Apparently. And with that all comes to naught.
Anyways, in good news, I would highly recommend Takashi Miike's "13 Assassins" probably the classiest blood and thunder exploration I've seen since Peckinpah's Wild Bunch. It's style and absence of Miike peculiarities does nothing except embolden it's focus driven narrative, and in terms of a Chambara film it's mediation's on violence comes down to a singular statement at the end of the film that resonates deeply. It's a supreme film, a truthfully grandiose experience that can be so quiet, and so loud.
For those who are more well versed with samurai/Buddhist code and Japanese history, I would suppose that there is some existential criticisms of what was occurring at the time, represented by the two dueling Samurai in the film. A consistent theme of inquiry and deterioration becomes the actual duel itself between the two leaders. It's been done before, but never with so many actions mirroring and encapsulating their beliefs between the two.
It's not Seven Samurai, but fuck, it's up there.
Definitely the best film I've seen all year. If you guys can, catch the Japanese theatrical version instead of the international version, which is cut by twenty minutes. |

My reaction to that film was "Holy shit! Samurai Contra!"
I liked it a lot.

| it is kind of hilarious that they were like we want it to be a prequel not a remake cause we don't want to defile the original remake. |

Do people know that they can create movies with new stories?
Like, you can literally just pay some other guy to do the writing. _________________ "Godzilla could be anyone."

Maybe the prequel will end with everyone dying and then two side characters you know nothing about and who don't speak English despite having been stuck with an English speaking cast fly off in a helicopter chasing a dog.
Also, check out The Things. _________________

better cgi than 2046, at least. this movie is going to rule so hard.
also if you can find the leaked amazing spider man trailer, note the last sequence's clear debt to mirror's edge. cool. _________________ The text will not live forever. The cup are small |

I haven't seen Redux, but the original Ashes of Time was nicely shot, an interesting concept that was entirely awful to watch. _________________

i don't know it looks like every post-matrix, post-tony jaa martial arts cliche shoved into one scene to me. nonchalant hard kicks, super slow mo cgi close-ups. it feels like shit that would've had people going BADASS in 2003. yuen woo-ping is a pretty awesome choreographer who i respect probably above all other fight choreographers ever, but he works so damn much that at least a third of his stuff ends up feeling phoned in. and this trailer is one of them, to me.
like the last thing i saw from him that seemed pretty cool and unique was unleashed. movie was all kinds of dumb, but the choreography really felt like what you would think a dude who is basically a human version of a dogfight dog would fight like. all crazy energy and no technique, just ferocity and relentlessness.
this just looks like every other shit ever, to me. like would it even be a blip if it weren't tony leung and wkw. i'll still see it, though. and i still want to see true legend. |

ugh yeah i am pissed for missing true legend when it was playing here. i guess you're right about the choreography but for me the water kind of kept it interesting. i think this one is promising because it's an interesting subject (the fact that there are already, what, 3+ movies about ip man released recently notwithstanding) and the cast is good. it is a weird sign that the trailer is focusing on the action, but i'm still assuming the actual fight scenes will be sort of an afterthought. _________________ The text will not live forever. The best untrained, vicious, nihilistic beyond the boundaries of nihilism martial arts film is Dog Bite Dog. Totally worth a rental. |

Yeah the plot of that movie was really dumb, but man, between the choreography and Jet Li just nailing it, the fights were great. |
