Strange Days: The best 2 1/2 hour music video that's missing most of the music.

In mainstream movie news, the new Pirates of the Caribbean is coming out tomorrow. For those of you unaware, I just want to point out how weird (and potentially unprecedented, although I haven't done my research) this is. On Stranger Tides was a book that came out in the late 80's. Disney bought the rights to it and stuck the PotC characters in it.
So, we have a franchise based on a 50 year old dark ride that has eaten up a book. This is hard to wrap my head around, guys.

Also, with the billions of dollars, you'd think some other movie studios would want to get on the pirate money train.

I saw Limitless today, it's pretty OK. Movies based on short stories always feel like movies based on short stories, and this one does tooooooooo. One thing I was not expecting was the fun, music-video visuals.
It's my top contender for best opening credits so far this year, but, of course, I can't show you guys because the movie industry doesn't get youtube.

Oh saw it too, it's my least favorite Pirates. No one fired a cannon once in the whole movie and the swordfights were weak. This is what I come to see, guys.
On the other hand, the costume and set design was delightful. It looked like they were working with a lower budget, so I'm glad to see they took that out of the CGI (which was pretty bad.)

The Swedish Girl With The Dragon Tattoo was amazing. There's a huge rape scene that has nothing to do with anything, except the Swedish title is 'Men Who Hate Women,' tying everything together, see how that works? The final answer to the mystery is so dumb me and my sister just didn't say a word to each other about it ever.
Speaking of my sister (this is the older one), she made me watch The 500 Days of Summer which was uninteresting. It had a very specific pallet, mostly brown and beige, with a bit of blue and the occasional splash of red. It's some amazing coordination to have such a tight pallet, but there was no reason for it. It didn't mean anything. Those are ugly colors, your movie is ugly, if you're going to make your movie ugly, at least have a real reason.

Oh whatever guys. You watch LOTR for the production. The sets, costumes, and minutures are just fantastic.

Yeah, I was seriously looking forward to that after reading a bunch of stuff that said they weren't relying on CGI. They seriously did the 'dude getting pulled across the ground and screaming' shot?

Gonna have to see it because body horror, but yikes.

Saw Akira for the first time today. Akira might be the best looking movie.

So, you can rent 13 Assassins on Youtube of all places. It's 99 cents, so I'm probably going to give it a go.

Looks like the Scanners remake has been dropped, but we're getting a TV show out of it?

Wait, what if they drop the The Fly remake and make a TV show?

Youtubing 13 Assassin's right now. It is certainly a sub-par movie watching experience, don't bother.

Watched Renaissance. The people and designs are all ugly, and the story and action are worthless, but there is no finer shader-porn. Movie made my brain hurt for the first 15 minutes until I got used to it.

The twist was actually pretty good, and the ending was fantastic, so it's worth watching through.

Ip Man is a pretty terrible film, though! I spent the whole movie trying to figure out the moral. Is he going to learn not to ignore his family? No, at the end his wife apologizes for asking him to spend more time with his son. It's a movie with an extremely violent main character who lecturers people about non-violence.
Fights are neat, though. Bit weird when he breaks that one dude's leg and the guy doesn't even make a noise, though :o

As far as instant-watch goes, we have Bodyguards and Assassins (added today), the Ip Mans, Legend of the Fist, and Dragon Tiger Gate. Flashpoint goes up every once in a while, and it's my favorite movie of his. Very high ratio of fighting-to-talking.

Recommend SPL too. Dumber story, but really neat fights (including a few against a very unconvincing guy in a fatsuit.)

I Saw the Devil doesn't really get interesting until like an hour in when the baddie starts trying, but I've never really liked rape-revenge movies.

Most martial arts movies go through a character arc, though. Dudes are huge assholes, lose everything, learn not to be assholes, beat the bad guys out of zen-ness instead of anger. Ip Man starts out all zen, plus he's an asshole, and then at the end, he's still a zeny asshole.
My favorite part of the movie was when he waited until his family was sick and starving before even thinking about finding a job.

It's pretty fantastic. It's the very video game-y pleasure of figuring out a system in a novel environment.

"'The Fly' is not exactly a remake, it's sort of a sequel, kinda. Yeah, that was a thing. I've written a script of that, and I don't know if that's going to really happen, but that has to do with Fox."
