Have you watched Hatchet 1? It's largely just as repulsive, gory, and stupid, and a shitload of fun for it.

Film concurrently with Bloodrayne 3, with mostly the same cast and story.

The Wrestler was pretty much the best Aronofsky movie, though I liked the Fountain (not as a "good movie", but as the end of a trainwreck, it was interesting to see).

I will see Black Swan whenever it gets to Cleveland.

I saw Requiem in the theater when it came out and never really ran into too many people that had watched it outside of this forum, so that might be why I can still like it. Calling it nuanced at all is a bit amusing though, since it is clearly meant as an assault, and works pretty well as such. Not subtle, but pretty effective. A little too overreliant on Aronofsy-isms, but I expected that after Pi (which was a film worth seeing, but had a ton of issues script-wise).

Ebrey wrote:
You guys should watch Big Fan to get a better idea of how much of The Wrestler came from its writer. It's a good movie, similar in ways to The Wrestler but also an homage to Paul Schrader films.

I have it on instant queue, so I should watch it at some point. I know from reading stuff around it that it was really a collaboration of the two men, which is good, becaus Aronofsky needs someone aorund to keep his excesses in line.

I am very glad Jackass 3-D is there. I have rarely seen a movie that was such a celebration of camera technology in such a perfect way.

I just saw The Fall, which I somehow hadn't even heard of until a week or so ago. I was very impressed with it. It reminded me of The Fountain*, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, and The Princess Bride. (And maybe Pan's Labyrinth, too, a little.)

Yeah, The Fall was certainly worth watching, and the story behind it is kinda amazing as well, if you feel like looking it up.

At first I was kinda put off by the rougher, more realistic portrayal of the Foot Clan, since I think a certain degree of camp is kind of vital for something like TMNT. But then I started thinking, what if something like this could be made with the grit, the comedy, and the drama of Robocop? Not sure that's exactly where this little short was headed (I'm thinking probably not; it seems more enamored with The Dark Knight), but the idea is fun...

The only problem I had with this was the portrayal of what I assume is supposed to be April O'neil. No reporter on earth works at a coffee table like that, on a pristine macbook.

Why Albemuth? Why not Valis? Why Alanis Morisette? The end of the trailer, where it says PKD wrote Blade Runner, and calls Albemuth his most personal story, is a bit funny.

Yeah, I wouldn't call Source Code a classic or anything, but it is worth watching and is pretty well put together. Only major complaint I had was the complete overuse of the soundtrack, which just grated on me after awhile. Otherwise a pretty decent movie, and good to see any small-scale sci fi show up in theaters at all.

Atlas Shrugged was so amazingly insane on just so many levels. Even the cinematography is stupid. It's kind of perfect.

Favorite current detail: The director of the movie plays John Galt.

I like that they get someone from the Ayn Rand Institute to write an article on their site.

I also like that Ayn Rand specifically requested that no such institute exist.

FMF is so great.

Also, that article claims Rand is anti-racist? Funny, because her books feature nothing but white people, and the one african american shoe-horned into the movie is basically a servant for a white woman.

Hrm.

well, in her text that I have seen, she just never talks about race. everyone is just white, which is a special kind of racism. As for misogyny, well, yeah, she does address that and holy shit. :(

I think that not including non-white people = racism is not all that sound an argument. It might sound logical at first, but it ignores the possibility that it is a conscious decision because the author does not feel that he/she can comfortably relay the experiences of a culture he/she wasn't born into without it coming off as tokenism or cultural exoticism. I would never argue that this was the case with Rand, because I can never know, but it's a pretty big leap to say that one = the other.

Oh, sorry for misstating; I agree wholeheartedly. It's just that it's really conspicuous in the book, and made even more conspicuous in the movie (seriously). In the book, it's just weird because she puts her philosophy into absolutely everything, but just leaves race out entirely. She presents her world view as basically a solution to everything, but just completely ignores one of the biggest problems around. I don't necessarily think she was actively trying to be a racist, but just sort of passively was reinforcing it.

The movie just tries to pretend it isn't an issue at all, except the only black guy in the whole thing is the subservient to the main character and is generally just really poorly done.

Punch Drunk Love was the one and only time that was harnessed in a way that actually made it mean something, instead of just being dumb explosive rage played for dumb laughs.

It was so wonderful for that.

When I was a kid, my parents decided at a certain point to introduce me to R-rated movies. The first movie they did this with was Beverly Hills Cop, which was fine, since mostly it was rated R for Eddie Murphy's mouth, and my parents already swore all the time, so no biggie.

Next, though, was Robocop, and man did the violence of that movie mess with my head as a kid. Great movie though.

Yeah, I was probably 8 or 9 when I saw Robocop, and I loved the movie aside from the scenes of peter weller getting shot to hell and back, and then the melting guy. Those messed with my fragile little mind.

Yeah the plot of that movie was really dumb, but man, between the choreography and Jet Li just nailing it, the fights were great.

it does seem like a really odd actual event to base a comedy movie on, though.
