HL deathmatch was so much fun, with the laser-guided rockets. _________________

I always found this sort of peculiar and bothersome. Did they do this consciously, or was it a result of budget constraints, or...? Perhaps women were left entirely out of the Zone because, at least from the perspective of the men making the game (assuming there are no women at GSC Game World) and males playing the game, the presence of women would have been a familiar Other (though it may be gross to think of women as "the Other," I use this term in relation to this perspective) and this would have taken away from the lonely atmosphere -- prison-like (or church-like, militant) despite its open nature. Maybe it just follows Tarkovsky's Stalker, in which the men venture into the Zone while the Stalker's wife stays behind, angry and frustrated... because, I guess, the atmosphere of solitude is better for spiritual yearning...?
I guess a need for homosocial bonding is about as good a justification for it as any of these.
What does this smeggy person think of Portal? _________________

Marked One's a bit more complicated than that, since there's more to his past than the game initially lets on.
A lone wolf, though, yes. But what does this have to do with the absence of women? _________________

I don't think so. I just read something about a German multiplayer beta that was passed off as a demo or something, but it's not legit.
The game is fairly cheap, though, and you can probably get it for a few bucks if you keep an eye on Steam sales. _________________

To be fair I actually don't mind the accented English dialogue, but it creates some kind of weird dissonance and I would just prefer Russian as a matter of principal.
You know, sort of like how I wouldn't care to see an Akira remake with Japanese-American actors speaking English. _________________

I probably should have grabbed Crysis last time it was on sale. _________________

Yeah, I'm getting a real William Gibson vibe from E.Y.E, and it looks like a perfect middle ground between Deus Ex and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
Really looking forward to playing it. _________________

Well, if you're trying to be complete... Before Quake, and assuming we're just skipping past everything before 1993 (Wolfenstein 3D, Blake Stone, etc.), play—in roughly chronological order—In Extremis, System Shock, Rise of the Triad, Operation Body Count, Quarantine, Heretic, Descent, Star Wars: Dark Forces, Hexen, Strife, SkyNET, Powerslave, Marathon Infinity. Then play Quake, Blood, Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, Goldeneye, Hexen II, Jedi Knight, Quake II, Unreal, Half-Life, Thief, System Shock 2, Half-Life: Opposing Force, Wheel of Time, Quake III, Medal of Honor (PSX)—and then a break before the 2000+ games:
Thief 2, Daikatana (don't take my word on that one; I've just always been curious despite its bad reputation), Perfect Dark, Deus Ex, Alien Vendetta (Doom WAD), No One Lives Forever, Half-Life: Blue Shift, Serious Sam, Halo, Metroid Prime, Painkiller, Doom 3 (for... perspective), Half-Life 2, F.E.A.R., Half-Life 2: Episode One, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Bioshock(?), Portal, Team Fortress 2, Half-Life 2: Episode Two, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky, Left 4 Dead, Fallout 3 (if you like), Crysis(?), Mirror's Edge, Killing Floor, Left 4 Dead 2, Amnesia, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat, No Rest for the Living (Doom II WAD), Fallout: New Vegas, and... well, that's about all I can come up with. Crysis 2, maybe? Bulletstorm? E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy might belong on this list. I'll hopefully find out about that soon. I'm still curious about Singularity, Cryostasis, and probably some others.
Assuming you haven't already played any of these, of course (which I actually assume you have—I just felt like making a big list, I guess). Also, I'm obviously stretching this a bit by listing things like System Shock, Thief, Deus Ex, Portal, Mirror's Edge, Amnesia, the Fallout games, etc., but I suppose there's enough crossover to include them here. I wasn't about to go quite as far as including games like Ultima Underworld, The Elder Scrolls, Arx Fatalis, Dark Messiah, etc. just because they're first-person. That could be another post, in another thread...
Did I miss anything important?
This reminds me I really want to play System Shock 2 again. I can get it running in Windows 7, but it still crashes no matter what when I go to choose a career—which has something to do with the video codecs, I think, even though the intro video plays fine without crashing the game. Any help? _________________

I thought about including Redneck Rampage, but between Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, and Blood, I felt I had enough of the goofy games from that era included.
Still probably worth a mention, though!
Oh, Smithee: do give System Shock 2 a chance if you can get it running. It's a huge improvement, and nearly as good as Deus Ex—some might say even better. _________________

id is like a band whose lead guitarist and irreplaceable bassist left after their indie days and the first few (awesome) albums.
They keep releasing albums and they sound pretty polished now, but the spirit just ain't the same.
(I'm still hoping for the best, though.) _________________

Got a fix. After copying the SHOCK folder to a games directory or whatever, run SS2Tool and then extract these videos to your data\cutscenes folder: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=60LH0N53 - let it overwrite the old ones. They're reencoded for DivX, so that should enable the game to run in Windows 7 if you run it as admin. _________________

Mr. Mech: I still had it crash on me once when I chose my sensory deprivation training, but after reloading it went through fine. Not sure what that was about.
Maybe it'll still be a little finicky, but it should at least be playable now. Just save often. _________________

I like what one of the comments pointed out, actually—how it looks like the guy might be holding HUD device in his other hand, or something.
The Blade Runner-ish stuff with blimps displaying advertisements gives the game a neat look. This feels like something on par with Blake Stone amongst all the bigger FPS games... _________________
