That explains it. The game is $20 today at Toys R Us and when I got there at 4 assuming they'd be sold out they had sold 1 copy out of 12. It seems no matter what anyone does this series just won't sell in America.

Yeah, if you were looking for something different than standard jRPG bullshit probably shouldn't have bought Dragon Quest.

Maybe so! But it certainly has ambition and ideas.

Earthbound is Dragon Quest with heart.
I was thinking on the way to work it seems strange that Nintendo chose to release Dragon Quest IX themselves but they weren't willing to release Mother 3. From what I've played so far I would much rather be playing that. Not that DQIX is bad, it just sort of feels like another DQ Remake rather than the most recent game in a long-running series.

You can play the game entirely with the touch screen, entirely with buttons, or a combination.

The biggest improvement by far is the ability to see and avoid monsters on the overworld. I didn't think it would be a big deal, but removing the frustration of running into an endless stream of enemies while you're exploring for treasure chests really encourages you to actually explore. There's almost never anything to be found in all of the little nooks and crannies at the edges of the map, but I don't mind looking since it doesn't mean I'm going to get into a battle every three steps.
