This is the proper way to play Dragon Quest Nine. My goal is to max out my main character's style score. I don't even know if that stat really does anything.
I dress everyone else to look good for their role. except for that slime armor i just made. that is so stupid looking i had to put it on my thief. _________________

Those are just alchemy components, not proper loot (mini medals, gold, weapons, etc). |

Are you saying that all of the Party Talk text is available in English on the Japanese ROM for DQ4? I had resigned myself to playing half a game along with the rest of the western world, but... |

I'm playing this! I now have an acrobatics-focused Minstrel (soon to be spear-wielding Warrior), a whip-using Mage, a wand-using Priest (who will swap to Sage once faith is maxed), and a rod-using Martial Artist. Their names are Tavros, Aradia, Vriska, and Terezi. (They actually like to role-play, after all....) _________________ JSNLV is frequently and intentionally wrong. |

Was multiplayering this yesterday! Was underleveled compared to secondpillow so he sent his guy into my world wearing a suit jacket and slime helmet with no pants. We sliced our way through a dungeon, restoring peace to some place.
I have to say! As soon as the multiplayer was turned on it felt like playing a Dragon Quest MMO. Which I guess is to be expected! Except since we were in the same room I was able to pour him a diet chocolate fudge soda (real thing I bought and did not make up) and bake up some beans. When viewed through the lenses of MMO glasses this game is pretty phenomenal. Each town has 1 or 2 quests, all with cutscenes. Alright!
Also I put my DS to sleep for like 30 minutes but he stayed in my world (maybe it didn't sleep, but that was still neat). _________________

bought this yesterday and played it for about 5 hours staight until 3am.
i umm...yea, i like it. it's perhaps not amazing at this point, but it's certainly Dragon Quest-y and charming.
i'm really sad that the multiplayer is local only. and i'm also sad that there seems to be no progress made on some kind of DS tunneler or something as i'd really love to try playing this with someone.
the only person i know who has this (SB's favorite female game journo) is too busy playing Persona 3 Portable at the moment. |

update: i do not have to go to jury duty. i will now dragon quest myself into sweet oblivion. it is weird how the series that is the MOST "jrpg" is also the most tolerable jrpg. Making every piece of armor and equipment visible on your dudes is the best thing since numbers-go-up. _________________ The text will not live forever. The cup are small |

the game stopped being an action RPG not too long after it was announced and people went nuts (in the bad way).
just beat the boss after reaching Alltrades Abbey. so i'm sure i'll find out when i turn the DS on again, but how does switching vocations work in this game? do you keep prior skills etc., or is it like starting from square 1? if the latter, what's the purpose? |

Class skills and bonuses transfer to every other class. Not sure if you can use weapon skills with other types of weapons. But if you switch to another class that can use that same weapon you can still use them or if you put 100 pts into a weapon skill you can use that weapon type with any other class. Spells arent transferred between classes. _________________

It does seem extremely easy. I am considering playing it with just a party of two. |

If you "master" a weapon(max it out w/ 100 skill points) then any class the character switches to can use it. Also applies to shields. _________________ 3DS Friendcode: 2337-3480-4823

Two reasons to use Fisticuffs:
1. The game is easy.
2. When has punching (in a game) not been awesome? |

It seems to me that the whole point of DQ games, like Wizardry games, is that you play them when you want an ultra-conservative, by the book medieval fantasy experience. You know, when you might otherwise play Nethack or the Bard's Tale. In any of these games, there need to be slimes, dragons, arrows, chests, chainmail and a grassy English-looking landscape, or you wind up feeling robbed.
I started playing it today but it occurred to me I was not in a nostalgic enough mood and so I switched it off to save for later. When I come back to it, I think I'll break a lifelong aversion and have a bard as my main character. |

Your main character starts out as a Minstrel (and the job switching system doesn't open up until around the ten hour mark), so you're in luck! The decision's been made for you!
Too bad the game doesn't actually have harps :( |

More so than Eric Lecarde in Castlevania: Bloodlines?
Also, I'm grinding each character to at least Level 30 in all classes to get maximum ability / stat up benefits.
You have a ridiculous advantage the next time you start at Level 1 if you've mastered a weapon. You can get to where you were in the other job in less than half the time! |

Yeah you need those stat benefits for the post-game stuff if you can be bothered.
Was kinda disappointed sage is just a really good healer with a couple of buff/nuke spells instead of the dq3 every spell in the game sage. |

been playin' for about 10 hours now, really digging this game. early on the idea popped into my head that i want to dress my main character up to look exactly like the main character of dragon quest viii...has anyone done this or know if it's possible? i feel like that's the kind of easter egg that would be in this game.
you guys have inspired me to change one of my characters to a weaponless monk...booya! _________________
