yeah it's a bit embarrassing that it's so sluggish after the redesign six or so months ago. obviously they are counting on the exact same interface feeling "fresher" and "faster" with the purchase of new $400 hardware, but I have to say I get a lot less ornery about designed-obsolesence when it only applies to the part of the interface that tries to get you to spend money -- which is to say, still not nearly as bad as the 360 interface post-2011. I don't actually find the metro/tiles/whatever to be overwhelming in and of itself -- it's just that it's goofy on desktop (as has been discussed endlessly) and garish on console (when you can't customize it to remove any of the commercial junk that's now in your face). on a phone it's pretty swell.

My old fat PS3 has run continuously worse with every 'upgrade'.

There really is no excuse for FRAME LOSS IN THE FUCKING STORE though. I get that it's waiting on assets a lot. But come on, you have a multicore system, use it and properly defer update resolution. It's not that hard, geez!

My favorite feature of the new PSN store is the complete inevitability of the program crashing if you dive into the Game Archives section on the Japanese store for too long. The frame rate crunches lower and lower, and it takes more and more presses for any input to register.

It is hilarious and stupid but it's better to go through the The website. It even still has 3 pictures for each game!

Get Ray Tracers.

This kind of image-heavy store interface seems hard to write, I've noticed the Chrome web store also tends to run slow and fill up >1GB of RAM. The PS3 has 256MB of system RAM and only one full-fledged CPU core so it doesn't surprise me that the system chokes on it. The additional 256MB of graphics memory and the special SPE cores probably aren't so easy to use for this application (e.g. not sure an SPE can be used to decompress a JPEG?).

Joke: how many SPEs does it take to decompress a jpeg? Because we have eight of the fucking things and the doesn't seem to help very much.

Does anyone know the illustrator for Katamari Damacy?
Has it been the same person throughout the entire series?

even though I don't really know anything about CPU architecture other than in a historical context, I just went and re-read the wikipedia page about Cell after you made this comment, and apparently the SPEs are supposed to be equivalent in performance to the main CPU in single-precision operations, and 1/4 as powerful in double-precision operations, which would imply that as long as PS3 devkit/compilers hugely promote threading (and I am very grateful that I have no idea whether this is the case), the main CPU is indeed "that thing that's supposed to act more like a northbridge between all these mini cores" rather than "lol the 360 has three of these actually decent cores and the PS3 has a bunch of crap no one wants to code for"

I have no idea and don't need to, really. I guess it just hadn't come up in a while and it's fascinating.

Thanks, DAIS. I'll check out Survival Kids. Even though it's neither 3D nor PC it might still give me a better understanding of some of the roots of the genre.

I'll suggest you spend a few minutes playing Hide as it is close enough to some of what you are looking for, and even if you hate it you'll be done with it rather quickly regardless.

EDIT: Oh hey, I just noticed that you said survival game and not survival horror. This doesn't fit that niche at all, my bad.

...but hey, it is still swell and still only so many minutes long.

probably. the best way to answer your question would be to go about it in the reverse way -- search for "pcsx2 memcard manager" or something to that effect and read what they say about compatibility.

I've got $220 from various relatives for Hanukkah. Should I spend it on a replacement PS3, save up another $80 and get a Wii U, or - god forbid - stow it all away until either or both systems get a price drop?

How big of a library of physical games do you have for the PS3? Otherwise I would think maybe waiting to see what the PS4 has down the road via the "Cloud" for PS3 games. ::shrugs::

I would probably a Wii U or wait for a North American PS Vita TV -- if I was forcing myself to use $220 on a new console.

What are your current gaming options otherwise NGZI - if you've got enough of a backlog on any other available systems you have to play on, I say sock that money away because nearly all the things you mentioned will probably be cheaper after a while. That's what I think.

Well there's not much else I want that costs over a hundred bucks - the rest of my money typically goes to food, movies and games.

I have a lot of physical PS3 games (over 2 dozen) and hundreds of hours of save data on my old system so no way am I getting a PS4 any time soon unless Sony releases a backwards-compatible model.

I do have a massive backlog of games though, and I just ordered a PS Vita on Black Friday to boot. I'm going to want to have a Wii U by the time the new Smash Bros. comes out but other than that there's no urgency; I just worry that if I stow the money away I'll end up spending it all in smaller increments and go back to not being able to afford something big like a console.

Just hang onto the old console until it's emulated and don't worry so much about hardware BC as some kind of mutually exclusive thing. That's what I did with my GC and PS2 (mind you I didn't have enough interest in getting a PS3 until some time after the two of them could be emulated on a $400 PC in 2009 anyhow)

Felix not all of us are on the cutting edge of emulation.

Also a partial incentive to get the replacement PS3 is that once I have a new one I can give the old one away to my two closest friends who just moved into a bachelor pad and don't have a game console yet (the disc drive is broken but otherwise it still works just fine). I guess if I get a Wii U I might give him my Wii also.

Oh, yeah, if it wasn't clear, I was actually in favour of the "get a replacement PS3" decision, and even moreso with the information from your most recent post.

just don't spend too much money on something that's now technically obsolete. I'm actually looking forward to a relatively long "legacy" lifespan for my PS3 -- I didn't get one until Dork Souls, and I've been much happier working through a backlog of titles (relatively few of which I'd even previously identified as wanting to play, and almost all of which have been released on PSN by now) than I expected when I got it. it takes up very little space standing vertical next to my desk, has relatively low power consumption, works with the PS1 and PS2 controllers + USB dongles I have on hand (as I just found out from Diablo 3 this weekend), and Cell emulation on x86 admittedly isn't looking too likely anytime soon. there's nothing on the horizon I'm planning to buy for it other than maybe EDF4, but it complements my PC even better than I anticipated, and I don't have any compulsion to get rid of it.

On the PS3 topic, is there a thread about which PS3 exclusives are worthwhile? I recently got a PS3 and after beating Demon's Souls twice I'm branching out to other stuff. I've got Journey, Ico/Shadow, Yakuza 3 & 4, Uncharted 2, 3d Dot Game Heroes, and some stuff from PSN+ like Dragon's Dogma.

I have plenty to play now but I could do with a list of games to keep an eye out for.

depends on whether you've also got a 360. if not, listing stuff that isn't available on PC: Red Dead, Afterburner Climax, Platinum stuff (ymmv -- Vanquish is probably best if you aren't sick to death of cover shooters, but Anarchy Reigns, Bayonetta, and Revengeance are all good-ish depending on your enthusiasm for their respective sub-genres and your willingness to forgive certain issues), Neo-SSX, Diablo 3 (for local multiplayer only).

If you already have a 360, DeS, Journey, Uncharted 2, maaaaaybe Sound Shapes is pretty much the whole list.

I have a 360 and a ton of games for it, including bayonetta, vanquish, red dead, dog days, most of the region free cave shooters...

which brings me to Ketsui, which is region free on PS3. I probably should get that.

DeS and Journey were 100% worth buying this system for alone, the rest is a nice bonus.

F-Zero GX is better, but Wipeout HD is very good, and the best sci-fi racer we got this gen.

It was a pretty bad generation ;_;

It's always weird how any mention of Wipeout cannot exist without someone following up with the comment that F-Zero is better. It's like even a genre consisting of only two games must have a set tier list that everyone agrees upon. (I say two games because F-Zero and Wipeout are the only ones with any modern relevance thanks to their legacies. If we count all sci-fi racers AeroGauge would obviously be at the top.)

When I get home tomorrow I will look through my PS3 games and recommend some. Are you okay with artsy-fartsy games? The Unfinished Swan is a fun game to play around with and explore (I think there's a PS4 port in the works as well).

I'd like Wipeout HD better if not for all the random junk. Also if I wasn't using a dual shock 3, because the triggers literally hurt to use. It's a good game though yeah, I had a lot of fun with zone mode and speed laps.

Also as far as ps3 exclusives go I actually liked Dead Nation. Smash TV with zombies basically.

My Aero Guage experience is when my young cousin received the game as a unsolicited birthday gift from his mother 15 years ago. After the cake he started the game up having no idea what sort of experience to expect and was BAFFLED by it. Like, to the point he wasn't even sure if his mother knew her son in any way at all. I overheard him whisper to himself, "Why did she buy me this?"

I thought it looked pretty goofy but interesting. Is my memory serving right that its like, really bizarre? Lots of 90 degree turns, and trippy courses with big heavy looking day-glo colored Bricks for hover-cars?

It really depends on whether you like the mechanics of MGS1 or not. VR Missions pushes the mechanics to the limit and does everything that can be done with them, and you need to pull off some pretty clever techniques in order to finish some of the later missions.

So Starbound is out! My friend tried it, crashed, booted again and noticed a terrible framerate and put it away 'till they fix that shiz.

It looks like a cool game, but man this 'pay to play beta' thing just never seems to work the way it should.
