It's been a while, but I believe there is a way to get to Tourian with only beating one of the two bosses through glitchy techniques.

Also, for what it is worth, the original Metroid is a game that doesn't hold up for me, so if you aren't enjoying it I say move on the Metroid 2, which is still enjoyable to this day.
