Dawn of War Stuff
1) Does owning expansions change their predecessors' single-player experience in any way?
2) Would you consider Dawn of War to be a strong and compelling story as far as Warhammer 40k is concerned?
3) Do you think that this is a good value for a prospective buyer only interested in single-player stories/campaigns (and not multiplayer)?
|
1) If you mean retroactively adding things, then no.
2)I'm not versed in 40k's fiction, but the story never struck me as particularly compelling, but it gets the job done. And Winter Assault's is simpler, likely due to the fact that you have campaigns for the all the races except the Space Marines, who were the focus of the original's campaign.
3)As someone who never really plays multiplayer anything, I've had a good bit of enjoyment out of it over the years. I'd say it's worth $20, though unless you're really set on getting it via Steam, you should be able to get it cheaper elsewhere. |

That was a clever arrow pointing to my clever youtube channel where I cleverly play these games.
As for your question, uh, I dunno, depends on how much you like Tomb Raider. I guess I'd say yes - the control scheme makes it play very differently, and the save crystals make it a lot more difficult and tense. The levels are very much alike but not completely alike. But it's hard to say yes when they're ultimately so similar and there's so many other games out there to play. |
The save crystal issue is entirely dependent on what version you play, the PC version didn't have that, you can save whenever. And I'll point out that part of the of the difference controls and levels is due to the differences in Lara's abilities, no climbing ropes, or swing bars and such, as well as not having boss fights in the way Anniversary does.
I think the differences are a bit more notable than you do, but agree that unless you really want to see the original and how they mixed and matched and added to what was there for Anniversary, no real reason to go for it, especially just after you cleared Anniversary, I actually did the reverse, replayed the original and picked up Anniversary, and was feeling a little burned out by the end of it. Maybe at least wait a little while.
And you could always look up some videos to see the original game, if you just want to see the changes. |

I've been listening to a lot of the podcasts, and its got my head swimming in games I need to play.
In the 'Platforming's not dead' episode someone mentioned platforming in Armored Core (comparing it to Jumping Flash) ... there is platforming in Armored Core??? I've always just assumed it was more complicated/customizable Mechwarrior. Is there some large gameplay avenue within those games that I am missing? |
I wouldn't say it's large, but there's various missions throughout the games that involve a bit of platforming. For example, one in Another Age involves you basically using giant transport planes as platforms, jumping from one to the other, the tricky part being your mission is to shoot down those very planes you have to use as platforms.
The other tricky bit being that unlike other platformers, you aren't controlling a character with set limits. You know how far Mario can jump, and can thus determine whether you need to walk, run, or simply seek another method than jumping for every gap you encounter.
In AC, how far you can go is determined by all sorts of factors in your AC build, primarily boosters, generator, leg type, and weight. Come with the wrong setup, and you just aren't going to make it. Another Age has at least one more mission aside from the one I mentioned where if you don't have sufficient boost capacity, you can't complete the mission, the other one involving getting to the other side of a large canyon. |

Does anyone know (or have the actual discs available to reference) how the songs were ordered on the CDs for the Quake 2 expansion packs?
This page gives me the song names and what comes from where, and while its listing for the original Q2 tracks are in order as they were on disc, for the expansions it only says that each had 5 new songs mixed with 5 songs of the previous product (The Reckoning mixed in with Q2's, Ground Zero mixed with The Reckoning's), and which songs they were, it doesn't tell me which tracks they were on the disc.
I just got digital versions and I want the music playing as it originally was. |

Somebody else might have whipped up the second version of Pressure Point, since Sonic Mayhem doesn't list the last two tracks on the original Q2 discs which were composed by somebody else.
Or maybe it was one longer song that got split in two after it left their hands.
Whatever happened, this info works for me! |

Counterpoint: I've long enjoyed Mechwarrior games with keyboard and mouse.
Beyond Mechwarrior, there's also the Earthsiege/Starsiege series. Yes, it consists of things other than Tribes.
EDIT: Also, Heavy Gear 1 and 2. A bit of a different beast from the above, as HG is basically Canadian VOTOMS, so you're more like a great big infantryman with wheels on your feet and rockets sticking off your back. |
