I'm quite sweet on Harley throughout TAS.
Anyway, I've gone off on this before, but I fucking love Batman Begins. The prominence and depth of the film's themes separated it immediately from any other superhero movie, and the ideas of Bruce's fear and guilt tangibly wrapped around each other to produce a believable and compelling origin story that stayed true to the psychology and despair of Batman in TAS (See "I Am the Night" for a good example). Furthermore, the distinctive style of the score paints all of this in such an intense mood. It all came together in one of the most cohesive and powerful movies I've seen in some time.
I don't know much of anything about the next one. However, it's my understanding that the same writer and director are behind it, so suffice it to say that I have high expectations after Begins.
I do wish they'd drop "Batman" from the title and let it stand as The Dark Knight. That'd be sweet. |

I was reading the wikipedia article on the film and I have two notes: According to Nolan back in '06, the title actually will be The Dark Knight. He explains why he thinks it works since this is his reenvisioning of the film franchise, and the article author mentions that this will be the first live-action Batman film without the Batman name in the title.
Secondly, there is much preliminary emphasis on the Joker's eyes, downplaying his mouth. It's all about his burning, hateful eyes. Just judging from the spirit of Begins, I am sure that they will take the Joker in a very new direction.
I'm a little unnerved by the fact that they will be replacing Katie Holmes for the Rachel Dawes character. Isn't that going to feel odd for someone in the future (me) watching the whole trilogy? And I like Maggie Gyllenhal a lot, don't get me wrong, and I understand that Holmes left them no choice. I'm just worried about consistency.
I wonder about the thematic quality for this upcoming movie. It's supposedly about "escalation", things getting worse before they get better, and that doesn't sound as... definite as the first movie's themes.
No mention of Harley that I saw. =( |

Bale is the fourth Bruce Wayne in five movies. Fifth, if you count Mask of the Phantasm. Which you should!!
Meh, Katie. Kate. Whatever. |
Dude. That's completely different. You have to look at Batman Begins onward as it's own thing. I mean consistency within this new young series.
And I certainly fucking do count Mask of the Phantasm! Best Batman film before Begins!
I think Nicholson was an awful Joker -- and I'm a huge fan of him in general. Mark Hamil is the best, but I can see Ledger working out in an interesting new way. |
