PC gaming is getting frustrating for me recently, and I'd like to see if anyone here can help me without actually making a thread all about it.

I live in a building with distributed internet service, similar to a college dormitory, but my server administrator has set up an unrestricted IP address for me. Nonetheless, I sometimes have seemingly insurmountable problems connecting for multiplayer stuff, and my admin has no idea why that would happen.

For example, several months ago I discovered that I was unable to play CoD: MW2 Spec Ops cooperatively. I can play all of the normal multiplayer stuff in that game with no connection problems, but when I try to play co-op it sits eternally on a box that says "connecting to IWNet."

Yesterday, I bought Battlefield: Bad Company 2 while it was on sale on Steam. I guess seeing footage of Medal of Honor made me feel like getting in on the most relevant current multiplayer FPS. Actually, I was pleasantly shocked to find that I can run the game on full settings with almost no problems (although for some reason the sound of my right-hand-held weapon is in my left ear). But if I try to login because I want to do multiplayer, it fails repeatedly to connect to EA's central whatever.

Oh yeah, and Bf:BC2 also could not retrieve Punkbuster during install.

Recently, I've found that I even timeout when trying to connect to dedicated L4D2 servers while the rest of my group is fine. This result recurs.

I'm starting to feel like living where I'm living is locking me out of current games more and more. If I were to give in and purchase, say, Assassin's Creed 2 or Command & Conquer 4, I suspect that I would be unable to communicate with the respective servers for that new always-online DLC crap. I dunno if there is a way to test this, but just the fact that I am afraid of the possibility is kind of unacceptable, you know?

Does anyone have any idea what my problem is and how I can rectify it?

Oh, yeah. Also. I can't install Mass Effect 1's Bringing Down the Sky DLC or whatever it's called.

And I can't connect to Impulse at all. Which sucks since I own games there and am interested in Stardock's Elemental game.

Well, this is interesting. I got a reply to my support ticket at Activision for MW2, and the guy had me check a port at whatismyip.org. I was surprised that it came up closed. I then clicked the button there for common gaming ports, and they all came up closed!

Is there an effective difference between designating an IP address unrestricted and actually setting individual ports to be open? Because my network guy (who is probably not a gamer) indicated quite clearly to me that having an unrestricted IP means that all ports are available.

And it certainly has been fine for most things. For example, if I were to change my IP address or let it go dynamic, I would be unable to connect to EVE Online. Hell, I know for a fact that I would be unable to connect to Steam! I've seen it.

So this is really surprising to me. I guess I'll have it out with him tomorrow.

Edit:

Wait, now the Activision guy says:

Quote:
Closed is OK,

Spec Ops is run through the singleplayer version of the game. Make sure you alter/update your firewall/AV exceptions for the game.

There should be no difference between DMZ and opening specific ports except the DMZ opens all ports.

I'm not sure I understand what that means. Also, I've tried running the game with no firewall or antivirus.

Does DMZ mean the same thing as having an unrestricted IP? Or am I still within my distributed internet's larger firewall?

The Activision guy thinks that I mean DMZ when I say unrestricted. I'll ask my network guy if that is indeed what he did.

The IP address reported by ipconfig (which is the static address I was told to specify in my TCP/IP properties) is shown as my internal (LAN) address at whatismyip.org, but the actual address is shown as 69.127.83.197. My internal IP is a 10.x.x.x form. Does that mean I am behind a NAT?

If it's any use, MW2 says at the bottom that my NAT type is strict.

Also, if I am in the situation where my admin would have to forward ports for each game I'd be surprised since I only have problems with specific games. I don't know what you mean by "it can't be done for more than one person" though; I am only one person!

Also, it's not a university at all, just in case you're making any assumptions about the architecture. It's just the closest similarity I can think of; each room has a jack in the wall but they all feed to the basement and hook up to a hub there.

Actually it basically is like that. I have an apartment in a building that has 6 other apartments and two offices that we can assume are occupied by old ladies who barely know how to use a computer.

Okay, so... I'm behind a NAT. And I want to have DMZ set up, and if I do then games like MW2 and Bf:BC2 should work just fine, yeah? But if I don't have DMZ already then I wonder what the fuck "unrestricted" means.

Just to make sure I understand: Having DMZ and giving him a list of ports for games I care about would be redundant, right?

1) Valve said when announcing Portal 2 that it would be a full-length, standard-priced release. That presumably means that it costs $60 on PS3 and 360 and $50 on PC. I think that's how L4D2 was priced, and I'd expect similar here.

2) During E3, Doug Lombardi told I think IGN that the single-player game is roughly twice the length of Portal and that the co-op campaign (which is entirely unique and distinct from the solo play) is the same again, so Portal 2 is effectively 4 times as long. The way he said it made it sound like twice as long was a very conservative estimate, and I got the impression that it was more like 2.5 or 3 times as long. Anyway, although he said that they didn't want to make Portal 2's single-player twenty hours long or anything too crazy, it sounds like it should be a solid eight to ten hours each for single player and co-op.

If I buy a Logitech PlayGear case for my PSP 3000 both for carrying purposes in a bag and for protecting the screen from dust accumulation around the house, do I really need screen protectors as well? I have screen cleaner and cloths already.

This is excellent.

Quick Question: I am trying to decide whether I can put my Playstation in the closet. How does the PS2's backwards compatibility work? Does it actually have the PS1's hardware inside there in some sense, or is it software emulation? In other words, are PS1 games played on a PS2 exactly the same as they are when played on a PS1?

Really? I thought they used software emulation. Doesn't it upscale the PS2 games, and weren't there occasional complaints about... I dunno, fidelity issues with the emulation?

But regardless of what they used to do, it would be really super nice if there were a PS2 inside my PS3 right now.

I'm planning to buy a DSi XL later this week and need to confirm something. I realize that homebrew was killed along with piracy devices when the DSi came out, but I do not know whether the platform's region-free status changed. If I get an XL, can I still play games from other regions? (FYI, Hotel Dusk 2 came out only in Europe on like Friday.)

Also, I'm going to want to not buy anything downloadable on it since it won't transfer to 3DS, correct?

I can't answer your main question, but this isn't true. This is indeed very far from true, and we're getting some fascinating new flashcarts now (one of which is capable of slot 1 gba emulation!)

I haven't paid attention to the scene for like a year now, so I had no idea! That is very surprising and could be of great interest to me at some point. Thanks for setting me straight!

Mega Man 9 & 10 are now bundled for $15 on PSN. Should I go for it, or are they better on another platform? I thought I had gotten the impression from comparing on Metacritic that they are better on Wii, but it was a long time ago and I don't recall why.

Someone here kept saying the PS3 version is smeary while the Wii version is the way to go...

Actually, I just came across a 1up review for 9 that compared all three platforms and recommended going with the Wii because the classic controller feels most natural. So I'll just let this PSN deal pass after all.

Because, seriously, who cares whether you play MM9 on PS3 or Wii or whatever.

If a guy owns all three consoles and the game is slightly different on each (which it always, always is), I think it is perfectly reasonable to expect reviews to inform him as to which purchase is best.

I'll back up the Complete recommendation. The Complete version for each Stalker game is intended to be a package that realizes features according to the ideal vision of the developers. It's a lot more than just bug fixes, but unlike some mods and mod packages it humbly avoids overly broad changes to game design and balance. I was impressed enough with what they managed to do for the original game that I became disinterested in playing any subsequent titles until after their requisite Complete packages had been finished.

What's to stop English-speakers from playing the Final Fantasy XII International Zodiac Job System version since the voice acting and other dialogue is all available in English? Were the menus left in Japanese only or something? Also, did they make any changes (read: improvements) to the story for this version?

Wanting to know about this as well. I haven't gotten around XII yet and the majority of what I've heard seems to support that this would be a superior version, considering that it "fixes" the license points system? I don't know what that means, but my girlfriend acknowledged her distaste with the license system and she's usually spot-on with me in tastes, so any more reason to play a better version of a game is also another reason to start up modding my PS2 slim again.

I did play XII back when it was released, so while I am not completely clear on the changes wrought by the International Version I can at least say that a significant problem in the original was that the license boards of all of your characters, which probably branched off towards various specializations as you played through the game, wound up homogenizing by the end due to simple excess of License Points so that the differences defining characters' capabilities became completely flattened out.

In other words, you would spend 3/4 of the game having Balthier exploring, I dunno, axes and black magic while Fran worked her way up the trees for longbows and curative spells; the two characters would become more specialized and diverse for the first forty to sixty hours or whatever. But then you would be doing some late-game side hunts and exploration with probably a good ten hours or more still to go on the main story alone, and suddenly you'd notice that Balthier has gained the legal right to use every possible type of axe and attack spell, wear all of the armor and helmets and stuff, and even wield, say, most of the line of swords that you had chosen as a crossover with another character. All at once you realize that it won't be long before he also can use white magic and bows. He and Fran are blending together. They lose their tactical identities. The gambit system becomes a great deal less interesting.

If anything, I'm underselling this process; I seem to recall it happening long, long before I saw myself completing the game. I actually was a fan of the license system other than this important issue. It's really nice how the characters would discover access to different attribute enhancements or quickening/summon panels depending upon where their focuses took them across the board.

From what I've read, I would surmise that the International Version implements some kind of job system similar to that in Final Fantasy Tactics in which every character has multiple license boards each pertaining to different jobs, which can probably be switched at will. Assuming that I haven't misunderstood, I do not know that I like this solution to the problem. I think that it would undercut the gambit system. My preferred correction would have been a simpler balance change to how quickly license points are doled out.

The things stopping Americans from playing FFXII:International:

1) Though the VA is English, the text is Japanese.
2) It only plays on Japanese PS2s

There is a complete translation dump that, afaik, moves ALL the FFXII text from the original US release to the FFXII:International release. To play that version you need to take an image of FFXII International and apply a patch with the original FFXII text (maybe from an iso, maybe from a text pack. I'm not sure). From there you can play FFXII in full English on a modded PS2 or an emulator. I hear it's awesome, but it also seems like a lot of work on top of playing FFXII again.

That actually sounds pretty great to me. I'm just glad there is such a solution available at all. There are other games for which I want to do similar things (such as applying the fan translation patch to an image of the Japanese Symphony of the Night), so I don't mind so much. I'm an idealistic library builder.

Besides, I'll get you suckers to teach me how to mod my PS2.

Thanks!

Yeah, something like that. When a character joins your party, you get to choose 1 of 12 different jobs that once taken, cannot be changed. Each job has a different board that forces a focus to spells/skills/etc. that are normally associated with that job (White Mage gets all White spells). So far as I can tell, you can put all characters into the same job. I guess it encourages multiple playthroughs to try out different combinations or challenges without self-enforcement.

I see. Well, that seems like it would be functional enough as a solution, but it is rather inelegant. I liked having all of my characters exploring different areas of the same license board with occasional overlaps. I am also loathe to choose a character's permanent role within my party immediately upon meeting him or her.

Do we like Gex, guys? I realized suddenly that I missed the whole series even though I remember knowing it was popular at the time. It looks like it could be fun, but I can see it being tedious, as well. Same question for the Spyro series; I never played those either and wonder if I missed something good.

Thanks, guys! I am somewhat vulnerable to collect-a-thon play; I never tried DK64, but I really didn't like Banjo & Kazooie (and don't know why it has a strong reputation). Spyro sounds like it might be a borderline case for me, but I'm willing to give it a chance. I also remember reading that there was one GBA entry in the series that turned out really well; I'll have to figure out which one that was again.

While we're on this topic, do you gents have feelings about the Crash Bandicoot series?

I don't know why the heck you would think this is surprising!

I wasn't surprised so much as I just don't know much about either. I kind of petered out with Banjo Kazooie... I remember maybe being in a witch's... tree... house? I dunno, I feel like I played through the equivalent of like three or four levels, and it was okay, but I just got bored. DK64 is kind of infamous, so I've never touched it even though I have a lot of love for Donkey Kong Country. I'm even less interested in looking at it now, but I'm willing to give BK another chance! I don't remember it very well, but I don't recall having any real issue with it. I also didn't know it was on Xbox! Weird. I wonder if it's better than the N64 version?

Glad you brought up Conker; that's another that I was curious about, but, you know, it's well into Rare's dark times, being two years after DK64.

I'm all over Jak 2. I have the main trilogy now and intend to play through it very soon! I'll decide afterwards whether or not to go for Daxter on the PSP. Jak X looks good too for what it is.

Thanks to firenze for that PSP round-up. I would like to add that I went out of my way to seek out opinions on Knights in the Nightmare DS vs. PSP; I was worried that it might be similar to Chinatown Wars where the dual screen presentation and touch controls were important to the concept such that something vital was lost in the prettier PSP version. However, it seems that the consensus for Knights is that this PSP release is an improvement. I'm glad that I never got around to buying it on DS.

Knights in the Nightmare is part of the same universe as Yggdra Union and Riviera if you care about that sort of thing. You know, Matsuno style.

I also enjoyed the discussion last page on 3D platformers. I wish I had forty bucks or whatever right now for that Sly Collection. I want that so bad. I hope I like the Jak and Ratchet games as much as I like at least the first Sly.

Bennett: Glad you are enjoying SotN. My suggestion re: Castlevania would be to play Rondo of Blood and Symphony as peak representations of both the old and new styles. Actually, I wish that you hadn't started SotN already because it is a direct sequel to Rondo. If you buy Dracula X Chronicles on PSP, you will get a polygonal (read: uglier) remake of Rondo that includes the original Rondo and Symphony as unlockables.

If you want more Castlevania after that, I would suggest Castlevania III on the Famicom (better sound) and Super Castlevania IV on the SNES for original flavor as well as Order of Ecclesia for extra crispy. I haven't played Bloodlines for the Genesis, but it seems something like an odd cousin to me.

Hi there! Honestly, at the moment, I only log in once a week or so to queue skills for training, but I am looking forward to having time to come back and really play again. I am not completely sure what you are asking, but if you want to learn I cannot recommend EVE University enough. It's a truly wonderful community. Participating in their classes is a joy, and they freely share their knowledge on some really esoteric and interesting stuff that you would be hard-pressed to find elsewhere, like information warfare, espionage, and stealth tactics. There is also a ton of resources even if you do not join the corporation, including a library of excellent recordings of classes both unique and recurring. You may as well go there and listen to an introduction to E Uni; I think Kelduum Revaan taught and recorded that one. So that's the best resource I know of, and just asking questions in their corp chat is probably the best way to get answers to anything you would ever want to know. Is that the sort of thing you are looking for?

Wow, typing that just made me want to immediately jump in rather badly. By the way, look me up; my character's name is Noren Sen.

Despite being redundant by now, I will also say that emphasizing small arms and speech is the best way to build a character if you want to have no doubts that you can make it through Fallout. After that, I like lockpicking. For a really safe bet, take high perception, agility, and charisma. Don't let your strength get too low (I think 4 is good), or you won't be able to use any of the weapons you find along the way.

Hey, thanks! Yeah, I know I was a little vague, but this is really what I wanted! Hopefully I can find people to bug with questions while I play there. At least I'll load some of these lectures onto my MP3 player and listen to them; it seems like a great resource. I'll see about joining them. I'd definitely like to participate in PvP of some sort, though I suspect that day is pretty far off.

That's a common misconception about EVE, actually; you can be relevant to PvP as early as a week after you've created a character. Tacklers, for example, are always in demand. Just make sure you have basic skills in your racial electronic warfare skill, warp disruption, webbing, frigate piloting, and afterburner or microwarpdrive use. E Uni will give you lots of opportunities to participate. Playing a suppressive or ensnaring role is just as vital as being capable of big damage dealing. Also keep in mind that those large, powerful ships that you can't pilot yet are very ineffective when it comes to targeting small craft, so no ship class ever goes out of style. You really don't need high skill levels or expensive Tech II modules to be useful, either. On the other hand, if you want to take a rifter or some other frigate out and hunt people and just have adventures on your own, you'll obviously have a hard time if you can't compete one-on-one.

The University organizes huge fleet operations to go hunting for pirates and hostile players in dangerous systems, and when that isn't going on you can always find groups to hook up with for high-level mission running and salvaging or mine op escort. Other corporations often declare war on E Uni just because they wrongly assume that noobs are easy targets, so depending upon the situation you can often find a small squad planning to go out and patrol for enemy players without even needing to go far. It's great to have the opportunity to experience small-scale PvP like that early on, and people are happy to give you a chance at honest-to-goodness tactical squad leadership, too!

There's no better way to learn than by doing this stuff. Much more important than how high and expensive your skills and kit are is how experienced you are in combat. Knowing how to properly use your overlay to immediately find and mark as target or destination various kinds of ships and landmarks or how to optimally approach a target for warp scrambling and webbing is much, much more important than having a shiny ship with big numbers behind it. Oh, and the corporation has a number of programs that will help you to get outfitted. For basic stuff like bread-and-butter tackle gear, they will readily provide everything. And they wouldn't want you to go out with an expensive ship anyway because you will get exploded and the cash value on the kill makes the bad guys look good.

Nice! Yeah, trust me; wars happen all the time. You may well get sick of them, actually, because they are so frequent and disruptive in a few ways. Most importantly, there are special wartime policies that will prevent you from wandering out on your own to do stuff like run missions. But they have a service in place to allow you to easily drop out of the corporation for the duration of the war and then rejoin for this reason.

guys quick is the HD Sands of Time on PSN actually just Sands of Time in HD?

I've been itching to play it and wouldn't mind forking over $15 since it's not much less if I just pay for the PS2 version (and I'd rather not play it on PC). Also really torn on which console I should get Pac-Man CE DX for.

I am pretty sure that is exactly right. It's supposed to be the same thing as what we got with the God of War and Sly collections. So my understanding is that it's Sands of Time, exactly the same game, remastered in high def with optional 3D and trophies. Actually, the Sly Collection might be a bad comparison since the developer (not Sucker Punch) added minigames and I think did other little things. As far as I know, Sands of Time as a game is unaltered. I really want it, but I'm trying to wait until next week as I can't really afford it.

Are you implying that CE DX is out now on PSN? I thought it was going to be out yesterday, but it wasn't mentioned in the store update blog post. Anyway, isn't popular feeling that community stuff like leaderboard activity works better on XB Live?

Oops yeah, I think it's out today on XBL, not sure when it'll come out on PSN. I'm kind of torn because I'm still not a fan of 360's dpad, really, despite eventually getting used to it and good at it for normal Pac-Man C.E. Will still prolly get it on the 360 though.

I was afraid Ubisoft might fuck Sands of Time up in some way but sounds like they didn't so I will prolly get it.

Oh, damn, that's a good point. People complained about the CE controls on 360, and that dpad is patently awful. I'm glad I'll be getting it on PSN now.

I think these HD remasters are a sure thing. Maybe I'm being naive, but I would be surprised if any of them got fucked with since they are kind of meant to be definitive collectors' releases, right?

BTW, happy birthday!

So this week's PSN update is live and brings Spelunker HD among other things. I've seen it written by a few people here that this is some kind of miracle of a game, and I think I've also seen that it was a huge deal in Japan earlier this year. But the trailer didn't really impress me. I guess the appeal is something intangible or maybe roguelikeish. Could someone sell it to me or point me to an approved review?

I dunno, maybe I got people's talk confused. The PSN game is Spelunker HD. Is there a console or HD version of Derek Yu's Spelunky as well?

Spelunky XBLA isn't out yet. Probably won't be in 2010.

as far as I'm aware, the appeal of Spelunker HD is that it's the somewhat modernized descendant of a game that made absolutely no concessions to playability - the player had to learn through first-hand experience what mistakes could screw them over. It's a bit different from a game where dangers are explicitly outlined (most games) or ones where dangers are meant to be hidden and discovered through trial and error (La Mulana, roguelikes, more hardcore dungeon crawlers, etc). You could think of it as a title where true mastery is forced through patience and endurance on the part of the player - something increasingly rare in video games. More than learning how to interact with the world around you, you have to be able to catch yourself when you're about to make a mistake.

For a lot of people, of course, this isn't really fun at all. It's definitely masochistic to a certain degree. But I'm fairly sure the HD version smooths over some of the more frustrating elements of Irem's version of the game, as well as adding things like multiplayer (six player split-screen!).

That does sound very interesting. I appreciate the detailed explanation! I may wait for a sale, but this is going on my list.

I asked about this screenshot in a Galaxy Oddity thread, and Laurel Soup told me that it's a shot of the item shops from Phantasy Star Online. I have no experience with any Phantasy Star games and don't really know much about PSO/PSU/PSP, so I went to YouTube and was disappointed to find that most of these games seem to take place in generic rocky and grassy fantasy landscapes and look like fairly uninteresting MMOs.

I'm just wondering if anyone would be willing to actually recommend one of these games to me or to suggest an alternative that offers a similarly colorful sci-fi world to wander around in. I realize I'm being vague; basically, if that screenshot reminds you of another video game, I'd like to hear about it. I didn't want to clutter up the Galaxy Oddity thread. It's okay if this doesn't go anywhere; like I said, I know it's vague.

Am I to understand that I can download and play Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst entirely for free here? Is this the thing that I should be doing? Do other people still play this, and will I meet them during play on that server? I was looking for a legitimate way to buy Blue Burst, and there doesn't seem to be one anymore.

Is it okay to skip PSO Episode 3, the card strategy game?

Does it matter in the least if I haven't played PS 1-4?

Do you guys not like PS0 or PSP?

What is the current state of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords restoration? A few searches have revealed to me that the most promising effort, by Team Gizka, dead-ended sometime during this last summer when their website just closed up without announcement, leaving the project unfinished. Is there currently a respectable and complete option for playing this game?

I've been reading a lot about the fictional universe of Warhammer 40k, and it's got me rather fascinated at the moment. I can't afford an enormous pile of books just now, so I am strongly considering putting down $20 for Dawn of War 1 Gold on Steam. I have played a bit of Dawn of War 2, and I have played the Homeworld games; I have no doubt that I will enjoy whatever Relic has going on for the RTS gameplay of the original Dawn of War set. Sheer fun or compatibility to my taste is not my concern, but I have three other questions:

1) Does owning expansions change their predecessors' single-player experience in any way?

2) Would you consider Dawn of War to be a strong and compelling story as far as Warhammer 40k is concerned?

3) Do you think that this is a good value for a prospective buyer only interested in single-player stories/campaigns (and not multiplayer)?

Thanks for this; both the information on Gizka and the viable alternative beta are exactly what I had been looking for.
