So so very true! it feels like 8 for the DS. So many stock villages, villagers, dungeons. It feels like this is the same place I've been to so many times vefore. Can they at least have some imagination? Houses on top of giant crabs or something?

go play an smt game then. Smt strange journey...???

Actually yeah I didn't play it much either. I guess I don't like the etrian oddysey style 3d dungeons. I like devil survivor though although I wouldve enjoyed it more if it had kazuma kaneko or soejima character art.

I wanted this, but I looked at footage of it and it seemed so static and lifeless. Pedestrian as dragon quest's design is, it at least seems to live and breathe. Maybe level 5 should be making SMT games.

What? When did people suddenly start disliking SMT: Strange Journey? And do we have some people here who hate Etrian Odyssey's dungeons?!

THERE IS NO DEITY!

I gave etrian odyssey an honest, long try. The lifeless, non-animated world eventually lost my attention. The enemies need at least basic animation. Why grind for hours and hours if I'm basically looking at static images? It's an approach that loses the power of imagination that you get from pen and paper rpg's while neglecting the moving image potential of the vidcon.

Should I be getting panic attacks over how to allocate my skill points? What's the deal with the fan? Can I just build my character however I want and still have the game be manageable? I need reassurance to enjoy this game.

The boomerang has always been my favorite weapon, so I'm saving my points for it until the skill tree opens up. I put a few points into fan so I could get an attack boost of some kind in the meantime.

Just relax. Buy some weapons and see which ones you like the most.

according to an faq, you're likely to have less than 400 skill points before the end boss

I looked at one because I wanted to make sure that boomerangs were in the game, so I would know to save my points for them. I'm approaching the game as a dungeon crawler, because really, am I supposed to actually care about this story?

Doesn't mean you have to approach it like you're min/maxing for an mmorpg.

Some months back, I designed a really cool little 20 page freebee guidebook for this called 'Starting Your Dragon Quest Adventure' along with a little standee for it.

If you guys see it out in the wild, take a picture of it for me!

Oh wow, awesome! Glad you guys saw it/like it.

It's actually a really nice little book for beginners. I worked really hard to try to capture the whimsical nature of the game, too. Hopefully it comes across.

Did the spot varnish on the logo and the two slimes on the front come out nicely?

Hey I picked up one of those booklets to give to my wife, as this will be her first Dragon Quest. Varnish definitely turned up, although it's a little blocky on the littler slimes. Still nice job MAN. The card stock is extremely good (you can ask secondpillow, I literally said that outloud in the store when we spotted these a week-ish ago).

Awesome skelethulu. Thanks for the pictures! Also cool to hear it'll be useful to your wife!

I don't have one yet, so it's good to know that the stock is really nice and stuff.

I've got a booklet too. Yeah, it's nice.

I'm excited, picking this up tomorrow. Will probably have a gushy orgasm in this thread and will not be bothered at all by the sameness of this game.

This game is kind of starting to have a story!

Look at each town and its accompanying dungeon as a chapter in a book. The first two chapters were written by the author falling asleep with his head on the keyboard, and having his editor come along and add some periods to it. But the third chapter is when the author woke up and banged out something respectable.

L/R buttons NOT NEEDED for entry to this club.

How much does it use the touch screen? Can you play the game with one hand.

You can play the game entirely with the touch screen, entirely with buttons, or a combination.

I'm not sure how much more of an incentive to "grind for hours and hours" there is in animated sprites.

Because when I'm playing a game, my eyeballs are pleased when the fake world they're looking at moves in a dynamic fashion.

secondpillow, plenty of people didn't mind looking at static monster pictures in the 8-bit and 16-bit Final Fantasy games. You may even be one of them. Some other RPGs probably also had them.

I didn't find the environments in Etrian Odyssey to be lifeless, despite not being animated. They had a lot of charm.

Did anyone do this? Am I somehow harming my ability to enjoy the game by seeing if I will somehow make my characters all unplayable before I know the impact of my decisions?

Thoughts within the first 20 minutes:

-No way to speed up text? Booooooooooo!
-There really ought to be a compromise with the graphical battle system. It wouldn't kill them to add a menu option that turns long battle animations off. It seems that DQ has permanently moved in a flashier direction, and I'm still not very happy with it.
-This game is pretty. By zooming out and lowering the attempted detail a smidge, it eliminates most of the pixelation that plagued DQM:J. I have yet to see how most of the world really looks.
-The Celestrians talk like stupid people think smart people talk. "The humans can't see we Celestrians," and us Celestrians can't speak English good, can us?
-I have a profile? And I can wave to people? I'm not sure if all this makes me happy or sad that I'll never find anyone to play it with.

I share all these thoughts. At least the loading times are short.

It feels strange for a JRPG to let me define the way a character looks and to have equipment alter their appearance.

My greatest concern has been the elimination of exploration (Unless I am allowed to find secret places later in the game.)

What pisses me off is the massive, *massive* framerate drop when you have a complete party. The game is smooth as butter with just the main character running around, and there's no option to disable the cronies. :(

Huh? I haven't had that experience. The game plays just as smoothly for me whether I have 4 people or 1 person in my party.

What really? I'm playing on an old DS lite, and I too suffer from the framerate drop. It was painfully noticeable the first time I left the inn with all 4 party members.

Now is when I make a series of subtle gestures indicating forum users may wish to compare the non-licensed hardware they may be using as an interpretive measure.

(although there's also the remote possibility that it's a DSi matter?)

edit: WISH

edit 2: SERIES

DS Lite with an R4. There is slowdown but it's usually when there are several monsters + party on screen.
