I still can't believe it.

Even Sofia Coppola was way out of his league.

Lars is the best troll. Sucks he's banned from Cannes now.

I think Melancholia would make a good double bill with The Tree of Life.

Both beautify cosmic imagery, yet are complete opposites (creation vs the apocalypse, romanticism vs nihilism, one's made by the most secretive of recluses, the other a flamboyant media hound).

It turns out Malick is a huge fan of "Zoolander," Stiller's 2001 send-up of fashion fabulousness — so much so that for Malick's birthday one year, Stiller dressed up as the character Derek Zoolander, made a personalized video card and sent it to the director. "I think 'Zoolander' is one of Terry's favorite movies ever," said Jack Fisk, Malick's longtime production designer, who has known him for nearly 40 years. "He watches it all the time, and he likes quoting it."

"It's very childlike; there's a sense of wonder, and nothing sarcastic or dry about his sense of humor," Chastain said, perhaps also explaining the appeal of the straightforward slapstick of "Zoolander." "Even if a dog is funny he'll say, 'That dog is like a clown' and just start laughing so hard the camera will shake."

Did a wiki and he just seems like some traditional big Hollywood writer for hire. I guess Schindler's List gives him cachet (I guess Dracko will point out how it's a tonally odd dark comedy which is true when you consider Amon Goth and the "pardon sequence").

Kind of surprised he's attached to a Gondry adaptation of Ubik. Wonder how that'll turn out.

OH! And a David Cronenberg Jonathan Lethem adaptation involving romance and black holes.

Is the "pardon sequence" on youtube?

It's really kind of amazing. I couldn't believe it when I saw it.

I guess this is relevant. Kind of ironic that it took Kubrick from beyond the grave to make Spielberg challenge himself (whether you like A.I. or not, you have to agree that the ending is deceptively saccharine as its reality is extremely disturbing and raises more questions than answers, the opposite of Spielberg's previous oeuvre.).

This, and The Tree of Life, are probably the only films you need to see this summer.

Seeing Tree of Life on Friday when it finally opens here. A bit nervous, since Rosenbaum apparently didn't like it and Ebert loved it. An Ebert 4-star is probably the biggest critical buzz kill I can think of, at this point.

I want it to be good so bad, please let this be an exception.

Enter The Void: A-

The Tree of Life: C+

CoSo, I see you gave The Tree of Life 5 stars on mubi. I'd like to know more about how you felt about it, since I've still got pretty mixed feelings.

I'm still processing it, but I'll be sure to come up with my reasons soon.

To my surprise, the parts I enjoyed the most weren't the brakhage via discovery channel bits prevalent 20 minutes in, but the stuff focusing on the kids. Probably out of nostalgia of having grown up in a small town for my first 15 years. Didn't care much for the romantic/life platitudes narration, but that's Malick. I can't deny it's one of the most beautiful films I've seen. I really feel like I should see it again.

I saw it with my dad on father's day. First thing he said after we walked out of the theatre: "Please don't tell me you liked that." Should have seen The Green Lantern instead ;_;

I do like Bay as a director of set pieces and action (even though he can be prone to an overuse of quick cuts in some scenes). It's just that there is DRAMA (Armageddon/Pearl Harbor) and COMEDY (Bad Boys/Transformers) in his films as part of hollywood script quota and boy are they bad.

He does have a weird combination of libertarian distrust with military fetishism in his movies, but that is America and Michael Bay is America.

Disappointing coming off of Casino Royale, but still better than any of the Brosnan films.

I read the book in grade school and found it rather charming.

The only thing the film seems to have in common is penguins and a guy named Popper.
