I really liked X-men: First Class.

And Kung-fu Panda 2.

I've never read a single X-Men comic book.

If anything read Grant Morrison's run on New X-Men. It is superb in general and an amazing deconstruction/reinvention of the X-Men. I believe there's a link in the axe comics thread.

Though to be fair, Marvel has basically retconned the whole thing.

I liked the building of Shaw as a big bad guy. His lack of aging and tremendous resources implies that he's been around for a while, which means mutants aren't as 'new' as Xavier believes. This concepts wasn't really explored in the movie, but that's because there was a strong sense of urgency throughout the whole thing which Shaw causes.

As for the argument that the rest of the cast is distractions, I just can't disagree more. They were bit players yeah, but developed well as far as bit players go. Yeah, it was the Charles and Eric show...but that's the whole point. Ya know, main characters v. supporting characters, all that.

Though the quick kill of Darwin was pretty lame, with him being the only black mutant and all. The death itself was gnarly though.
