| So Halloween is coming up! That means it's time to start watching horror films. Has anything particularly interesting come out in the past year? I was hoping to have some horror nights with friends starting next weekend, but I'm not exactly a horror aficionado. I was hoping there have been some good horror movies that came out more recently, rather than relying completely on top 10 lists of horror films. |

| Ignatiy Vishnevetsky, on The Social Network wrote: |
| Fincher 1) does not believe that that filmmaking merely consistutes a series of aesthetic choices and 2) must therefore believe, unlike most of his peers, that some moral truth exists, however hokey. And whereas Sorkin has sided with the truth of the legal record (wherever Zuckerberg settled out of court must be where he went wrong), Fincher sides with possibly-nonexistent "truth of the image." With the exception of a few rowing scenes, The Social Network has even less in the way of spectacle than Zodiac and underplays its climax, yet Fincher, ever the neurotic artist, treats the movie as if he's been comissioned to paint an altar: as though, with sufficient detail, he will find an absolute truth in this story of bickering Harvard boys and the girls they can't get over. The moral of Zodiac: messy, contradictory truth is found in the search for the unattainable neat, simple truth. So you already know that Fincher's search for this "grand truth" is a failure, but what results are dozens of crystal-clear petty truths (about people, specifically people trying to impress each other, and about the way those people pin their problems and ambitions on others) that spring forth from the contrivances, coincidences and endless montage sequences. Or (again): Hollywood, as always, is more concerned with "big issues" than its independent counterparts, and in this completely mercenary ("Everybody uses Facebook—this movie'll make a fortune!") and entertaining corporate thriller full of stereotypes there's more thought about ordinary people than in most films that are ostensibly about "ordinary people." To put it bluntly: find me a young American indie director that believes this firmly in anything, even if it's the nonexistence of absolutes. |

[Reeves] already has plenty of ideas, from a 3-D black-and-white sequel to a multi-director extravaganza involving Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola and Werner Herzog.

I saw I'm Not There last night. I really enjoyed it, speaking as someone who generally hates biopics. Blanchett was particularly good, but I liked most all of the Dylans. The Billy the Kid sequence was strange, but tied him into the larger fabric of American history. Interesting. _________________ last.fm

Church can suck it.
I really like the aesthetic of this, but it's slightly troubling for a few reasons. Not because it might seem racist, but because it's exploiting poverty and alienation to sell fashion, or something. What do you guys think? _________________

it's a watered down version of those old controversial united colors of benetton ads. i'm not sure what korine's intention is (it seems like everyone's been out 'subvert' things for decades) but the very presence of the brand or product means that in the end (like the benetton ads) you're supposed respond to it by buying something. _________________ ( ( |

movies i watched recently
a zed and two noughts - one of the nicest-looking movies i've ever seen, but the story was just a bunch of pet motifs randomly colliding with each other like i'm supposed to scratch my chin and admire the duality of it all. definitely want to see more sacha vierny-shot movies now though
ghost in the shell - more dumb anime shit than i remember, there's a difference between subtle and anticlimactic, kaiba's better for playing the ideas out instead of endlessly pontificating on them
blade runner - glad i waited to watch this on a nice tv. dialogue's a little hamfisted at times (and yeah i saw the final cut) but everything else about it is perfect
shaun of the dead - don't think i've ever seen a movie this funny with direction this great. i'm glad that someone with this good of an eye is making mainstream comedies. probably gonna buy scott pilgrim on blu-ray
dead ringers - awesome, i was so sure jeremy irons was two actors that it bugged me that they seemed to have clearly different facial structure. i'm retarded. the twins' relationship was surprisingly easy to sympathize with, they were actual characters instead of A Set of Ideas About Twins which makes greenaway trying to grab credit for it through zed it all the more obnoxious |

Yeah, the existential monologues are pretty embarrassing and in some ways less sophisticated than the lighter take that the comic provides.
BUT.
The direction is actually pretty sophisticated--visually stunning artwork and animation with a lot of care put into composition. Or at least that's what I seem to think every time I rewatch it (it's been a couple years).
For all the heavy-handedness and authorial voice that spills from the Kusanagi's lips throughout, the climactic scene is quite beautiful and effectively conveys the theme of the film through action. As a whole, I think GitS is pretty subtle and elegant--there's just a lot of pointless jawing gumming up what should be a tone piece.
I wouldn't call it anime shit, so much as pseudo-intellectual yammering. _________________ "Godzilla could be anyone."

Oh, here's something:
I rewatched some of 8 1/2 for a class recently, and I think I still hate it. Until taking this class it was my only exposure to Fellini. After taking this class I think he's a genius. Nights of Cabiria was a fun exercise, La Dolce Vita was brilliant (if less intellectually engaged), and I've heard tell of some of his later, more bizarre works.
But 8 1/2 just seems sophmoric: egotistical, overtly "artistic," and obsessed with metafiction but to no end. Even if you don't buy into the ideology that seems to underlie Cabiria and (I'd argue) La Strada, you can at least see them as elegant attempts to embed early media critiques within the art form itself. That's pretty interesting to me. It's not interesting to see a director pontificate his own luxury problems through onanistic experiments that convey little more than neurotic self obsession. No wonder Woody Allen was such a big fan.
So there's that. _________________ "Godzilla could be anyone."

by "dumb anime shit" i was referring to the horrendous period joke at the beginning and the gratuitous robo-nudity. the way people talk about it i always thought the GitS franchise had a reputation of being above that stuff.
also whenever anyone uses some crazy technology, someone shouts the full name of that technology in surprise. which could be charming elsewhere but not in something that takes itself this seriously. |
