“Like okay, I just came back from Rome where we’re working on film about Pasolini. It’s about the last day of his life. It’s a narrative. It’s about the murder. It’s kind of a Rashomon meets All That Jazz sort of thing . . . I don’t think that guy he was with in the park was capable of killing him. Pasolini was a tough dude, you know what I mean? . . . we’re going after the Rashomon approach where will show that version, but then there’s the version where it’s a political assassination, and then there’s the version of the bad director, where the guy got a little bit out of control. You play with fire, you get burned.”

I saw Super-8 last night.

It was actually really great! It's obviously indebted to the Goonies but they cast the childhood innocence against a much harder edge. Full marks.

considering it's by the director of zombieland and stars jesse eisenberg, 30 minutes or less wasn't nearly as bad as i was expecting. mostly thanks to aziz ansari.

it does seem like a really odd actual event to base a comedy movie on, though.

It's based on a thing that happened the way Texas Chainsaw Massacre is inspired by the true story of things Ed Gein did with furniture.

I guess I'd like to know what others thought of that movie. I thought it was fucking insufferable and a big miss at attempting to invoke Carpenter.

This is pretty devastating.

I would have counted Raul Ruiz as easily one of the top 10 contemporary filmmakers. His visual command, and elegant approach to the fractured and anarchic. is unparalleled.

I just saw his most recent work, Mysteries of Lisbon, back in March, and thought it was one of the best films I've seen in the past decade.

I would recommend Hypothesis of A Stolen Painting as a starting point, but my favorites are City of Pirates (one of the most visually arresting films ever) and The Blind Owl (a truly radical work as seen in this appreciation by the underrated Luc Moullet), both of which can be found on certain torrent sites.

No joke, I think this will be the only superhero movie that is worth a damn.

Fyi, I have discussed confusion between the guns n roses logo and ed hardy, and how jonah hex sucked with neveldine and taylor via email.

Watched Renaissance. The people and designs are all ugly, and the story and action are worthless, but there is no finer shader-porn. Movie made my brain hurt for the first 15 minutes until I got used to it.

The twist was actually pretty good, and the ending was fantastic, so it's worth watching through.

God, I hated that movie. The moment one character earnestly said "Without death, life is meaningless", especially. Mainstream French sci-fi films and their ridiculously misguided and disgusting attempts at intellect.

Not even Viktor Antonov's designs could save that one.

I'll be happy if Ghost Rider 2 is as good as Spawn, because the first one wasn't even as good as Spawn.

hopefully they'll find something better for him to do than be the butt of a bunch of short jokes? donnie yen does seem to fit in with the rest of the expendables cast a little bit more. i wonder if he and jason statham will have a staring contest

I have been a firm Donnie Yen admirer ever since Iron Monkey, but I have never really watched much of his other stuff. I think I have a few of his films in the Netflix queue.

Ip Man is a pretty terrible film, though! I spent the whole movie trying to figure out the moral. Is he going to learn not to ignore his family? No, at the end his wife apologizes for asking him to spend more time with his son. It's a movie with an extremely violent main character who lecturers people about non-violence.
Fights are neat, though. Bit weird when he breaks that one dude's leg and the guy doesn't even make a noise, though :o

As far as instant-watch goes, we have Bodyguards and Assassins (added today), the Ip Mans, Legend of the Fist, and Dragon Tiger Gate. Flashpoint goes up every once in a while, and it's my favorite movie of his. Very high ratio of fighting-to-talking.

Recommend SPL too. Dumber story, but really neat fights (including a few against a very unconvincing guy in a fatsuit.)

I Saw the Devil doesn't really get interesting until like an hour in when the baddie starts trying, but I've never really liked rape-revenge movies.

Most martial arts movies go through a character arc, though. Dudes are huge assholes, lose everything, learn not to be assholes, beat the bad guys out of zen-ness instead of anger. Ip Man starts out all zen, plus he's an asshole, and then at the end, he's still a zeny asshole.
My favorite part of the movie was when he waited until his family was sick and starving before even thinking about finding a job.
