Armitage III isn't too shoddy either, as far as cyberpunk goes. Sure, it's more action-oriented, but still worth the look.

Armitage III has this sex scene that I thought was really hot when I saw it on tv at like 10 years of age.

Yeah, I saw it when I was a teenager too, so whatever. I just remember it as being a superiorly entertaining anime, like Iria: Zeiram the Animation.

Come to that, in recent memory, I'd heartily recommend Read or Die as far as fun, stylish action OVAs go.

its like i said..i probably wasn't in the right frame of mind to watch it back then..
I wouldn't mind having a good detective who-dunnit anime.. or maybe a columbo-esque thing... cos Peter Falk is badass.

anyone watch seirei no maribito? Content aside, it has gorgeous animation. The skies are animated, the fights are actually choreographed, the first scene is just production ig showing off how much money they dumped into animatoin for this series. Good stuff.

Content is pretty good too I guess but I need to see more before I can say anything else.

I've been keeping up with it and recommended it a few times in this thread. I agree that it's definitely worth checking out for the production values and attention to detail alone, but it does look like there's something very worthwhile here too. The fight sequences in episode 3 were particularly above par.

In episode 4, there's more exposition and a couple character introductions, but it's balanced by humor and a brief action scene in the beginning, which does a good job of sketching out the shaman Torogai's characterization.

I wish the opening and ending sequence songs weren't such generic tripe, though.

The greatest opening and ending sequence in anime history are Brain Powered's. The opening has all the female characters on the show flying around naked with some giant robots while a J-Rock song plays. Talk about a two-minute summary of anime itself. The closing sequence is just a bunch of flowers, but the song is the best thing Yoko Kanno has ever composed. It's as classy as the opening is not.

The consensus is that it's Mahoro from that awful robot maid anime GAINAX did.

I ONLY LIKE IT FOR THE DANCING. Since I am obsessed with Japanese choreographed dance moves :(

Also that is totally the girl from Mahoromatic, eerrrrr Mahoro! You know, don't stick it in her pooper girl. (Which actually she is really just like BEING A PERVERT IS BAAAD)

At any rate, that picture needs more Nadia :( I wonder if NHK has a tight grip on Fushigi no Umi, because we hardly ever see something from Gainax with her.

Kiss Dum - Engage Planet #1 has inane amounts of drama and absolutely no plot direction. I still have no idea what going on, but tons of people are dying, what is nice. Needs more viewing before a conclusion can be reached.

Shonan Jun'ai Gumi was nice, but didn't fill my required quota of burning spirit per minute (bs/m). I'll await the next installments.

Jigoku Shoujo Futakomori ended, and it was better than Jigoku Shoujo. The ending was still crappy, incoherent and too long. Pitty because the show had some really good ideas that fell flat.

so, right now, the only two things I find remotely worth watching are nodame cantabile and seirei no moribito and none of the studio 4c stuff is coming out for a while so I had this sudden urge to look back at some less known but still good legacy anime. Old animes had some themes and feelings which have since been lost or murdered and repieced together to what we loosely refer to as 'moe' now. And as well, all those old animes had steretypes. But I'd imagine, somewhere in the that hell hole of unoriginal low quality stuff there has to be something good. This unfortunately can not include any anime that features more than 3 minutes of panning before two people are about to fight. Generic stuff is okay provided it was one of the first few of its kind (so I guess it wouldn't be very generic). A good example of what I'm looking for would be akira but everyone has seen that. Anyone knowo f anything more obscure?

On a side note, does anyone know where I could get paprika and tekkon kinkreet. I've been dying to see those two, particularly the latter.

Haibane Renmei is, at the very least, interesting; enough to warrant a look. Mushishi is lush but extraordinarily episodic, which worked in this instance for me, but may not for others. The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi plays around with the set of characteristics you mentioned disliking, but it does so in a fun way and over a backdrop of light sci-fi. None of these are really like Akira, though, and none of them are really that obscure.

Oh, you might like Rah Xephon, if you haven't already seen it. It's basically the spiritual successor to Evangelion, but I actually prefer it.

Sony owns the domestic distribution rights to Paprika and Tekkon Kinkreet, so both have been making festival rounds. The former is hitting limited release on May 25th, with a DVD release in Japan on May 23rd. Tekkon Kinkreet will be released on DVD in Japan on June 27th.

Well, the key here is that all 5 of them are mecha-related (three pilots and two actual robots), though in the episode itself there's quite a few more girls (and that transvestite from Abenobashi) who make the mecha theme less prevalent (though the few I could identify were from gunbuster).

I've been watching Gunslinger Girls for the WTF value. It's actually been a pretty straight shot, no fucking pun intended.

Will probably jump on Gurren as soon as it's done. I've been hearing on a couple forums now that it just keeps amping up and up and up. Makes me wonder if they'll be able to end it well. Especially in light of Diebuster's ending.

Anyway: Been following Denno Coil as new episodes come out. It's kiddie in much the way that Miyazaki films are kiddie. Which is maybe still too kiddie, but I'm gritting teeth and bearing it. The hook of the show is that it uses Augmented Reality; people wear glasses which let them see virtual objects as though they are part of the natural environment. Information screens, fishing poles, virtual pets, etc.

It's not badass, so unless you're intensely interested in the Augmented Reality part like I am, you may just wanna pass.

I'm listening to the Macross Plus OSTs on my new headphones and going O_O so I guess Macross Plus is gonna have to go on my SEE SOONER RATHER THAN LATER list. Ahh, dearest Yoko Kanno; if you didn't look like a 30 year old guy in drag, I'd probably have a crush on you.

It may just be the show with the greatest idea of this season, however. It's worth noting that Mitsuo Iso is a pretty unknown creator (he aparently wrote the Eva episode where the MAGI gets infected with a virus?), and mostly an artist, so it should have been one hell of a pitch - and unless Bandai has something of a stake on AR devices it's not a pure merchandising tool. It does have the same pokemon-ish characteristics, what is rather interesting. Well see how it goes, but I'm pretty confident Madhouse can pull tru this by being interesting and not moeee~.

On a sidenote, Gurren shouldn't end well. We need a post-punk Evangelion.

I feel like there is nothing left for me after Kemonozume.

Actually, that's not quite true — I just got Paprika. Have yet to watch it.

For the most part, though, I don't see a lot that interests me. Help?
