I got the upgrade achievement in Nier and didn't even mind, the junkyard music was that soothing. _________________

Twenty hours in four days. I beat this thing (well, I saw ending A.)
It's definitely to Zelda what Deadly Premonition is to Shenmue. And by that I mean it's excellent.
(endgame spoilers) I suppose the reveal that all the Shades are "twisted copies" of humans parallels Drakengard's armies of child soldiers, who you'd been slaughtering the whole time without a care.
Is there a different final boss for some of the endings? The Gamefaqs listing isn't very clear. |

| Huh. Don't think I'm willing to grind for all the weapons, so I'll just Youtube 'em. |

You don't have to max out the weapons to get the C&D endings, just have them. None of the weapons are hard tO find. _________________

| Are there any weapons hidden in out-of-the-way places that require heavy backtracking? Because I could deal with farming enough stuff to sell for the shop weapons. |

A couple just require you to finish quests - nothing too bad - and a few you'll find in boxes and stuff as you complete your second loop. _________________

Yeah, this. And personally, I think D is more effective if you actually go for it, but... _________________

A second playthrough really is important to the game. After that you will know what you are doing and will be very strong, so a 3rd and 4th playthrough are very quick and easy. I managed to speed through to endings C and D on the same day as my second play through, so I saved some time while still having a serious playthrough in my recent memory, which helped with ending C/D's affect.
Did anybody happen to name their character Cavia when they played, and proceed all the way to ending D? That would be an oddly fitting end to the game. |

Yeah, all of the weapons are really simple to get- you can look online for a guide if you like. You should find all but maybe three of them just going through the game normally, and the weapons you have are carried over between play throughs.
Also, if you don't play through at least the second loop you miss out on a whole lot. _________________

No, seriously, the second loop takes a quarter as long as the first one because you start from the halfway point and you keep all of your experience and weapons. It's pretty easy to breeze through and you should do it while the game is still fresh in your mind. _________________

| Yeah also you don't have to collect shit during the B loop, just cut dudes up. Only D requires you to get all the weapons. I hated doing my C/D run because I was missing like 13 weapons and ended up spending three hours beating up robots in the scrapyard zone but the B loop is one of the best things in the game because there's actually new stuff happening. |

I don't know why you were beating up robots in the scrapyard, unless you really wanted to max them out for some arbitrary reason. All you need is to own all the weapons to see C/D, and that's not particularly hard at all.
Also, it's worth noting that, on any playthrough, you can fight the various part 2 bosses in mostly any order you want by taking advantage of the various prompts, or checking your mail, or what have you. It doesn't make a huge difference, but it's a nice touch. _________________

Needed three Machine Oils for the one treasure map sidequest you have to do to get a weapon. I had zero and it's a fairly rare drop from the little flying robots. Also fuck farming anything ever just on general principle. |

Oh, I'd forgotten about that one. I likely already had a few of the oils, then; I think the only grinding I did was for the Phoenix Spear -- and I still didn't max it out, I don't hate myself that much. _________________

Machine Oil is a pretty common drop from the giant robots on the second basement floor. Get loaded up in just one or two trips. _________________

that was the only weapon I maxed! I don't remember it being very hard? maybe that egg or whatever is rare, but I got mine pretty quick. _________________

I think this is the best way to go about the New Game+ replays, but it's ironic given that (1) having the story fresh in mind makes endings B, C, and D make most sense while (2) fighting the same battles with increasingly compounded experience and upgrades makes the replays more of a lengthy gesture rather than the kind of challenge that would make a replay genuinely fun.
I'm frustrated at the collectathon requirements for the C and D endings. I didn't see the acquisition of those weapons as thematically or narratively related to those endings, so the story felt disconnected from the means needed to get there. That actually underscores one of my bigger frustrations with Nier: it seems to make intermittent gestures to do something interesting as a jRPG without fully committing to that mindset. On one level, getting the last two endings is purely an exercise in genre conventions: you need to prove that you are actually playing this as a jRPG by collecting every useless item in order to see the last endings.
The fact that this collecting is (relatively) painless doesn't mitigate the fact that I would like for it to have been better implemented. _________________

| Do you absolutely have to beat the entire DLC episode in one go? The second door was gone after exiting and reentering the place. |

| I'd say the DLC is a pretty good booster for you to get the last few endings. The costumes you unlock are pretty fun to play through the game with (they keep them on in the non-prerendered cutscenes) and the high the difficulty of the fights by the end of it make for a pretty nice change of pace from how ridiculously easy the game gets after one or two loops. Getting it around half-way though the second loop and then playing it until you die a couple of times throughout the rest of the game's loops worked out pretty well for me. |

Finally got around to achieving the B ending.
I had suspected that every mission after the time jump was nothing more than a tragic exercise in futility, but damn, it sure made that painfully clear.
Do the DLC weapons count towards the total needed to access the C/D endings? |

had the worst experience with this this weekend. Saturday night i got to the Darklord's Castle. get to the very final bit of the very final boss. i've got a sliver of health and its 8:30pm. try a few times to get through the bullet hell, realize I'm not going to do it with no food and i need to leave anyway. so i quit, and realize that the last save point was about 3 hours ago.
powered through it the next morning but it still left a bad taste in my mouth. liked it, though... gonna try for the B ending. wish you could play as Kaine. seems like a lot of the game was cut because they ran out of money _________________ Someday somethings coming

Apparently, the E ending (part of the cut content) had you playing as Kaine. There've been some rumblings about a sequel despite all evidence to the contrary, and if this happens I would not be surprised to see her as the protagonist. _________________

it feels like that's what the game wants you to do with the B path _________________ Someday somethings coming

Whoever on SB was playing Nier on PS3 yesterday had a really funny one that's not on that list, but I can't remember what it was. _________________

| Supposedly there's one that goes something like "Some dude's been sending letters to my 10 year old daughter, I'm not too happy about that." I'm surprised The Internet doesn't have a comprehensive listing of these anywhere yet. |

Because it would require 2 consoles? One dude just sitting there waiting for the status to be updated and another 100% the game.
That's more involvement than 99% of game related projects. _________________ My Hawt Blog Vita Games
