The second part of this week's P&S could be described as a "very special episode", if only for the rather mixed reaction from parts of the fanbase.

Even when they're doing something a bit experimental, Gainax can still pull it off when they want to.

Guys, whenever someone asks, is animes art?

You point them to Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt Episode 9, part two.

You point them hard.

Started watching Highschool of the Dead drunk last night. Seemed pretty good, tired of the fanservice almost immediately, though.

You may as well quit now then, the fanservice is 75% of the point of HSotD.

Yeah, just think of the plot as a vehicle to produce scenes for more fanservice. And the fanservice itself becomes more and more ridiculous (sniping jigglies, sadist girl grope, the return of the bus) as it progresses. I'm not sure if the story become nonexistent or I just couldn't follow it in disgust after about 10 episodes.

Yeah, I pretty much gave up after the, technically plot-relevant, episode at the shrine and the sword-fighting girl and youknowhat.

PS&G 10 decided to drop as many musical references as possible in 5 minutes. There's a limit to how many parodies or homages you can put in a episode before it starts to feel lazy (ie. the Family Guy effect), and Gainax pulled that with shining stars. I mean, I love finding references in episodes, but the trivia for this one is so long it had no content at all.

did this too. this show surprised the hell out of me with just how well written it was, mostly with the sisterhood actually not being one-note characters based off their fascinations.

as for Star Driver... for a show 10 episodes in, not a lot has actually happened, has it? oh, and Takuto has funnels now.

We're talking Sailormoon levels of static plot development, here. The funnels thing was hilarious - it was both obvious and unexpected. But unless this show is at least Eureka 7 levels of long (52 episodes) I don't see how they are going to pull it around.

that's the thing with the show: it's currently scheduled for 26 episodes, but they've done fuck all with the plot so far. the only thing of note that has happened is that the Crux finally thought things through and decided to go for another maiden, but there's a whole bunch of retarded twists with that plot thread. like how the elite pilots went "oh, we can't beat him until we get third phase, but lets fight him anyway!"

I LIKED this week's Panty and Stocking. Both segments.

Some people get turned off by the "they're in the same room for the whole episode" bit, but I thought the little bits of animation they did were pretty clever and funny (this is a show where you really have to appreciate how they get the little stuff right, so key to the kind of American animation they're lovingly ripping off), and the stupid pole discussion they had was surprisingly funny (and shockingly subtle for P&S, given that it involved neither sex nor poop).

The crudity turns too many people off. It gets more than a little juvenile at times, but I think the raw NOVELTY of P&S relative to other anime more than overwhelms the immaturity of the experience. I really like this show on a technical level, it REEKS of homework. The people behind it not only LIKED the American cartoons they synthesized for this show (it seems predominantly Tartakovsky to me, with a couple nods to John K) but RESEARCHED the techniques and pop-culture aesthetic behind them.

Actual thought was put into this show beyond number-crunching on what mouth-breathing otaku to court with what slutty vinyl figurines. It is for that principal reason that I will never, EVER cease being an apologist for P&SG (can't neglect Garterbelt, he has really begun to assert his co-star authority in recent episodes).

While I agree, they do fall way too often into direct-pastiche that is less impressive and doesn't always gel with me. When left on their own devices, however, PS&G is brilliant pop/punk culture. Going to see the new episode in a while.

i seriously cannot fathom how anyone could have hated the 2nd half of this week's PSG, which probably did "slice of lice" better than some slice of life shows

Basically, they've got a comics code sort of thing going on:

Quote:
- Any character (no age restriction).
- In any manga, anime, or pictures (most likely including games).
- That feature sexual acts or sexual like acts that would be illegal in real life OR any sexual acts or sexual like acts between close relative who could not [legally] marry* if they were real AND
- Where the depiction / representation of the act is presented in an unjustifiably glorified or overly emphasized manner.
=> Is considered harmful to a minor’s mental health regarding sexuality, and therefore the Tokyo Metropolitan Government shall have the power to unilaterally restrict the material. where the sexual or sexual like act is considered to be excessively disrupting of social order (i.e. rape and anything else that could be deemed to be highly disruptive of social order.)

That probably puts about 95% of the porn artists in Japan out of a job (edit: or not; as Botagel notes it isn't actually targeted at above-18 stuff). Depending on how publishers and enforcers decide to interpret it, it sounds like it could also make it awfully tricky to approach the subject of sex in anime and manga.

Unrelated to that: Princess Jellyfish is pretty damned good! It takes itself exactly seriously enough (which is not very, but enough that you can empathize with the characters).

It's worth pointing out that this law actually has nothing to do with pornography that's already labelled as such. They already have laws on the books for the labeling/restriction of stuff that's marked as "adult content." The law also explicitly excludes novels, live-action film & photography from the additional scrutiny. It really is basically a "damn kids and their rock 'n' roll" law. (Or perhaps the My Little Sister Couldn't Possibly Be This Fuckable (Because That Would Be Illegal) law?)

Translator Dan Kanemitsu's been doing a number of solid English-language writeups on the bill and the controversy, like this one on the offensive content rules for anime/comics/games, and here's a post on the total scope of the law.

* See Of Illegal Fictional Marriages and Harmful Fictional Sex (Addendum) to see the complete list of marriages that are not sanctioned under Japanese law.

I find this addendum pretty hilarious.

Lain would fit in there. I figured anyone who asks if this medium counts as art don't have the patience to sit through a full blown TV series at first, hence I wrote that list with only the short anime I had in mind at the time. I would like to toss in Betterman in there, not because it is artistic or imaginative. Rather, it is the only anime that is 26 eps long I can replay without being tired of seeing the same plot. That was a nice mind screw

I feel the yokohama kaidashi kikou manga is significantly better than both of the anime oavs.

Where is Kanashimi no Belladonna?

The first part of the second OAV, however. I think it's a perfect literary device, something that could have been in a 19th century novel.

Sure. Keep in mind I'm not going for anything I liked

Tulpa wrote:

It is, but a person new on anime won't know so yet

Those pretty OVA are a way to get them interested

Tulpa wrote:

Same reason I didn't include anything else that is not there. That list was a quick draft I used with 18 entries. It will be silly to expect a list that short to cover every good short anime, that was far from the intention. It was only 18 anime I had in mind at the time, that would help expose someone new to the medium, outside the crap that gives anime a bad name. Your movie also fits the criteria but it isn't easy for most newer fans to watch

It, yeah, it takes a bit to get used to the crudity. And it's going to get worse before it gets better. I'd suggest trying something a little further on in the series before saying no. There hasn't been an arc yet so you can jump in whenever you see the other people in this thread talk about an episode in good terms.

I watched the fist episode of P&S when it came out. I agonized for twenty minutes and decided to never watch it again. And every time I enter this thread I think I should try again, before remembering how it was. And then I feel bad about the whole thing.

Probably for the best. I watched the first one, found the ED to be the funniest part of the show, and decided it wasn't worth my limited bandwidth to keep up with.
Though then I heard of episode 6's crazy action bits, and then 7 came along with the Transformers spoof that I couldn't turn down, and I watched and enjoyed both.
Though if I didn't have a bandwidth cap, I'd probably watch it just for the hell of it anyways.

Final P&S episode aired, ending's more than you'd expect even by Gainax's ending standards. They're certainly not afraid of trolling their audience, and that one will be remembered for quite a while. I loved it.

Holy shit, the last 30 seconds of PSG will destroy 4chan. Like tear them in two, kill their hopes, ruin lives, erase dreams, drive them to ultimate black despair from which there is no return fucking TROLLED to death.

Also! Chuck got a "Fuck Yeah" moment, which really paid off his whole character.

You guys should be watching PSG, if only for the music. I liked the intro theme remix that played in the beginning.

Hot damn that was great stuff. I was almost scared that this would be the end of it because I love this no holds barred attempt at entertainment with little to no care towards the audience other than giving them the ride of their life.

When it tries to work with its characters, PSG is usually good if not great (see the Garterbelt and Chuck episodes)...
