nothing anyone has said in this thread so far has indicated the game ever gets away from execution of optimal strategies. Everything I've ever heard or seen just makes Starcraft look like the Tekken of RTS.
Total Annihilation forever.

Get back to me when you've played any RTS not by Blizzard. Any given Total War game is incomparable to Starcraft 2.

another god, you'll note I did not compare Total War to Starcraft 2, and indeed said they are incomparable. I was responding to what you said. Not every RTS singleplayer campaign is like Starcraft 2, and not every RTS plays like an SC2 clone in multiplayer. Not liking Starcraft has nothing to do with my views on the RTS genre.
Also obv you don't """"get"""" Total War if you think it's just about being "epic" and not about tactical play.

Only play Rome and after, and pick which one based on which era is the most interesting (they're all consistently good at their niche). Naval battles might suck in Empire, though I haven't played it myself.

Actually I don't see the TF comparison at all as each Team Fortress game requires an entirely different play style and most of them suck.

This is really tangential, but in comparison to Quake Team Fortress and Valve's Team Fortress 2, every other Fortress game or mod was shit. Even aside from that, the original Team Fortress and Team Fortress 2 have entirely different playstyles, the only thing in common being classnames and the worst map of the series (2fort).
