locally. Then there are various ways to play it, you could create a local HTML file with an embed link but there are probably even easier ways.

I once got a mono gb emulator working (very poorly) on an old cdma verizon phone because someone had wrapped it in flash and I was able to get onto the phone's filesystem and replace EZTipCalculator.swf with the emulator

Yes, or rather, GP32 games in SMC images are similar to CD-ROMS in that they should have a FAT16 filesystem inside. Albeit the game itself might store its data in a huge data block and access the card memory blocks directly, so there isn't as clean a separation as Nintendo DS filesystem, etc.

Is this true? I always assumed modern games used asynch loading of images/etc off the web. Albeit I guess anything done with ie. Flixel works like you say.

it depends on the flash game. Most are self-contained, but larger ones use multiple files. I can't remember the name of the one that we liked recently (felt like a SNES game) that was broken up into multiple files and could only be played on its creator's website...

It's often true, but not always, and yeah bigger/more recent flash games tend to call out to other SWFs (more often then they call to plain resources like image or music files). If you have something like Sothink SWF Decompiler, it can be interesting to open them up and poke around.

The ease with which simple Flash games can be grabbed and rehosted is, I assume, what allows for the ten billion spam sites out there which are just random combinations of various flash files they've stolen from somewhere else. There's also SWFchan (NSFW), a semi-comprehensive database/booru of flash files, with a few dozen games and like ten thousand AMVs, porn clips and 4chan joke flashes.

Thanks for the GP32 insight. I wonder if I can pull anything interesting out of them with VGMToolbox...

I'm curious if anyone from sbdn have grabbed themselves a DS4 to mess around with now that they're in the wild. It's been shown that it's a HID-compliant device, but I'm wondering what kind of compatibility issues (if any) people have been having.

The main issue I'm having are all these shitty-ass games that only support XInput devices and my inability to get X360CE to work. Thanks a fucking bunch, Microsoft.

Well, it turns out that this was the case with the game I was thinking of. As far as I was able to find out, the game consisted of (at least) two files, the "loader" and the main game. I was able to access the .swf for the main game, but that didn't work. It was permanently stuck on loading screen with the bar all the way full, but the "Click Start" button never appeared. At about that point I decided to give up on that approach and just keep it stuck in the browser the entire ~15 hour car ride. The game worked from start to finish.

Regardless of all that nonsense, I was still able to do what I really wanted with the game.

Pro-Tip: Don't screenshot map in a moving vehicle.

i only ask because the arcade version is on cps2, while the cps changer's games were all cps1

Of the two (?) Hori Ace Combat flightsticks that were made for the PS2, which is considered the best? Or, what are the most important pros/cons to consider between the two?

Depends on how much you care about score in these sort of things. It's nice enough to ride around on mountains and such, but the point system seemed rather arbitrary and I spent a lot of time with it.

yeah, I generally dgaf about score unless I'm trading the controller with someone on the couch for a couple hours (SSX Tricky being one of the only games I can remember doing that with regularly), so I think I'll bite

weirdly as I think about this I remember really liking SSX3's menu interface. am I misremembering something or was it actually sorta cool?

can anyone recommend me a survival game without any combat, and without heavy reliance on time-management? Preferably 3D and PC? Something along the lines of Miasmata (although Miasmata's really more about exploration than survival, since you never have to eat). I hated Lost in Blue, but can't really remember why. Never tried any of the others in that series.

I found this handy list, but it's just a big list without any sort of comment on quality.

I can parse (and possibly add to) that list if you want, but:

a) it will take a while
b) you almost certainly won't find what you're looking for, just rural neighbors
c) you need to specify/double-down on "without any combat" - ie, can there be hunting of animals who cannot harm you, can there be combat but it is theoretically possible to play without entering it, etc.

also, it's not related to your question, but if you haven't played Survival Kids (the precursor to the Lost in Blue series), you should check it out.

Wilderness survival is one of many things I've been meaning to make a topic about for a while now, especially since The Unreal World went donationware (free to play but don't let us starve). With my gaming/media time and my internet time segregated for the usual DAIS Reasons, I can't really research stuff as exhaustively as I'd like, but I can probably bang something together for you.

yeah, it's enjoyable. the one major downside is that it is almost impossible not to land tricks, which you might not even mind. Oh, and some of the "survival" gimmicks are dumb. But the game itself is solid fun.

Yeah, pretty much. it takes some actual messing up to do that.

So yeah, if you can about score, it's kinda super annoying. If you are just looking for fun times jamming on a snowboard down a big old mountain, it works real good.

I mean obviously I want to have to make an effort to do well but I'm cool with that effort coming from discovering the best lines rather than having to line up my landings perfectly. Thanks guys.

What is with the psn store? They couldn't come up with something the ps3 could actually run? It's like trying to play doom on a 286.
