Death Note is pretty good so far, but I'm only like 5 episodes into it.

Honey and Clover is slowly pushing Evangelion out of my top spot. If I had a Honey and Clover poster, this might happen. But then again, maybe not.

Tim, you should watch Kino's Journey. Or Sousei no Aquarion! That show is fun, and has mech-based orgasms.

Yes! Nana is good, Elfen Lied is unique ... and Bokura ga Ita isn't half bad, but that also means it isn't half good.

I think you're supposed to watch Honey and Clover, Tim.

Don't watch Honey and Clover II. It's not good. The show ends where it's supposed to in the first season.

Fuck Shana. That show sucked. I kept waiting and waiting for it to get interesting, and didn't see it happen.

Yesterday's anime was the end of Gurren Lagann.

Today's anime is going to be Genshiken 2.

There's no way that Genshi is going to be as good as Gurren, but I'm certain I'll still enjoy it ... because Genshiken is like hanging out with the anime friends I don't have.

It's like hanging out with you guys!

SO, what anime should I be watching? I feel a hole in my heart where Gurren used to go. The shows I've tried/given up on/sorta am still watching include: Nana, Seirei no Moribito, Naruto: Shippuden, and Shana (This show sucked and I have no intention of taking it up again.)

This thread is too long for me to look through, so I'll just blindly post here:

Has anyone been watching ef - a tale of memories?

I've just watched the pilot, and it's got some pretty nice visual choices in it. It's really simple stuff about guys who like girls and meet up with them.

But there's constant camera angle changes and some nice animation. Also, the pace is slow but not stupid ... which makes the whole package compelling.

Anime is loved by the young and poor/middle class here. In Japan, it seems to be the hobby of the super-rich. Is this why the american market is drying up?

Or is it just the internet and the turn-around time of new shows?

I was making a guess; sorry if it didn't come off that way. It's just that anime is super-expensive in Japan, so I figured fans of it must be ... wealthy.

Some of the quotes in that video are laughable.

"Their art direction" -- "Their emotions"

Like all of anime is directed by a single person. Or even that it has a consistent look.

Selectbutton,

So far, as of episode one, Mnemosyne is pretty grand. I've got a crush on the protagonist, green-haired Rin.

The show is a very dark, cruel, grim sci-fi thriller about ... well, I don't know yet. The animation is really nice, and the plot is some kind of conspiracy-cloning-horror thing. There's some charm to the script, and the action is well-done.

So, what is the SelectButton consensus? I'm going to keep going with Allison and Lillia, because I love shows that fetishize flight, no matter how basic they may be. Mnemosyne is short, so there's nothing wrong with finishing it up. I didn't mind ep. 2 of Druaga. And I'm getting my hands on Kaiba.

Is there anything I'm missing?

Twice.

Today.

It does a pretty good job of giving fans a little more stuff to be excited about.

There was plenty of Fanservice, but yes ... it was distilled down for new viewers.

I don't really know how it works if you haven't seen Eva, because I've seen Eva a lot. I thought they honored the source material (sometimes shot for shot) but also added a healthy dose of new content. I really couldn't complain about the film, save to say that I've wanted a poster from it for six months and can't find one anywhere. But that's not really a complaint about the movie, is it?

The question of Spirited Away's pacing is interesting. The first time I watched the film I overall disliked it for that reason, but over rewatches I started seeing it differently and it became my favorite Ghibli film.

Spirited Away is the only Miyazaki film I haven't enjoyed. The plot felt arbitrary, and the imagery looked like recycled bits of Alice in Wonderland. It stands out as totally strange to me.

Macross Frontier. It's got everything that I want in Anime:

Feminine Male Hero who throws Paper Airplanes a lot and looks at the sky.

Pop Star Female who has been sheltered too long to be real to people.

Little Girl with Talent and Determination, who is not reduced to fanservice.

Robots. Piloting. Flying. Flying as a fetish. Flying a lot. Flying.

Futuristic worlds that look like San Francisco.

Holographic advertising on everything.

Really great cell phones.

Is anyone trying Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu blah blah blah?

I was into this show when I thought the backgrounds were painted.

Now, not so much.

And yes, Macross Frontier begins to suck.

So, what is there to watch other than the incredible rubbish of Code Geass?

I gave up on Bokurano about 6 episodes before the end. If a show can't keep you interested that close to the conclusion, it's missing something.

Hm.. I'm tempted to try out all 3 shows.. What are the actual names of the latter 2?

Basquatch is the awesome robot basketball anime. Queen's Blade is the much less awesome porno women fighting each other anime.

Higashi no Eden is the first, and almost as interesting as Basquatch.

My endorsement of Queen's Blade was not sincere.

Also, saw Sky Crawlers last night. Liked it. Gonna review it for Play.

Guys, have you been following Queen's Blade? It's like finding anime at your local video store, circa 1994. On VHS. Where there are panties on the box cover.

It's all fighting and tits. It's the anime's anime.

Hey, to those who are watching Haruhi:

Are the episodes being directed slightly differently each time to echo a type of anime? This one had the shots of telephone wires and such that recalled Evangelion, and then actually referred to Unit 00. I swore one of the other ones felt like Canon or whatever it was called, where girls look up at the sky and see airplanes all the time.

Anyone else noticed this?

Yeah, I can't believe that they've made the audience wait for two years just to show them one episode over and over again.

I think they're trying to demonstrate that people who watch cartoons are idiots.

Hey, any of you guys seen Time of Eve? It's only six 15 minute episodes, and it's kinda compelling. Or at least, it's not total trash. It's about robots in the future. The main character finds out that his personality-free house-android has been making unscheduled stops at a cafe, and so he checks into it with his friend.

I guess the first movie premiered in Japan this Saturday.

Guys, the best anime out there is Katanagatari. It airs once a month and has surprised me at least once an episode. It's really solid, and has a unique visual style.

This image does not give you an idea of how dark this show can get.

A synopsis I read gave me the impression that it's kind of like Utena.

My currently airing favorites are still Tatami Galaxy and House of Five Leaves, but I will be checking this one out.

I don't get a Utena vibe from this at all. It's a fighting show (collect the swords) but with better-than-average comedy and storytelling. And some really dark reveals. Hmm. When I write that I see how it sounds like Utena, but Utena felt a little self-involved. Katanagatari is interested in telling a story, as opposed to masturbating in an art gallery.

I like House of Five Leaves, too. (I also like Rainbow, but in the way that I enjoy some of the garbage available through Instant Que on Netflix.)

Puella Magi Madoka Magica is the Evangelion of Magical Girl Shows. There have only been three or four episodes so far, but it's pretty great. Best anime of the last two or three seasons.

Exactly why I find it interesting so far. Isn't that a theme Evangelion tackled? Deconstructing the emotional realities of becoming a giant robot pilot?

EDIT: I gave up on Bakemonotagari because of the direction and production staff. I'm not interested in Utena-likes.

The scene where Mononoke chews up beef jerky and spits it into the guy's mouth is pretty great, though. There should be more scenes in movies where things are so hopeless that a guy can't even bring himself to chew.
