caught Midnight in Paris after work. first off, if you want to see this movie and, somehow, haven't had the twist spoiled yet, i'd advise to stay the course, as it'll make it that much more satisfying. spoilers: with that said, knowing that Owen Wilson was going to be doing a time warp-thing and hob-knob around with Hemingway et al was satisfying, in that i felt a bit giddy after the introduce F. Scott Fitzgerald by way of Zelda. as a whole, it's an interesting meditation on how we value nostalgia and the past and i quite enjoyed it. also felt kind of weirded out, since film seemed to mirror my own life and problems, but then that also sort of happens to Gil, wherein the climax mirrors a revelation about his novel. i will say the movie opens with a beautiful montage of Paris, in so much that it casts the city as ordinary as any other city, only taking glances at the vistas and sights.

also watched RoboGeisha. i haven't seen Tokyo Gore Police yet, but compared to Machine Girl, it lacked a certain low-fi charm and was a hell of a lot less violent. in fact, i thought the movie was, quite frankly, a retarded plod for the first 2 acts. then the 3rd act opens with RoboGeisha playing a (robo?)shimasen, sprouting tank treads and zooming down a highway while a third rate, spot on synth homage to Basil Poledouris's theme from RoboCop plays, and the whole thing becomes more retarded. but in a good way. like, a castle that's also a giant robot, wearing a bomb around its neck like a pimp chain. or when said giant robot smashes buildings, and the buildings respond by spouting blood. and an ass sword fight (even stupider/more brilliant than it sounds).

oh, you don't even know, Owen in what seems like full on nervous Owen mode and a Woddy Allen script? he gets to be a bit much sometimes, but i think the overall permise wins out and somewhat compliments him.
