Someone pointed out that the Princess Tutu dub is on Hulu so I guess I'll see if I can put up with ADV's voice actors for long enough to make it through. (I'm guessing "no.")

watched the last episodes of escaflowne and virtua fighter.

virtua fighter's end was pretty great! they ended a videogame series with a boss fight episode. it went well. it's been replaced in my cartoon rotation by street fighter ii v, which is very camp.

escaflowne's end did the typical mecha show thing of going mental in the last episode. not sure yet whether i'll replace it with a fantasy show or a mecha show.

Dissapointed in Madoka because of the last episode. But hey, time for new Precure! Since they mostly got it right in the last show, they can't mess up much...

Erm, what's with the pigman there? And what the heck above and below the aisles...

Fuck!

What the...

AAAAAAAAAAAARG!

Seriously people, I'll be having nightmares about angry flutes with hands sooner than the pasted crap they put up in Madoka. Well, I guess this was a one off event, so let's check the bad guys...

;_;

Maybe the good guys...

Oh god

Even the required pet is some sort of freak:

And the heroine design is horrible:

Yeah, I'll provably skip this series.

EDIT: It should be mentioned that "giant queen" is sort of a theme in the Precure shows. But Heartcatch Precure mostly only mentions such things as part of a female summon with brass knuckles.

wasn't the original precure a show that could be described as "sailor moon, but with good fights"?

i'm almost tempted to watch this new show to see if it keeps up the insanity displayed in your screencaps. it probably won't, though.

Isn't that the case of most anything that's not on PBS though (and even most stuff that is on PBS, at this point)?

Yes, pretty much an attempt to make a "fighting" "mahou shoujo" using the Kamen Raider philosophy (ie. for selling toys). It kinda sucked at selling toys and fighting, but the nice, friendship-centered focus kinda sold the show. Also the hilarious unintentional lesbian and bondage references.

bought an issue of shonen jump, because it's $5 for a big wad of comics. it reminds me of the old days of animerica. it also makes me wish that raijin was still around.
also, i wish anidb had an option to search by year

man, madoka episode eight

homura is my favorite magical girl design ever

her costume is so minimalist it's hard to tell it's a magical girl outfit, and she uses a beretta and grenades for weapons

i'm a sucker for (relatively) underpowered protagonists

No, it kinda dove off a cliff. Watch Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magicka instead.

Star Driver was so mundane it makes me angry. Best part is last episode but doing a really neat thing does not pay off wasting 12 hours of my life.

Madoka keeps getting good/bad reviews from me and I'm totally not convinced the show is any good or that I should care about any of the characters.

The new Precure show is one of the worst things.

saying star driver "dove off a cliff" would require star driver was even able to manage a running start, much less a leap

boring fucking show

enjoying madoka magica requires a pretty hefty level of tolerance for visual novel storytelling, since while it's not based on one, it's written by a guy who usually writes visual novels and boy does it ever fuckin' show. it also probably helps if you're wise enough to how these things are written to be able to predict something like 70% of the plot points a month in advance, and watch the show mostly to laugh at the horrible things that happened this week and mark your bingo cards

Could anyone offer thoughts on these shows?

  • Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
  • Hi no Tori (and all the movies)
  • A Tree of Palme
  • Fantastic Children
  • HeatGuy J
  • Moyashimon
  • Kaze wo Mita Shounen aka The Boy Who Saw the Wind
  • Giniro no Kami no Agito aka Origin: Spirits of the Past
  • Shadow Star Narutaru (bearing in mind I found Alien Nine to be really gross)

Currently watching Now and Then, Here and There w/ my gf, and downloading Betterman on starblood's recommendation... Some other new shows to watch might be nice.

I still want to finish Texhnolyze, and I've never seen Wolf's Rain. Those are on the short list.

Brotherhood is supposed to be pretty good, though if you've seen the first FMA series, the early episodes will be really rough going. Not only will most of it be material you've seen before, with some significant changes (since Brotherhood mostly follows the manga's storyline), but the pacing and structure of those early episodes is straight-up bizarre. The series opens with (what seems to be) a random one-off villain and a chance to re-introduce a number of significant characters, which is followed by an episode with Ed & Al's superhero origin story, and then the third episode is the original first story from the manga. Which would be the one which originally introduced the heroes, their powers, motivations, etc., all things which have now already been covered by the previous two episodes! I know I'm being a nitpicky nitpicker, but the whole thing left a bad taste in my mouth, especially since the material wasn't nearly as well presented as it was the first time.

Of the various Phoenix productions, I've only seen the TV series (and read several of the arcs of the manga), but it's quite good and runs like, $15 on DVD, so it's hard to go wrong there.

Moyashimon is a charming series, but the TV series, like most dozen episode affairs based on an ongoing comic series, just kinda ends. There's no indication they ever intend to continue it as an anime series, and the manga is noticeably absent from the release lists of Del Rey Manga's transformation into Kodansha Comics, so don't count on reading that to find out what happens next.

Agito knocked me out within a half hour or so the one time I tried to watch it on fansub years ago; from what I've heard, I'm not missing anything.

Skip Narutaru.

I was really excited for Narutaru, but yeah. Not Konaka's better script adaptation (to say the least).

You should read the Phoenix manga rather than the anime.

I have hazy memories of HeatGuy J, but i recall it's exactly what you expect of a show called HeatGuy J and nothting more. The animation was okay, I guess?

I love Moyashimon to death, and I didn't realize this about the manga. My heart has sunk.

I'd say watch it, it's a short 11 (!) episodes and though you'll want more, it's excellent for as long as it lasts. Also notable for taking place at a university instead of high school.

I have seen Haibane Renmei and I love it. I may still try a bit of Wolf's Rain with caution, but thanks for the warning.

starblood, of the others you mentioned I have seen Le Portrait de Petit Cossette and I didn't like it at all, but I've been interested in a few of those for a while. Especially Big O.

I've never seen any FMA, but I'm pretty sure I've heard that Brotherhood is better, so I wondered if I should just see that one.

I did not see it at your MAL, sorry about that. I knew you were negative about it in the past, but I was not sure if that was an impression or an opinion. My guess is that you can try the second FMA series. You will get the manga storyline, and if you care to see the other series, you can watch all the things they made up when they caught up to the manga. This gets you the best out both. I liked the first series just fine to consider Brotherhood

What the heck ever happened to Eve no Jikan did people just stop subbing it, or what? Maybe I wasn't searching diligently enough but all of a sudden it seemed like the torrents all dried up.

Answering specifically to Mikey's question about the fansubs, Eve no Jikan was licensed for streaming half-way tru, so the fansubbers dropped it.

All six episodes of Eve no Jikan are available fansubbed, as is the movie. I don't know why the torrents have dried up though, if they really have.

The movie is just the series edited into one product, although it does add a few interesting new scenes (backstory on Sammy, as well as further fleshing out Nagi's character).

I'm hoping we get a second season eventually.

nearing the end of angelic layer.
the way people talk about the champion/misaki's mother borders on religious fanaticism
also, there's a beach episode for no reason. and in the beach episode TEEN ANGST RIGHT OUT OF NOWHERE

street fighter ii v's ending was not as good as virtua fighter animation's ending. but street fighter ii v is not as good as virtua fighter animation in general.

serial experiments lain has a really nice atmosphere.

finished angelic layer. the show becomes a chore in the last few episodes, but before then, it's great. except that monica rial has a voice like some kind of banshee foghorn.

when i started reading shonen jump a couple of months ago, i didn't expect to like naruto more than bleach. but naruto is weird nonsense with giant foxes and okay art, and bleach seems to be a bunch of ugly people with big chins standing about in a desert while holding swords.
one thing, though: japanese shonen jump has 22 series running and it's weekly, english shonen jump has 5 series and it's monthly. what a gyp. and it's not like they don't have the room for more series. the ones they have get 2-4 chapters in each issue. they could make it so each series gets 1-2 chapters and have a much better variety.

i wish raijin comics were still around, it was way better in every way ;_;

Takeshi Koike's Redline is a rare achievement in feature-length animation. It is a work of obsessive detail and compulsive creativity, a singular and uncompromising vision, presented with the highest level of production values that studio Madhouse can deliver.

That vision is at once demented, delirious, and decadent. It is hard-edged, hypnotic and hyperkinetic.
Everything on screen, from even the most minor character's costume, bodily accessory and anatomical shape, every geological formation and architectural scheme, and most especially, every piece of mobile machinery and the effects they produce, has been designed and animated to draw attention.
In the world of Redline, nothing looks the way it is expected to look, and nothing happens quietly.

Among its many memorable scenes: the depiction of every conceivable method of placing a driver at the controls of a vehicle, culminating in a montage of cybernetic interfaces jacking into the alien skulls of Roboworld's fetish-fashion-wearing republican guard.

It is the accumulation of such details that mark it as a rich work of true surrealism, using dislocation and mutation to cast skepticism on the logic of mundane reality. Redline exemplifies the very thirst for excess that it satirizes: by delivering an excess of speed, sound and sensation.
It is a vision so peculiar, and so specific, that over time, we surrender the need to comprehend and the film's agenda becomes clear: a trance-like state which has altered our perception of the world that only lets go when the lights come up. Redline is a hell of a ride, but proceed with caution.
