I do find this pretty interesting. In silver/gold I found that it was totally possible for a Zerg or Toss player to go 6ling or tech for cannons and still have the chance of winning. What really got me into Starcraft II was when I figured out how to scout (and sometimes not scout properly :() these situations and turn 6ling/cannoning into an advantage for me. |
Reaper rushes aren't in this category though. In the post-nerf world, reaper rushes are 100% ineffective I've found, any normal Silver-level player can easily repel them and then walk over to crush you. They don't even qualify as a cheese anymore. The changes made it go from (presumably) an almost undefeatable rush to making reapers pretty much a useless unit (you can just build a Viking or whatever if you want to scout). |

I just watch Husky mostly. I know he's not the most "analytical" but the games are the same. I haven't seen a 6pool or a cannon rush in I dunno how long. _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |

In a strange twist it was the first rts that Booj and I got familiar enough with to enjoy, but the rest of our friends (who previously always wanted to play warcraft and starcraft) never really got hooked. It's been gathering dust and I've completely forgotten how to play it. _________________ I can no longer shop happily. |

My brother was the one who got me into the original way long ago, but he hasn't had a good enough computer to run this one until just now. I haven't really played the game much since getting owned in my first few matches of Diamond, even though I've always wanted to play more. I bought him a copy of SC2 hoping that I could relearn the game with him. If you're interested in playing some more and getting back into it, I'm down. Heart of the Swarm can't be too far away. _________________ interdimensional |

Checking in here to say hi haters : http://i.imgur.com/SFG1S.jpg
USA is such EZ mode. I play on KOR servers now, but haven't played in some time... for some reason SCII just never felt as 'tight' as SC1 and the looseness in unit control / macro plus me getting older has just resulted in me not being as addicted.
I'll reup for HotS, most likely. _________________

| Yeah, I've been watching a lot of SC2, but why go to the trouble of reinstalling and patching and shaking the rust off when there's an expansion in beta. |

Because I'm not in the expansion beta and my bro doesn't have anyone to SC2 it up with. Like all competitive things practice partners make this game better. _________________ interdimensional |

I'm actually sort of picking it back up, mostly because one of my friends is moving across the country and we'll probably start to play this. I definitely follow the pro scene, though the last month I've watched a lot less games for various reasons.
Anyone with an interest in either starcraft or watching esports should really just pay for season of GSL if they haven't already |

What's GSL?
It's been two years since I sorta maybe followed pro SC2 stuff, but now I'm totally out of the loop. Mostly I want to get my brother to be good at this game again, so pro stuff seems like GET HYPE stuff (which is cool) than other things. Also, I'm pretty sure I'm really bad at this game all over again :( _________________ interdimensional |

GSL is GOMTV's league, universally acknowledged as the best SC2 tournament in the world both from a competition and production value standpoint. Each tournament lasts a couple months, and every match is cast live in English by on-set, GOM employed casters (if you've heard of any SC2 casting team, you've heard of Tasteless and Artosis, who do GSL's Code S). The format is fairly complicated, but easily the best format I've seen for an esports league.
It just so happens this season's finals are tonight, so if you'll be awake in 7 and a half hours you can catch the crappy quality free broadcast |

This game is so good it's kind of sick. I want to dislike it, but it's just so well balanced and fun and I'm scared to touch that motherfucking ladder still.
I'm supposed to be getting into the beta w/n a few more business days says Amazon. I am sexcited. _________________ interdimensional |

I should have a beta key soon tooooooo~~~~
I keep wanting to commit to getting good at this game, but I can barely commit to getting up in the morning. Even with my pretty terrible mechanics it should be possible to get low masters with something approaching dedication. One day! |

So basically, SC2 lacks the stickiness of SC1 for me. Maybe I've just grown up, and I'd like to critique it without using words like "friction" and "mechanics", but until I get to high masters/low grandmasters, the game consists of just being faster than my opponent and picking a/b/c branching strategies. There's no ebb and flow like the original game where I truly feel I can come back by making better strategic decisions.
I'm not pro level, but I am pretty decent and on my last little binge with the game got into masters in korea, so i like to think i have some faint clue of what I'm talking about.
The game is fun, sure, but it's not the masterpiece of emergent gameplay and metagame that the original was. It's not even close.
I hope this doesn't sound too haughty or condescending, I just feel like the game is missing part of it's soul. Maybe I'm just too cynical, but I shouldn't be able to continually 4gate my way into masters every season, and I wish they wouldn't nerf my wonderfully creative terran builds.
Any thoughts, SB? _________________

sc:bw is one of my all-time favorites. the "use map settings" gave players literally endless gameplay, and also gave people a great taste of game dev.
does sc2 have great ums stuff going on? |

I think the main reason for this belief, which is fairly common (keep in mind I am a bad SC2 player and a completely awful BW player, but I at least Know Some Things), is because SC2 is a faster game. BW is mechanically more difficult, obviously, but the battles are slower and the pace is more deliberate (and the AI is way dumber). so your army isn't getting annihilated if you look away from it for a second, and smaller groups of well controlled units can play a bigger role than they do in SC2. things like siege tanks and mutalisks were also way better in BW, so you could make things happen with groups of units that would get swarmed over in SC2. |

Does that mean SC2 is the ST to BW's CE?

Also, Booter, SC2's UMS are pretty great as far as games and communities go. It doesn't have the haphazard make-shit-work-even-though-it-shouldn't feel, though. _________________ interdimensional |

can you give an example of one or two of the cool UMS maps? are there any new gameplay types on offer, perhaps some with emergent properties? is the next DOTA in sc2 ums? |

I don't know any that are radically new or emergent or whatever. There's a popular chuchu rocket clone, a spaceship war game, and some Battlefront games that come to mind. I'm sure there are some sweet tower D games and other DOTA a-likes, too. Tbh, everytime I thought about playing UMS in SC2 I thought about how SC2 was actually a phenomenal game and how I wanted to play that instead. _________________ interdimensional |

Don't know how taboo it is to attempt thread necromancy on a thread that has been dead for almost exactly a year but blizzard has open its gated community for all us peasants that don't see the value in the $60 (+$60) entrance fee and allowed us to use everything that isn't the full campaign and exp/ladder access. The most interesting news is access to the arcade where all the community custom games are kept. Not knowing the first thing about real starcraft play, this is what I'm most interested in. Haven't tried much but I've become some what enamored with Starjeweled where you get energy for matching blocks and then spending it on units and since I don't have a working knowledge of Starcraft units it quickly turns to me just matching blocks and sending any old unit into the fray and hoping for the best.
So if this is important to anyone else, I'm more than open to try some of these creations or even learn starcraft proper if any on is up to it. _________________
