I wonder how long before it gets pirated. Of the five or so people I know who wanted to play this, all but one of them is going "I'm waiting for the ROM". I guess I'd be more annoyed about it but eh, Nintendo.

That explains it. The game is $20 today at Toys R Us and when I got there at 4 assuming they'd be sold out they had sold 1 copy out of 12. It seems no matter what anyone does this series just won't sell in America.

Pretty much. Anyone of sufficient nerdery to even be aware of it, let alone want it, also presumably has an R4 at this point. Not a great combination to see a game sell.

Toys R Us, or at least the one near here, is also carrying Dragon Quest 5 for about $20. This is a really good deal! The game only had a limited release in America and so the price never dropped from $40 at places like Gamestop.

ROM came out the night before it hit the shelves and I have it.

The cracktro is a bit annoying, though. I might get a different one but naaaaaaaah.

hey motherfuckers THIS IS DRAGON QUEST NIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! with like a ton of capital letters and exclamation points!

I bought it on amazon using their "pre-order stuff and get game coupons" system. UNFORTUNATELY it won't be here until tomorrow. I went to Walmart last night at midnight to buy a copy (intending to later return my amazon copy) AND THEY WERE LIKE WHAT THE SHIT THAT ISN'T HERE. So I went to gamestop this morning to buy a copy (that I will return tomorrow during my lunch break). THAT'S RIGHT YA'LL I am willing to go to walmart or gamestop TWICE for this game. The gamestop shitass was like "what is that for, the PS3?" so clearly they'd been dishing out copies all morning.

I played the Japanese version through so it's not like I'm getting much new out of it but I like the jobs and stuff more than my real job so I'll stick with it. Also this will be my wife's first Dragon Quest and I guarantee she will love it like she loves wine.

Is there some kinda system where we can play ad-hoc online through a router or something like the PSP has?

Also I totally want to jump on this but I have so many other games to play through. Urghh, someone take pics of their game so I can play vicariously through yoooou.

Yeah, I want to know that too. Duh, Square Enix. Maybe not for Japan, but definitly for the US and Europa, an Online Mode would have been a great idea...

Friday actually. Quite a few big name releases tend to get dumped and cracked before the games are even released.

So far, the game is probably one of the prettiest things I've seen on the DS.

Played a little bit of the japanese version, but not really much. I didn't get the part where you can create your own party. I know that these guys (or girls) are just non-talking companions. You can create them by yourself, or choose already by the developer created ones. But they all start at Level 1. At this point, I was like, uh, Level 7 or 8? Maybe 10? I really don't know it anymore, to be honest. And I think you really need a 4 man party, when you play the game alone, right?

Looking forward to finally play a version which I fully understand. Still have to wait some more days, though.

I can't believe there's this much hate due to the omission of an online multiplayer mode.

Guys, God Hand didn't have multiplayer did it?

This is DRAGON QUEST NINE, people. This is a BIG THING.

I'm excited for when I can get myself off the internet to actually play it :P

I don't understand what you mean.

Are you saying people are voting with their wallets against the design of multiplayer being local only? Because that's kind of a ridiculous assertion.

I think he's suggesting that online would force people to buy an actual copy of the game, but what Cuba doesn't realize is that you can play pirated DS games online without repercussion. Or at least, that's the way it's always been in the past. Dunno about now.

Local Toys R Us sold out of all their copies. Take that, anecdotal evidence.

I was gonna say... I really hope it hasn't come to the point where even Dragon Quest needs online multiplayer to be considered worthwhile.

I'm saying that if you had to connect to a central server for online play Enix could force people to buy the game by verifying it (if they wanted to play online). But Deets says the DS doesn't do that for online games so.

I've only played maybe an hour but I wouldn't describe it as hard? What I am noticing is the glaring differences in the setting from the basic dragon quest setting.

The most obvious one is the churches are in worship of the almighty rather than the goddess.

As of 10 hours or something it's pretty standard DQ in difficulty. I wouldn't say it's multiplayer focused, just that multiplayer is there and not an afterthought.

I'd buy it if they released it for XBox360 or Wii.
In fact I really feel like playing a round based RPG that I haven't played yet. But I think I'd be better off with the older Dragon Quests anyway.

I'm actually going to talk about THE GAME.

The beginning stretch of this game is very railroady. You're an angel who's supposed to do good deeds, which translates to being forced to pick up horse shit off of the floor to proceed. I resent being expected to care about the minor problems of a world full of retards, especially when it involves shit. I'm in the middle of playing planescape, so it's jarring to play a game where you MUST be the sort of dude who will pick up shit with your hands, rather than having a choice. Do the developers think it so important that I pick up that shit? Is it supposed to teach me a lesson about life? Or is it just their way of laughing at us?

I think these games are pretty piss-poor about giving true roleplaying experiences. For example, I want to roleplay the experience of crushing that paris hilton fairy's skull between two rocks and writing FAIRIES GO HOME in fairy blood on the town square, but since she lives in the user interface I'll probably be denied that quest.

Also, I think they need to fire koichi sugiyama. This music is like a stale box of crackers from your grandma's house.

OVERALL: I like it so far. I just want to murder the fairy.

I like the game. I can't wait to connect to a friend's world and steal his treasure. I'm PUMPED about the time that will come where I can have a boomerang. I'm just disappointed (not in a surprised kind of way) at the game's lack of creativity.

DQ represents a kind of game. It's the slow and methodical adventure. If Joseph Campbell talked about DQ he'd say how each game was just a retelling of the last. Maybe for another generation.

I haven't played this one yet.

Ironically I'm waiting for a ROM to be released on the 'net. I really want to play this game multiplayer. I think that the local multiplayer highlights DQ's strengths in a way that most DQ players never noticed. But there's no way I'm buying a 2 copies and a 2nd DS just for multiplayer. ROMs with friends' unused DSes... yeah. That's what I'm looking for.

Maybe so! But it certainly has ambition and ideas.

gooktime wrote:

Earthbound is Dragon Quest with heart.

I was thinking on the way to work it seems strange that Nintendo chose to release Dragon Quest IX themselves but they weren't willing to release Mother 3. From what I've played so far I would much rather be playing that. Not that DQIX is bad, it just sort of feels like another DQ Remake rather than the most recent game in a long-running series.

So so very true! it feels like 8 for the DS. So many stock villages, villagers, dungeons. It feels like this is the same place I've been to so many times vefore. Can they at least have some imagination? Houses on top of giant crabs or something?
