Most martial arts movies go through a character arc, though. Dudes are huge assholes, lose everything, learn not to be assholes, beat the bad guys out of zen-ness instead of anger. Ip Man starts out all zen, plus he's an asshole, and then at the end, he's still a zeny asshole.
My favorite part of the movie was when he waited until his family was sick and starving before even thinking about finding a job.

The women who plays his wife is beautiful. Just sayin.

and Master Liao's fighting style is awesome and worth watching the movie for. I mean, it is a pretty good movie, but he stands out.

*Also, Donnie Yen and Jet Li fought in "Hero". That movie is pretty damned good if some of you have not seen it. Crouching Tiger is still my favorite Martial Arts story though and also has some of my favorite fights.

** and yeah, I was pretty upset about how Jet Li was used in Expendables. After the excellent "Unleashed", I was hoping that Sallone, a man who likes to make characters with character and heart, would be the next person to tap Li for a reasonably substantial charcter role.

I've seen the first Ip Man film. Pretty cool fight scenes. Ip man 2? I only watched the final fight scene and lol'd a lot. Is Ip Man 2's story worse than the first?

i don't think Ip Man 1 or 2 were more nationalistic than anything like, say, Rocky IV

meaning, it's obvious and a little silly, but i still enjoyed them.

attack the block was also pretty cool. definitely deserves a wider release than what it is currently getting, for sure. nearly empty theater (and the only screening of the day), too, and i haven't seen a single ad for it anywhere. sad when movies just sort of get dumped like that

It's pretty fantastic. It's the very video game-y pleasure of figuring out a system in a novel environment.

I found Pan's Labyrinth to be pretty "meh," (which was a bit of a let down).

I honestly can't remember much from it, though. I'm gonna count that as a strike against it, since a lot of great movies have scenes that seem to haunt or obsess me for the rest of my life.

Pan's Labyrinth didn't inspire much feeling in me either way.

I liked the scene where the fascist crushed the revolutionary's face with a wine bottle and the scene where he sewed his cheek up. Both were the right kind of special effects, editing and violence

I appreciated the feel of the creatures a lot as well. The movie had some problems, but I would say I liked it.

Pan's Labyrinth is pretty garbage aside form the special effects. Suffers from the same problems as Schindler's List, except nowhere near as interesting and even more morally offensive.

Point is, watch The Devil's Backbone instead. Or The Orphanage if you want a better del Toro produced film.

hey cool dracko said what i was gonna, pretty much. 'cept i haven't seen either of those other movies.

but i'd recommend alex de la iglesia's the last circus and dying of laughter as two much more interesting depictions of the horrific dissolution of humanity that became of franco's spain.

Woah that video almost made me forget to post Gorblax.

I saw American Yakuza on Amazon Prime, and it was amazing.

Then I started Death by Murder which you might not have heard of because it has Petter Sellers playing an Asian stereotype. But it also has Columbo playing a parody of Columbo + Humphrey Bogart. The murder doesn't happen until an hour into the movie.

Still can't comprehend how Final Destination 5 is an actual genuinely good movie with plot, twists, characters and excellent use of 3D on top of the crowd pleasing violent deaths expected.

Like, Saw VI levels of surprise that it's not brainless trash.

Do this more Hollywood, tia.

Yeah Kill List looks awesome. Reminds me of Notre Jour Viendra which I hope comes out on DVD soon, or is out now.

Also the monsters in Attack the Block were really cool looking. Even in full view, brightly lit, they still had the look of total darkness which I loved. It's one of my favorite movies this year, though I do tend to favor movies/shows about urban British youths.

IDK it's hard to imagine anything more vulgar than a Hollywood Holocaust film. Reducing the Holocaust to cheap sentimental entertainment, especially when there are so few survivors left, is beyond disgusting.

Schindler's List is actually really popular in the Orthodox Jewish community. The Holocaust survivors my family knows feel pretty strongly about it, but not negatively.

I just saw Steve James' The Interrupters. It was made by the director of Hoop Dreams, and it follows former criminals whose sole goal is to stop people from killing each other. They don't help the police, but they don't harbor criminals either - they just try to talk them out of killing each other. Their organisation was founded by an epedemiologist who thinks violence has to be treated as a contagious disease - violence begets more violence, so when you stop a murder in a bad community you are also reducing the culture of violence and preventing revenge killings.
