Valve's big "innovation" is those awful cutscenes, and from how pissed everybody got about Heavy Rain, I'm really surprised this game generated any interest at all.

i don't see how there's any comparing the two

valve's cutscenes are still just that, cutscenes, even if you can walk around in them... there's still actual gameplay to enjoy outside of them

heavy rain is some pretentious twat stringing a bunch of cutscenes together and calling it a video game

To me, Half-Life 2 seems like some fat twat throwing some boring scenes over a bad FPS. This is the comparison I guess?

HL2 still has a FPS in there somewhere though.

Heavy Rain doesn't have anything beyond its cutscenes.

I've noticed a few people do this in this thread.

To which I feel obligated to say: knock it off guys, it's dumb. Portal didn't contain any memes, it's the people who played the game who created the memes. "The cake is a lie" was written on one wall somewhere in the game, the Companion Cube lasted a minute or two before you tossed it into a furnace, etc. The game didn't spam any of these things.

I don't think I need to explain why blaming a game for its fanbase is ridiculous.

No, I mean that they consciously were aiming for something that fans would constantly quote.

How do you even measure whether something was intended to be quotable or not? You could level this accusation at practically anything.

I don't think Portal's tongue-in cheek sense of humor necessarily means they were trying to turn message board posters into quote machines.

Portal's humor seemed fairly consistent to me.
