PostPosted: Tue Mar 06, 2007 4:40 pm    Post subject: recommend me some super robot anime    Reply with quote

I have a hankering for some super robot anime, and would like recommendations. I've already seen all of Mazinger Z, and I'm most strongly considering Great Mazinger and Getter Robo. Ideally I want something from the "golden age" of super robots from the 70s for maximum "feeling like I'm 10 again" action. Any other recommendations?

The Gekiganger OVA. It's actually part of a newer anime, but you can ignore that.

It looks kind of like a retro homage to Mazinger Z. Is this correct?

I'm afraid I've never actually seen Manzinger Z, but it would be fair to say that it is a retro homage/parody of the Super Robot genre.

If it has "Gundam" in the title I'm presuming it doesn't feature monsters like this:

and thus is not the kind of thing I'm looking for.

Luvcraft, I loathe G Gundam, but it does have Sea Bass Gundam.

I think that it's safe to say that it is the least Gundam of all the Gundams.

I'm not saying I have anything against Gundam, I'm just saying that in this thread I'm craving super robot anime, and Gundam is the very definition of "real robot anime", which is the antithesis of super robot anime.

And I'm telling you that G Gundam is very, very, very far away from "real robot anime." I'm not sure that it quite reaches super robot anime status, but it does its damndest to try.

Edit: In fact, the article that you linked to lists G Gundam as a Super Robot Anime.

G Gundam is super robot anime.

It features giant monster robots created by the devil cells from the devil gundam.

The main character's robots special attack has him screaming really loud and then tearing a robots head off.

OH! OK! Thanks! I just saw "Gundam" and my "craving super robot anime" brain turned off. I'll go check it out!

The Big O is a good one. I mean, if you like the idea of a Super Robot being piloted by a Lawyer.

Some of the new Go Nagai (creator of Getter Robo, Mazinger, Cutie Honey and Devilman) stuff is good. Getter Robo: Armageddon is gorgeously animated, extremely dark, and completely nonsensical. It's a ton of fun in the right mindset!

Mazinkaiser, on the other hand, strikes the perfect balance between the light & corny 70s and the dark & incoherent 90s and might be just what you're looking for.

G Gundam, is not really a Gundam series but rather a Giant Robo series. You should definitely see Giant Robo if you haven't, it's fantastic.

GaoGaiGar is an extremely fun, ridiculous super robot series from the 90s (the genre had a big comeback in this decade after being unpopular in the 80s).

How did you see Mazinger, anyway? I didn't think it had been fansubbed. If you can see Getter Robo the same way you might as well do it.

gekigangar is more of an homage to getter robo than mazinger z (three pilots, heroic sacrifice, yatta yatta).

yeah, i personally like daitarn 3, but it's not everyone's cup of tea. check out raideen too. most of the brave series rocked.

g gundam is extremely super robot, and hilariously good fun. i think you'll enjoy the hell out of it.

Very very VERY bad DVDs, subbed by a Chinese company who knew neither Japanese nor English. Not a single sentence of the translation made any sense, and all of the characters' names would change every episode; throughout one episode they consistently translated Sayaka's name as "Howard". Also, the title screen said "PALY ALL". Via the simplicity of Mazinger Z plots, these surreal subtitles, my super-tiny knowledge of Japanese, and some fond memories of Tranzor Z from childhood, I was able to cobble together a semblance of a plot for most of the episodes. They were stolen when I got burgled a couple years ago, and I really wasn't inspired to replace them. I also just discovered yesterday that the company I bought them from has gone out of business.

I will definitely check out G Gundam, especially since it looks like it's going to be one of the easiest to find out of all of these series.

It's one of the evil generals from Great Mazinger, the second show in the Mazinger series (after Mazinger Z). I should add that THESE are some of the villains from Mazinger Z:

The fight scene from episode 12 of Big O. Although it's among the cheesiest of anime, it's also freaking awesome. 8 minutes.

Wow, so it's Phoenix Wright: Ace Super Robot Pilot. I guess the "O" stands for "Objection!"?

Sousei No Aquarion:

-Stupid Plot

-Shallow Characters

-Robot Forms Like Voltron

-Said formation causes orgasm-like pleasure in the pilots

-Angels

-Demonish things

-An episode in which the characters are forced by their commander to cosplay as each other in order to help them understand each other.

In other words this is Super A+ grade cheese, and a decently good time.

Uchu no Stellvia might be a bit too new and isn't very super robot. And there was that Robot-Anime that had the Gundam SEED-chara-designer doing the charas, I forgot the name of the series, however ... featuring a mediocre plot, some predictable moments but some good action down the road, so nothing too special there.

You really have to watch the Gekiganger OVA, but in order to enjoy it, I think you need to watch Nadesico (the newer anime) as well.
The gekiganger-episodes are kind of ambiguous and depict basically what the current episode is all about and kind of shows how ridiculous these concepts are, "despite" including cliches like time travel and alien invaders. Really worth a look!

I was thinking more along this line:

I've seen some Megas, and although I agree it's a great show, it doesn't quite have that unintentionally-campy-70s-jive to it that I'm looking for here.

Mazinger Z was awesome, and was also the very first "super robot" anime (Gigantor came out before it, but lacked a "monster of the week" and most of the other staples of the "super robot" genre).

Amazingly, Wikipedia has pictures of ALL of the "mechanical beasts" (i.e. "monsters of the week") from Mazinger Z from all 92 episodes of the anime here.

Also, here is the intro to the show.

Gorgon's in both. He brings Dr. Hell Mikenese robots toward the end of Mazinger Z, then when Dr. Hell fucks up he invites the rest of the Mikenese to the party in Great Mazinger.

That upside-down-skull-head guy, General Ardias, is from Great Mazinger.

No. At least not Mazinger Z; it's totally devoid of any kind of creepy sexuality. Even Baron Ashura, the evil half-man-half-woman doesn't exude any sort of creepy sexuality.

It's mild... for the kids.

Go Nagai is the most ingenious manga artist ever. His works have so much more energy than anyone else's. Other trashy manga (Bleach, One Piece, Naruto, DBZ, etc.) are sterile and boring, while Go Nagai is infectiously energetic. You might not understand what is happening, but God dammit, you still care that the good guys stop it.

His sexuality isn't creepy because he's so up front about it. He doesn't do lolis.

I'm not sure how (I thought it was recommended here but I don't see any recommendations for it here now) but I found GaoGaiGar, and we're watching that now and it's totally awesome and full of super robot POWAH.

We will probably try G Gundam next. Or Great Mazinger if I can order it, although I can only find it un-subbed, which probably won't be a problem since the plots are so ridiculously simple.

The guy who fansubbed GaoGaiGar actually took over the IRC fansub group #anime-gundam from me, though it's now being released in the US .
