And don't forget the alarm that goes off, as well as the memorable 'escape' music, composed by the legend himself, Hip Tanaka.

I replayed the original yesterday! It's a lot more fun when you use missiles! _________________

| I made maps for the whole game (except Tourian) so I can later do a speedrun of sorts. There was this part in Ridley's lair where you have to find a tiny bombable block in order to cross a wall, and I couldn't figure it out until I found it in a FAQ. So that part I couldn't just chart by myself, and in addition to that there were two energy containers hidden in regular places that I never found, either. In all I think that there were four items that I missed, probably five but no more. Then I beat the game and got a helmet-less Samus, woo. It was fun. |

| i hereby put forth that metroid 1 & 2 and quite possibly super metroid but certainly the first two are fucking landmark games in terms of video game music. if anyone cares about the concept of 'vgm' anyhow. |

I wouldn't count Super Metroid's, simply because it doesn't innovate, though it's still a sweet soundtrack. Otherwise, I totally agree. |

Since the second wave of gamers (i.e. Kids who first picked up games in the Playstation Era) consider that generation to be the benchmark of progress (see: FFVII fanboys). Now they are in their 20's and buying back all their junk on ebay as the stink of nostalgia is now settling in.
Yes. Anything before that and the colors of 16-bit is now considered old. Much too old to even be old school. 16-bit gets away with not being considered old for a few more years. I may want to thank Nintendo's VC for that. _________________

i'm not so sure about that... sort of hinges on the semantics of "landmark" though. doesn't that word have a connotation of being highly influential? i haven't seen many games that even tried to do what metroid 1 and 2 did...
but landmark as in "salient thing towering high above pretty much everything else", yeah, totally.
also, humbly plugging my own erratic metroid remix itt. |

The original Metroid was released in 1986. Twenty-one years is pretty damn old.
Metroid 2 was released in 1991, so it's at least a little newer. Fifteen years is still pretty old, though.
So yeah, they're old. Old does not mean bad, though.
EDIT: The Sega Mega Drive was launched in 1988 and is widely considered the first really popular 16-bit system, so I don't think 16-bit gets away with being "newer" either, considering next year will be the Mega Drive's 20th birthday. I personally consider "newer" systems to be N64 and beyond (yes, PS1 is old to me).
But, you know, my first system was the NES, so the N64 was a big deal to me when I first heard about it (oddly I knew nothing about the PS1), as I imagine it was when most of you folks were introduced to it. _________________

I wouldn't say so, but I guess its just a matter of perspective. Being 27, I have difficulty thinking of anything that was created during my lifetime as old.
I understand the argument about the pace of technological progress and all, but it still seems excessive.

I agree; also, I hadn't thought you meant this. I just don't think that the medium's been around long enough to have anything old in it. _________________

Well, that's understandable. I'm only a teenager, so Metroid was "before my time". _________________
