New Hyperbole and a Half! It suddenly occurs to me that these pictures look so much better at fullsize and not downscaled by Blogspot. |

There has to be a trope page for comics with effed-up panel orders, along with a gotcha in the last panel.
Which reminds me of:

why did the author break panels? that's hardly a polyptych, and is mostly pointless/distracting.
actually, L, that above little strip kind of describes why i dislike a lot of webcomics. they've got this aesthetic, like this... cupcakes or EPIC or something? like, it is like sometimes it feels like comics online are the cake is a lie or whatever and i think i'm making a point but i'm having a lot of trouble expressing it. _________________

I believe there might be an underlying assumption that this causes the entire page to load faster. |

If this has been posted then too bad! You're getting a mention of it again.

I dunno about that one... the humour starts to grate a bit after awhile. The human/nature opposition that makes up the long-term plot seems a tad uninspired, especially owing to the fact that Gil, the ruler of the city, is an altogether unlikeable caricature. And it gets slightly frustrating having the main plot constantly be interrupted with unrelated asides from nameless neurotic animals.
I do admit that the main character's design, and that of the fantasy spirits he meets, is interesting. |

I think most of your concerns would be alleviated if he split up the comic so that his 'asides' and his main plot were in separate archives. So if you don't like the gag-a-day format you can enjoy the story and vice versa. And absolutely, I found it completely jarring to have a completely serious tone with brother white wolf be changed abruptly by a humourous comic the next update.
I think since it is only updated on Wednesdays he really hasn't considered the option. It would mean both would not be regularly updated because he seems to just pick a type by whatever he feels like doing at the time. |

Did you expect this comic to blow as completely sky-high as it did?
While observing the way Problem Sleuth’s readership grew and looking at the viral trends surrounding it, I did expect those trends to continue for Homestuck. But I don’t think I pictured the audience getting this big quite this fast. In 5 years? Maybe. 2 years? No. If it keeps increasing at similar rates, at the 5 year mark it’ll be something ridiculous that I was completely unprepared for in my most fantastical estimates, and I’ll probably have to reevaluate what the fuck it is I’m actually trying to accomplish here. 1 million readers per day as appears to be the case now still seems somewhat manageable, primarily if I just don’t think about it and keep working on stuff. But what if it’s like 20 million in a few years? I don’t even know what to think about that. That seems like a weirdly disproportionate reality for something that was just supposed to be a ridiculous little web cartoon one guy scratches out with his spare time. That is more like a hit tv show that by some cruel mistake got trapped on the internet leaving some poor slob to somehow manage. Hit tv shows that rope in 20 million viewers have these entire networks run by executives who fly in private jets to make big time decisions for them and figure out how to manage the monstrous demands of the public. And yet as insane as it sounds given recent trends this feels like an outcome I actually should be thinking about and preparing for in some way.
This is probably as good as any reason to start ticking down the GREAT ANDREW HUSSIE CORPORATE SELLOUT CLOCK. Like not even to make loads of dough. Just to bail me out of some looming intractable clusterfuck, a phrase some thought would be synonymous with the story itself. Turns out it applied to the ballooning readership all along! |
For some reason this answer, and its tone of increasing desperation, cracks me up. |
