If, say, I had a gimmick account called "JamesE" that somehow got banned, I would post something like this in this thread:
| JamesE wrote: |
Alien Soldier and Yuu Yuu Hakusho share the same kind of weird alien synth vibes care of Treasure. Yuu Yuu is the title not many people have played out of the Mega Drive/Treasure canon so I think a few people will find it pretty fresh and cool.
"Stand Up To Myself", the closing theme to Thunderforce IV, is probably one of the most rocking tracks ever commited to Ym2612. I've heard arranges and it's shit played with real instruments. The whole Thunder Force IV theme is really cool and pumping [though] I have an especial fondness for "Metal Squad", the Bio-Base theme. Galbadia Hotel has the hookups under Technosoft Game Music Collection Vol. 5 - Thunder Force IV. Great times.
Essential Sonic music: All of Sonic 1, esp. Spring Yard and Star Light, Chemical Plant, the 2p Mystic Caves music and Metropolis Zone. Death Egg is probably one of the scariest themes in an all ages game, [though] due to the average length of time most people let it play it's become a kind of Mega Drive "Rave On". All of Sonic 3 and Knuckles is great, especially the Chrome Gadget music.
Phantasy Star IV has an amazing opening theme and good music throughout. So check that too.

Casino Night 2 player - best Sonic track ever (if far too short). |

Ranger X - I like listening to that haunting "mission objective" music. it works even better in the context of the game actually, where I dare say the mission briefing computer could be mistaken for a sci-fi movie.
and rest of the soundtrack doesn't slouch either, the opening stage is fantastic in particular. _________________

Hopefully not embarassing myself too bad here (and hoping no one mentioned them before me) I'd suggest both Alisia Dragoon and Gain Ground make good use of the Genesis' sound chip.
Also, if it's not too much of a heresy, I'd suggest that Strider's soundtrack worked to much greater effect on the Genesis than it did in the arcade. I don't know how it works out exactly, but it's a little quieter and moodier than I found the arcade music to be, being made as it was in the late-80's "everything must be loud and boisterous" era of Capcom arcade games. _________________ -LS

No, I'd agree on Strider. Same with Ghouls 'N Ghosts, actually. Maybe. I'll have to directly compare sometime when I feel like it. Perhaps I'm just more familiar with it, is all.
Also, though again not a Yuzo Koshiro deal (odd that he's so associated with Shinobi, despite only having done the one game... plus the Game Gear ones that nobody played anyway), Shadow Dancer's soundtrack is pretty hep. It's got voice samples, which makes it 1990-awesome!
Decapattack has some neat stuff going on as well. |

Well, you have to remember that many of the Capcom games that appeared on the MD and MCD were actually ported over by Sega themselves. Strider definitely falls into that category, Sega reprogrammed everything. They even added some additional music in certain portions of the game that wasn't there in the arcade. So I would say that the change in mood was a decision by Sega since it would make better use of the soundchip. |

Makes sense (and damn, I hate I forgot Ghouls and Ghosts, but thankfully someone else caught it) It's just intriguing to me that a slight tweak of the music to sound better on the hardware worked more in the games' benefit, in my opinion anyways, than the arranged soundtrack they used for the Duo port.
It's not often ports are "optimised" (may not be the right term but let's roll with it) to that great an effect.
EDIT: Oh yeah, I dunno how this one will fly but Mystic Defender has some pretty good atmospheric music, especially for a early-generation Genesis game (the game's not super-great, but hey) _________________ -LS

I'm rather partial to Gleylancer's soundtrack. The stage 1 theme and its accompanying boss theme are particularly pleasant to blow stuff up to.
"Stick to it, and believe in your power!" Indeed. |

So just now I was playing Golden Axe 3 on my PSP and
this is a pretty good song!
Let's use this thread again to talk about Mega Drive music? I know that some of you guys are particularly fond of this sound chip, as I am. And nowadays there's a lot more youtube music videos to populate the thread than in 2007, for those who don't wanna meddle with players and plugins.
Speaking of them, is there a .vgm player/plugin for android? |

I bought a 1989 Model 1 Genesis specifically for the better sound chip.

There's a plugin for foobar2000 that plays vgm's along with a few other game console related formats:
http://kode54.foobar2000.org/?v
You can also record to standard audio files for playing back on a portable player.
Motoi Sakuraba's hand clappy genesis works set the mood in game pretty well, but its a stretch to call the stuff listenable out of context. See El Viento and Granada
EDIT: Also, what's up with Yuzo/Ancient making an indie game on Xbox? |

Minarae, the XBLIG game is called Mamotte Knight/Protect Me! Knight.

Nitpicking: it's both a prequel and a sequel. And the sprites are not ugly at all--most are gorgeously and fluidly hand-drawn, and the few prerendered sprites don't look one bit out of place.

That bassline! Those meaty thuds whenever a bullet hits! The way the SFX eat into the BGM make it seem like you're actually fighting the soundtrack and killing lots of shit is drowning out its oppressive drone. Unintentional adaptive BGM. |

I love MWIV's soundtrack, as it does a particularly good job of remixing and arranging the main melody into fitting the mood of the stage. In fact, it's probably one of the best examples of such an approach to BGMs. _________________

I know my post is pretty light on content besides a link to another forum's thread but I just introduced myself to that game and had my mind blown enough by it to look up some stuff. These guys eventually narrowed it down to (probably?) Kenichiro and/or Shigeharu Isoda. |

| Chaotix has a cool detailed sound test that breaks down which FM/PSG channels are playing which notes of the track. I've only seen this done on the later PS2 Sega Ages volumes. |
