I'm building this huge mega construction. It's symmetrical, and the two halves of the last layer I was working on met in the middle a few blocks too soon.
Can't figure out what went wrong, or if anything is actually wrong. _________________

that must be unbelievably frustrating. I'm so sorry.
At least now you know why you shouldn't work on large structures in parts like that
Didn't you say you were gonna show us blueprints?

Speaking of which, I made a bit of progress in clearing out the space for El Castillo. I deforested the whole area and I started clearing out the dirt. I'm kind of afraid to touch my signal tower because it's one of the ones with lava lighting it up. It is in the way. _________________

Seeing them meet early was a pretty good warning sign, though. Whatever the problem is, I might not have realized it until much later if I hadn't worked on it in parts. Actually, I probably would have, when it extended too far on one side...
Whatever the case, I'm glad I noticed at layer 4, rather than layer 61.
Seriously reconsidering my decision to use smooth stone, though...
EDIT: Heavily edited the above post a few times within the first ten minutes or so. |

I won't post the whole thing, but here's a screencap of my psd doc (sort of, I modified it slightly for your benefit).
The things on the top and right are orthographic side and front views, respectively. The shapes extending downward off the page are layer by layer top views.
In the actual document those are all superimposed on top of one another, and I toggle visibility and transparency as needed.
It is a palace in the shape of an arched serpent, curled majestically around a floating sphere. It will be 61 blocks high, nearly touching the sky.
It stands in the middle of the bay, easily viewable from nearby mountains. The structure will be hollow, and home to a soaring cathedral-like entrance, with a hidden stairwell leading to a suspended belfry in the neck and viewing chamber in the head. The sphere in the center will be accessible by a scatter of floating half-steps, and will house a comfortable living quarters.
Longer term plans include emptying the ocean in the volume below and around the palace, where I will plant a lush and verdant arboretum, growing miraculously beneath the ice and snow. I will probably use glass walls here, but I would like to keep the ceiling as ice. |

Found my first diamond today. Made a sword. Was a proud moment indeed.
Also made a huge waterfall just behind my still unfinished house (clay is a lot harder to find then I thought) but I just can't seem to link up the water properly to the lakes around. Water physics in this games still manages to confound me.
Anyone know any good Alpha multiplayer servers to try? Would love to explore the new stuff for the Halloween update with you guys.

Solved the problem, by the way, and I'm back on track.
This thing is quite a bit larger than I expected it to be, to be honest. I plan to wile away on it for a long time to come. Hopefully I can finish before Halloween. |

Wow Lymojo, that sounds ridiculously amazing. Makes me jealous, and kind of motivates me to get back into minecraft (I've been taking a bit of a break) and work on something great myself!

Man, I would LOVE it if we could get an SB Alpha server, or at least a third-party server that we can make a makeshift home. I tried setting up my own server once, but this laptop isn't quite snappy enough to run a java client AND server at the same time, without introducing horrible game-ruining lag. And I don't know how long it will be till I can get my desktop up and running, and with an internet connection...

I think my problem is that I always, unfailingly get caught up in exploring the caves beneath me, and trying to expand my dwelling further and further into them as I do, even though I don't actually need so much space.
I need to remind myself that there are literally an infinite number of caves, and I can't expect there to be a fulfilling end to my exploration. |

If that's because of the coal consumption, I recently read on the minecraft wiki that you can also use a bucket of lava for the furnace, and it will count for 100 smelting operations (1000 seconds). This is in contrast to coal's 8 smelting operations (80 seconds).
The downside is that it also consumes the bucket, so you're basically trading 3 iron (and a lava spring) for 12.5 coal lumps. Whether or not that is worth it depends on your personal needs.
Edit: Also, because the max number of items in a single slot is 64, I guess the other downside is that you'll have to babysit your furnace to get full efficiency.
Otherwise, the conversion becomes a lava spring and only 8 lumps of coal. |

Almost wish I hadn't looked because I'd rather have experienced that sight for the first time in-game after a long dig downwards and then just popping in to a place like that. Ah well, I'm real hype now at least. _________________

we know so little about them yet that is what makes them terrifying
also, it would make sense if he tied them into the hell biome, so that you at least didn't have to worry about it until you broke through. |

This game is magic. No... this game is creation. At its very essence.
But seriously, I love Minecraft. I'll be haughty for a moment and claim the Alpha release is the first seriously great game of this new decade. :B _________________ http://anti-gaming.tumblr.com/ |

I'm pretty sure it's just some render using Minecraft's standard textures and a bunch of effects. Was posted on some other forum but I'm not sure of the true source of it. Would be pretty cool though if someone could build a map viewer that actually rendered the terrain like this. _________________

My spawn point is on the inner loop of a huge bay surrounded by peaks. After some inland exploring, I decided to check out this small island in the middle of the bay. After building a dock and a small base on the island itself, I dug a vertical shaft to check out what was underneath it.
Turns out, a giant cavern system. It's one of those where every time you go down a new opening, it opens up into four new ones. There's tons of branches where you can see that they're lit far off in the depths by a lava flow. Finding my way around without getting lost is extremely difficult, especially when I got ambushed by a creeper and a zombie deep in the caverns and I had to scramble from my spawn point, across the bay and down into the maze of caves to try and reclaim the iron and diamond that I'd mined. It's one of those areas where you'll start mining out an iron mine and suddenly bust through the wall of another parallel cave system, just as massive as the first, that just didn't happen to connect.
I think I'm going to have to start creating some sort of marking system on the walls. |

There's always signs:
where w is a block of wood (not tree) and s is a wooden stick.
Only real problems are a) you'll want to stick a torch beside them in order to read them and b) you have to knock them down to rewrite them (but luckily you get the sign back, not the ingredients)
it'd be nice if there was (fantasy-style) luminous moss/a way to direct it, though. |

Has Overviewer been mentioned yet? It's a tool for generating Google Maps-like representations of your Minecraft world. Here's the one I play on, for example. Kinda wish you could rotate the view, though, or have some sort of street-view analog, but that would require even more data and time for rendering. (For contrast, here's the same map from a few days earlier and another angle, with labels, but without the ability to zoom in that Overviewer provides.) _________________ JSNLV is frequently and intentionally wrong. |
