Oh man a remake of a bad sci fi movie :3

one step closer to the Hollywood Wonder Woman dream

How will nicolas winding refn interpret the old cat man? Will he maintain the conservative disgust with promiscuity so essential to the original?

The only person who could do Atlas Shrugged justice is Paul Verhoeven.

In the same sense Starship Troopers did the book justice, I take it?

As I understand it, and Costel knows probably as much if not more about this than I do, the market place for fairly low budget, experimental 'art' films released direct to video no longer exists so people like miike and kiyoshi kurosawa and even Seijun Suzuki (he made a musical romantic comedy) have been forced into a relatively mainsream position of bigger budget less adventurous films and are now basically injecting the mainstream with 'talent'. Shinya Tsukamoto has a big enough international audience that he doesn't have to worry about japan not being willing to financially support his films, and Sogo Ishii hasn't made a movie in like 7 years now.

So I guess that's a positive answer to Remote, Miike NOW does art films on the side plus more ostensibly mainstream stuff. But this has only really been the case since 2005's The Great Yokai War.

He's always made more conventional genre films mixed in with all his 'edgy' films, they just haven't really been a product of the japanese film mainstream until the Great Yokai War (maybe even Zebraman but that movie does a lot of interesting things) Man I wish I was able to draw the distinction without sounding like a schmuck this conversation has too many quotes.

I'm pretty fond of Kurosawa's non-horror work because of the subtle ways his obvious horror roots influence the tone of the films. Still haven't seen Tokyo Sonata though.

It's a lot better than most of Wes Anderson's other work too, if only because it doesn't feel so #firstworldproblems when the protagonists aren't the hyper-wealthy

Yeah I am not at all surprised it only took 3 comments for someone to point out that Rand had some pretty horrifying views on women and sexuality. Fetishizes rape and subservience so much.

BTW TMKF there are a million more quotes of that sort strewn throughout all her books so yeah it is actually pretty safe to criticize Rand for misogyny even if she had some token non-misogynist opinions that haven't actually been very radical since 1920

What On Stranger Tides is the basis of the new movie? That's odd indeed.

Monkey Island was inspired by On Stranger Tides too.

That is a pretty bleak film. I found the black humor really odd, but not out of place. I felt like I'd be bad if I laughed, and so I did not.

I loved it. Beautiful soundtrack.

You should watch the director's other films!

No such thing as a retcon if the only X Men comic you read is New X-Men (And Milligan/Allred's X-Force and X-Statix)

Hated Lady Vengeance, don't see why anyone could like it at all.

I was made upset by the Jack and Jill trailer. I called TMKF after and he told me that Mister Popper's Penguins was a real movie that came out and I felt distraught. I felt like all the safe illusions in my life were shattered. #firstworldproblems

I haven't seen Redux, but the original Ashes of Time was nicely shot, an interesting concept that was entirely awful to watch.

I liked the scene where the fascist crushed the revolutionary's face with a wine bottle and the scene where he sewed his cheek up. Both were the right kind of special effects, editing and violence
