This is plotting, here.
Is Gene Hackman gonna lose?
(Of course fucking not.)

First stills of Tintin: The Secret Of The Unicorn

That is some uncanny valley they have going on there.

And I was just thinking "Hmm, they're almost out of Harry Potter movies. What's going to be the next holiday cash cow franchise?"

Smart move going the CGI route, then. No way they can keep some kid looking like Tintin for the next 24 years.

Valhalla Rising was absolutely incredible. Brilliant even. Equal parts Kenneth Anger, John Hillcoat, and Terrence Malick, I'd go so far to say that the film was fucking inspiring.

To be honest though, the last act was a little shaky. It was still fantastic.

I'm trying not to be completely pessimistic about the project, but the stills from Tintin remind me of the realistic drawings of mario you see from time to time. A bit grotesque.

The Red Shoes on BD, the Malicks if you're into him.

And those Eclipse boxes get mighty enticing. May be worth it for me to pick up that newer (older) Kurosawa set, even if it isn't his finest work.

I'd go with The Night of the Hunter, which is coming out later this month. It's truly one of the great American films, and the supplements look outstanding.

But the smartest bets are on the box sets.

The more I see from that the worse it looks, but it simultaneously gives me hope for some cool looking scenes in Superman 2 (6? 1?) especially since he isn't writing it.

I think the worst thing about Zack Snyder, in a strong field, is his soundtracks.

saw 'monsters' today, it wasn't nearly as bad as that hysteric freak-out dracko posted implied. re-reading that review, all of the flaws he was unable to get around are certainly apparent, but i found everything else engaging enough to still try to take the movie seriously. the concept of a road-trip through a dangerous jungle with the threat of giant squid monsters is just too good to hate. i have no idea what how seriously the filmmaker expects his movie to be taken, but coming to me the sci fi channel comparison is pretty apt. this is kind of like the base-line of what everyone should expect from no-budget b horror/sci fi, and i see no reason why the cinema shouldn't be flooded with this kind of stuff.

i would describe it as 'lost in translation' meets 'the mist' by way of 'cloverfield' and 'district 9.' i'm guessing what pissed the reviewer off so much was that at many points the film seems to be reaching (and utterly failing even though the film has 'some cool shots') for some kind of aesthetic poignancy, but in spite of that i still really enjoyed it. it's just nice to see a movie about horrible aliens destroying the planet that is willing and able to continually deny the audience the fulfillment of their desire to witness destruction. in 'alien' (and countless others) the scariest things are those that happen just off screen; in 'monsters' the scary 'monsters' are not even the point--because the characters in the film are too freaked out to go anywhere near them. unfortunately it seems even on a shoestring budget it was necessary to include some spectacle. and yet, the best scene in the movie is not any of the several in which the alien squids are all up in your face, but the one where the characters hear weird noises in the jungle, freeze in their tracks, and then turn around and walk the other way. maybe it is striving to be the 'casablanca' of alien invasion movies: we know there's a war going on, and the movie couldn't happen without it, but the characters are trying as hard as they can to have as little to do with the war as possible. i think that's a pretty admirable and realistic premise for a film, it's just a shame the writer couldn't come up with anything less trite to fill the rest of the space.

parker wrote:

A hardcase walking purposefully with a bag, I'm real excited for this one. It's called Im Schatten.

Quote:
Im Schatten is a work of classicism – a straight-up crime film juxtaposing the mechanics of a career outside the law with clear-eyed views of industrial Berlin.

The protagonist, Trojan (Mišel Matičević), is a professional who always acts purposefully, with control and precision. An effective, propulsive score describes a life of constant motion; and photography of fluorescent interiors (shot with a Red camera) perfectly captures a world where night always reigns.

Did this movie ever get a US release or what?

Damn, both it and Der Rauber were at a "Berlin and Beyond" film festival in San Francisco last month. Wish I'd known that, I might have bothered to see about making the effort to take a locomotive or something just to watch them. But I got no idea when they'll be available in the more convenient dvdrip format or anything.
