I don't suppose there's any decent way of exploring PS3 file systems and trying to get at the script?

The other way I've thought of is asking MagWeasel since he's said he did a lot of the translating.

Yeah, it was this sort of thing I was hoping for. Apparently it isn't as trivial as I imagined...

Just read on Wikipedia that NieR was greenlit by Square for the sake of having an Action RPG aimed at an older demographic than Kingdom Hearts. I think that's pretty funny.

Of course Squeenix can only do something right by accident.

They worked on The Last Story with Mistwalker, and also developed some game called "Animal Resort" for the 3DS

In December of 2010, it was announced that there could be more NieR-related stuff announced this year. Maybe that was the audio drama?

Official NIER Website wrote:
With NIER, experience seamless in-battle cinematics and explore hauntingly familiar lands, intense action-packed battles, and storytelling like only Square Enix can do.

Yeah, that's still happening. Hits shelves this September. But according to NIER's Facebook page, it was available for sale at Comic-Con at the Square Enix booth.

guys i beat this game like yesterday. it made me cry on several different occasions, i'm only slightly ashamed to admit it. i think the part that got me the most was the immediate beginning to NG+. i could empathize. well, you know. sort of. that and fierce loyalty always gets me right here. i thought the gameplay itself was pretty alright but the soundtrack and VA and character design and dialogue and most importantly, the plot are all pretty gosh darn fantastic. felt a little cheated with emil's VA though. motherfucker sounded like ash ketchum. second favorite game to come out of 2010 behind dead prem, and just in front of K+L 2 dog days.

guys play this game. i haven't gotten any ending other than the A ending yet though, i'm... waiting for it. i want to savor the game.

Don't be ashamed. This game is made for feeling
Are you skipping the side quests? Because if so you are a fool. A lot of them come with really fantastic dialogue between the principal cast.

i don't know how many side quests i skipped but i lost some due to the five years later bit and then later i got about 3 different quests asking me for various rare junk heap drops so i was like fuck this and beat the game. i did get the 30 quest cheev though. at some point doing the side quests just is not worth it.

oh, yeah, and i couldn't do any of the other quests involving me going to the strange thing store in Facade because for whatever reason it would only allow me to have one quest at a time lined up with that guy. that happened with a couple things in the game and it was pretty frustrating.

A lot of the quests are kind of obnoxious busywork, but some of them end up being interesting or poignant, especially the ones that are revisited five years later.

i don't care what poignancy a quest has i am not spending my time farming 20+ titanium alloys just so some fuck can upgrade his kitchen and/or knife

the one major flaw in the game is its side quests. they feel very much like playing WoW or something, and mostly amounts to busywork and well i feel the same amount of characterization could have been implemented without all that and also doing them made the game too easy. having access to all the phoenix weapons / the phoenix spear even at level 1 just breaks the game right in half. even the upgraded two handed beast sword with its 620 attack doesn't compare to the 490 attack power phoenix spear. plus the +50% magic power while equipped. why use anything else. that weapon oversight is a minor flaw.

i mean, having said that though, i can't heap enough praise on the writing this game has got. it's clear that the writers cared for their creations and it shows. the massive foreboding that looms throughout the game, the elephant in the room that no one addresses which happens to be named yonah's illness or disappearance as the case may be. kaine's willingness to approach and befriend the characters in the story while keeping them at arm's length at once. grimoire weiss being uppity and snobbish and constantly butting heads with nier's dumb as rocks approach to things. the grudging acceptance of each others' quiddity and the characters each supporting one another in desperate times. it might not be the ideal game design-wise but god damn if the scenarios in the game aren't incredibly varied and interesting.

Skip the kitchen, but the knife quest is pretty good. But I agree with you on the protagonists. Nier, Weiss, Kaine and Emil are all so well characterized.

Thanks for readdressing the topic appropriately Isfet. :'(

Just discovered a boar-riding minigame where you have to mow down as many sheep as possible in a given time limit, and are awarded 100 gold per sheep. This game just got even better.

I am playing Gestalt for the 360. I'm kind of jealous of the PS3 for its unique status messages, but it's not like I could see my own anyway.

What's the difference between the PS3 status messages and the 360's?

Yeah, 360 has status messages, though they aren't very easy to see. No idea if Nier kept them all the same, though.

Well the 360 ones are pretty good. I thought they had been discussed in the thread - "dreamdreamdreamdream" and etc. Maybe I just missed a PS3 mention.

Both US PS3 and 360 versions of the game are identical. They both have the same status messages too, far as I can tell.

The reason why the PS3 version's status messages keep getting mentioned is that actually giving status updates on the "what are your bros playing?" list is unusual on PSN, whereas on Live basically every single game does it.

Here is a strange thing I cannot find a reason for: NieR Gestalt is set in 3361, while NieR Replicant is set in 3465. Considering Nier's story, this is pretty much impossible. What was the point of separating them by a hundred years?

So I finally started this game two weeks ago and am sad to see how SQEX managed to release yet another remarkable game but will focus on their next FFXXXXIIIIXIXIIIXXVVIIICCXXDMCMXXII anyway.

and re: sad -
I've had my fair share of videogame-drama-moments and am rather amused or bored if a "boohoo"-chara turns up in a game and tells me how bad and lonely his life has been. Have been there before, nothing to see here *yawn*
And thus I was rather surprised by that scene where Eric remembers his past, sister and gets a new "outfit". This scene did capture everything that, say, FF13 was missing, in one short moment:

it didn't have the usual "see? this is DRAMA, player, and since we play the FITTING, j-pop 'oh no, DRAMA'-bgm right now, we want you to be sad when lightening hits snow and blows vanilla away"-setup, but rather relied on the characters and, may I say that, something that resembles …… "heart"? emotions?
That scene, especially the reaction of the hero, actually managed to touch something inside me, a thing that rarely happens, since I've seen enough cheap vgame *drama*-scenes before.

Very surprised I was, indeed.

SQEX only published this because they wanted to have a Kingdom Hearts type game for an older demographic. Considering Drakengard's colossal weight, Cavia was the perfect developer for that purpose.

Did anybody play Last Story? I think some Cavia people worked on it after getting absorbed by AQ Interactive.

Last Story (and Pandora's Tower (and Xenoblade)) is getting a EU release in 2012, so I guess I will get to finally play it (them) then.

My favorite part of the Nier soundtrack: the deep breath the child chorus takes before launching into "Snow in Summer", the first track on the album. It does a great job of delivering the feeling of the last, dying breath of humanity.

SB Wiki wrote:
The Japanese version is known as NieR Gestalt on the 360, and NieR Replicant on the PS3. Gestalt stars a father protecting his daughter, while Replicant is about a brother doing the same for his sister. The games are identical otherwise. Gestalt is the version that the West got on both platforms.

The DLC is the only way to play as young NieR from Replicant in the Western versions.
