holy damn!!
apparently the games/mods "dark destiny" and "diadem of maunstraut" are quite good. i'm going to try them out very soon
here's a quote from the maunstraut page
| Quote: |
A major motivator in Diadem of Maunstraut's production was the death of the King's Field series. On June 2nd 2006, Mark Johnson head of Agetec announced that, until further notice, there will not be any other King’s Field (type) games being developed. (3) This was hard news to take amongst diehard fans. A select few began to seek out Sword of Moonlight, an almost forgotten PC relic, with attempts to make their own games. The full version of Diadem of Maunstraut is free for anyone to download. It is an ode to all King’s Field type games created by From Software and published to the US by Agetec. It is also a gift to the fans of this series who are craving a new game of this genre.

king's field iii. because the first three are nearly identical (and it is the most advanced of them graphically/functionally) and the fourth is, while very pretty, so sluggish feeling that even i can't bear it (no atmosphere would have been lost by increasing the movement speed this much aggh)
but if you can play import ps2 games, then ignore the above and play shadow tower: abyss first. it's as pretty as iv but just enough quicker _________________ o tempora, o mores |

I think the polygonal graphics of the first two games are a major turn-on. _________________

| Sword of Moonlight also came with a japanese remake of the original game, and thanks once again to John's original translation, I have been able to update the newer version in english as well. The project has been fully converted to english, and where necessary, voice overs have been added to the videos within the game to provide translation there as well. |

King's Field came first around '95. But maybe it appeared in an earlier game. I know nothing of From's pre-32-bit days.
That's cool but for some reason I didn't get English text when I ran it. Don't know what I did wrong. |

king's field 3 is a bit overwhelming. I'm still in the beginning of the game and I can't really figure out the rhythm to fighting skeletons. _________________

well, combat is really just memorizing how soon enemies become vulnerable again after attacking. it only takes a few plays/deaths before you get the hang of that one enemy (and then proceed to die at the next) _________________ o tempora, o mores |

my first encounter with the skeleton is in a room that has two ghosts and a flower that spits poison so I kind of have to weave around those while trying to get hits in on the skeleton and it is tricky with how slow I turn. _________________

I had this vague notion of doing a blind Let's Play King's Field IV but FRAPS just murders the emulator I was hoping to use instead of going out and investing actual money in a capture device.
I've got literal stacks of shitty old PCI TV cards with composite inputs but the signal quality on those is just disgusting, and I can't fit one into my PC without blocking off GPU cooling altogether. |

Moonlight Sword was definitly in KF first, since the games started in '94.
Actually, the translated PSX port of the very first King's Field is on Sword of Moonlight fansite. It's frighting because the game itself, though it was on a playstation disk, is only like 30 megs. I juuuust started playing it yesterday and I'm kinda wondering if I even like it better than the sequels. I'm not even playing the remake, I'm finding the original to be absolutely fantastic.
Like, ever game from 2 on had a run system where you doubled your movement speed but it sapped you of your power and casting bars extremely quick, so you had to do a run strafe wait then slash thing on most encounters. In KF1, running speed is your default speed. Also since the layout is more cramped and sparse, fights go much faster and it's tougher and great love it love it! |

| Can't get SoM to work quite right. A few things are going wrong: talking to people/checking signs yields no text, have to mash the button to confirm that I want to pick up an item, and I keep getting poison damage even after it has supposedly worn off. As cool an idea as this program is, maybe I'll just stick with emulating. |

could someone move this to kop? i think it's informative enough to warrant it (and it could be a general king's field/shadow tower thread) _________________ o tempora, o mores |

I began KF: Ancient City (ps2) a month or so back and got a few hours in and was loving it. I've been waiting for a break in things(life) so I can dive back in. I don't have time to devote full evenings to video games, and thats what you need to do for these games me thinks. You need to settle into a groove and ride it for hours. _________________

I'm slightly ill and this is the perfect thing to be playing. Except the more circle-strafe heavy fights are a bit nauseating in my current condition.
Currently I'm exploring the one cave opposite the palace with the CAUTION: POISON sign outside and boy that sign isn't lying. I already very nearly fucked myself over here earlier (while getting my pickaxe to go through the store guy's basement to the other side of that broken bridge to the miner's graveyard you find) when I ran out of Antidotes in there and suddenly realized I probably wasn't going to make it past the 400 red slimes blocking the entrance without getting poisoned because those guys are terribly hard to hit with a sword. Luckily the pickaxe itself proved pretty useful for just bashing on them from six feet away, even if it does pitiful damage.
Anyway I'm back up in there now a while later, got my morning star (well, two because I just had to spend 560 golds on one 12 minutes before finding one in a chest) killing me some slimes in a single hit, not having to be too terrified of zombie miners anymore. Just found a life stone which I recall some girl I met earlier (emo bridge-gazing dude's daughter?) wanted for her sick mom so for lack of a better plan I guess I'll go deliver that. I can go even deeper into the mines but you hit a point where the air itself is poisonous. Of course I'll have to do the whole thing again first because I found out about that air the hard way and the nearest save point is outside. At least I realized I was dying fast enough to sprint through the poisoned corridor to see there was nothing on the other side but a dead end.
Edit: oh this other dude wanted a life stone too but he wanted to trade it for a flask to hold the healing water you find in that same mine I'm in which would be useful but not terribly helpful in in my quest to uh, see if the forest folk will help me get rid of this statue or something. |

This sounds weird and interesting and as part of my staying up 24 hours to reset my (severely fucked) internal sleep clock as the new school year is imminently approaching I'll look into getting the translated port of King's Field running on this thing. Thanks.
EDIT: I have no idea what I'm getting into and that makes it all the more better! |

And then I learned how to shoot fireballs.
Which cost more than half my entire MP stock a piece.
And the dungeon this grants me access to is terrifying.
And the game made the healing water stop flowing for no apparent reason. |

I dabbled with a couple years ago, but I'm now a few hours into seriously playing King's Field (USA), and it's pretty much fantastic... once you get your head wrapped around the pre-analog FPS controls.
The best moment thus far was when I jumped down a well and found a save spot. I made sure to save in a new slot as I had no idea when I'd be able to get back to the previous level. I left the cave I was in and It turned out I had already saved at this spot several times before; I had uncovered a short cut. The map has been delightfully rich with these so far.
I have found a couple pits that lead nowhere and had to revert my save, so I'm glad I'm being very cautious with my saves. One of them had a locked chest, so that implies there's a warping ability that I don't know about yet, or a secret door that I couldn't find just by x'ing the walls.
I'm not entirely comfortable with combat yet, but I think I'm getting up to speed. It sucks when the halberd knights get to attack three times in a row with no cool down, when I'm stuck waiting to swing again, but it rules when I manage to trick one into always turning the wrong way and kill him cleanly in three hits.... _________________ Te Occidere Possunt Sed Te Edere Non Possunt Nefas Est
