We are a funny lot on this board, aren't we? NTSC-uk provided the link on its 7 page and they all revelled in it, loving it.

It's got a lot of answers (and short stories) from the game's main scenario writer, and explains pretty much everything in asinine detail. Which depending on how you chose to interpret things could ruin it utterly for you. I'm kinda disappointed (disturbed) with some stuff, but I like how they intentionally set out to only provide you with bad endings. The entire story is so unashamedly melancholy and just plain awful in many regards. |

I thought Nier was constantly making my PS3 beep for quite some time. Until I realized that the noise it made when your energy restores to full is nearly identical to the beep the PS3 makes...
Also, I, like others before me, failed to notice the quest marker for the fishing quest and failed at fishing for quite some time before turning off the game and going to sleep. Now that I've looked it up, I'll get back on track soon enough. _________________

Yeah it's interesting how the fishing is structured much like old RPGs. It doesn't tell you it's too difficult/impossible it just assumes that you'll understand it's too difficult/impossible. Video Game Logic tells us we were doing something wrong though, so you keep trying. _________________ My Hawt Blog Vita Games

13 bucks was too good an offer to not buy it, so … I guess I have it now. Not that I'll immediately start playing it, since I still have to finish the current game (IU) first, but I kinda am looking forward to this. _________________

Where did you get it for $13? I was about to order it from Amazon for $20, but then I decided to read this thread. _________________

I don't know where he found it for 13, but it is 18 used over at gamefly. That includes shipping I think. I got it for 20 new at k mart, which in the end I feel was a steal. _________________

I've personally yet to find a tri ace game that does anything for me. I think I liked tales of phantasia? I also am sort of ambivalent on Motoi Sakaraba's music.
This probably needs a new thread. I can do this later when I'm not on my phone. _________________

I can't say the goofy cutscenes didn't fill me with curiosity, though. I've been considering renting it. |

X360 version; on amazon, depending on your country and shipping:

Well, what can I say … it is.
See, I have that urge to play tri-Ace games, for whatever reason, and the last few years where filled with quite a bunch of them. It's not that I'd consider them being the best games out there, nor do I have some masochistic longing for battle-systems like Rya did. Like, I wondered why I did finish Valkyrie Profile 2, as it took me about fifty hours to start having, well, fun.
And I guess that this counts most when it comes to tri-Ace games. Often they end up being fun for the wrong reasons, and having Motoi Sakuraba on board seals the deal. SO4, VP2, RoF, the collaboration with Monolith (re: the Baten Kaitos games) are the most recent ones I've played, and IU + Eternal Sonata (-Crescendo again) are the only two that are left on the to-do list. I even kinda had a "shit, if I have finished those two, I have no tri-Ace/Motoi Sakuraba game left waiting for me"-moment when starting to play IU… so yeah, desperate etc. etc.
And, to be honest, Infinite Comedy is actually this, a wonderful tongue-in-cheek comedy RPG that has some nice ideas. The cast is the icing on the cake, leaves one wondering though if someone actually wanted this game to be that entertaining … alas, why would one play IU? Think of it as a movie that would be featured in MST3K and you see from where I am coming. The "cutscenes" and character development has been mentioned on several occasions before, I refrain from adding to that.
That aside, some nice ideas (nothing like running around, being accompanied by a second party, having set your party to "save MP" and seeing the other party using all the spells they have, even if it's just a small enemy) and, again, Sakuraba make this worthwhile.
But still, I wish that they'd finally step up to deliver the long overdue VP3, as they should have put out enough games that could count as tech-demos.

I'd have some things to say about Motoi Sakuraba as well, for abovementioned reasons. _________________

| for when the thread is inevitably split off: I think Sakuraba can be extremely repetitive and he composes for way too many games, but "Highbrow" (especially the band/live versions) makes me forgive it all. |

Big surprise, game arrived today and is, still surprising, actually a sealed, new copy. Coincidentally (not really), I continued playing IU and reached the second disc in a record-time as far as Squenix, let alone tri-Ace games are concerned: 10 hours and some minutes. _________________

brother (currently playing new Castlevania) played an hour on Sunday and already didn't want to go back to Castlevania anymore. This made me wonder, whether a.) Nier is so good, b.) Castlevania so bad, c.) both apply. In any case, I'm looking forward to playing Nier, have only seen the opening movie and already had a great time, which is a good sign in my book. _________________

I've still only played for a couple of hours (Demon's Souls still has me by the throat (and I like it)), but Nier mostly struck me as, within those two hours, aesthetically pleasing yet implausible and melodramatic, narrative-wise. The way the events progress -- Nier decides to randomly tell Yonah some bedtime story about a flower that will cure her of her illness forever, and then he acts confused and angry when he finds out she went to the place where she might find this flower (cue GIVE ME BACK MY DAUGHTER YOU MONSTERS) -- is just really silly and kind of anime, but I guess I'm just as silly for being slightly annoyed at poor writing in a jRPG. Even one as unique as this. It just goes to show even further that at this point I can generally only appreciate really minimal or weird/surreal storytelling in videogames (e.g. Shadow of the Colossus, Demon's Souls, Killer7, etc. -- though there are exceptions, such as Half-Life 2). Maybe Nier gets better eventually, after its weak beginning, but for now I'm only drawn in by its combat and atmosphere.
Oh, and then there's the old guy with Alzheimer's muttering about vegetables on sale "today" (every day) whenever you walk past him, as he wanders aimlessly outside the library. What is this, Oblivion? |

Castlevania is pretty bad, yes, but it has nothing to do with Nierr, except that Nier is pretty good, even with it's flaws. |

I'm a little sad to hear this about the new Castlevania. I was looking at the Gamefan review in Barnes & Noble last night, and it looks kind of gorgeous... but I could see (based on the demo) how it's not a very good game. I've never liked God of War very much, either, so... _________________

| For those asking about prices, it's now $15 new at GameStop and like $12 used or so. I'll probably pick it up on my way home from work today. Any notable differences between the PS3 and 360 versions? |

Yeah after hearing about this, I had to pick it up. I have to say that the beginning of the game, the past, where everything looks like the movie adaptation of The Road but with snow instead of ash, was visually compelling beyond belief. The actual game itself, is just starting to open up, and I am in love with the dodge system of the game. I don't often comment on the necessity of a soundtrack with most games, but I feel that Nier's soundtrack is integral to understanding the craft and importance of Cavia as a developer. It's brilliant really.
Out of curiosity is the DLC for the game worth it? Has anyone tried it? _________________

The DLC is kinda cool if you're a big fan of the gameplay. It's all constructed of existing content -- hell, it's called "The World of the Recycled Vessel" -- but some of the fights are tough and/or interesting if you're properly leveled for them. There are a couple of gimmick areas which will require you to use Word abilities you might otherwise never touch, plus the remixed soundtrack and funky visual filters give the whole thing this really weird ambiance. Plus, the alternate costumes are pretty neat. _________________

It is a selectable campaign from your house, and I think the costumes are for the whole game, but only selectable when you start. _________________

The costumes, like the difficulty level, are selected from the Options menu on the title screen. You can save your game, quit to title, change the difficulty or outfit, then load your save again and the changes will stick. _________________
