I'm still not sure on whether the couple in Certified Copy knew each other. It's fun to think of it as some game, but the interaction as "strangers" getting to know each other is what delivers the films power. I'll need to watch it again (saw it in September), but Binoche's son's behavior in the beginning struck me as someone who didn't know Shimmel. Either way, I'm glad about this ambiguity, as either interpretation has strong arguments and I'm sure Kiarostami likes it that way, also, that "Love Streams" piece on Mubi is indeed lovely.

I think Kiarostami is in many respects the most fascinating and radical filmmakers working today. One can look at film like Close-Up as the most serious attempt of the blending of fiction and non-fiction (a recreation of an impostor deceiving a family, using the actual impostor and family to play themselves), or the overwhelming density of the village in The Wind Will Carry Us (where so many characters are referred to, rather than seen).

TMKF I'm surprised you've said that reviews for Certified Copy have been mixed, with complaints of wooden performances. It's been pretty universally well received (well, not exactly "universally"). with Binoche's performance usually being the first thing highlighted (I do think Shimell deserves more credit, he is really good, especially considering this is his first performance as an actor (he's actually a renowned Opera singer!).
